You turds mostly cook or order out?
« on: November 05, 2019, 04:38:23 PM »
With DoorDash, Uber Eats, and others, it seems more people are ordering food than cooking.  It saves tons of time with cleanup and shopping.  Personally, I cook most of the time, but we're a dying breed due to the aforementioned services.

Pay more for possibly unhealthy food to be delivered to your door vs pay slightly more for food that you have to make yourself.

I cook, mostly. But I live in an area rural enough to preclude such services

i really enjoy cooking. it's very relaxing to me as a way to unplug from the day, plus it feels good to make something delicious or at least pretty good from nothing.

but if i'm high as shit best believe doordash is on tap

Funny thing, I'm cooking more due to expanded grocery delivery services like PeaPod.  If I wanna try a new recipe, I just put in an order for missing ingredients.

That cooking is more expensive is a myth that just won't die.
Like dawg, you can make some decent healthy stuff that's like less than 2 bucks per serving.

the grocery store by me just started doing delivery on groceries but it's so close (10min walk) that'd i'd feel like a real bum ordering delivery. of course i used to say that about doordash too and here we are :lol

There are also things like Blue Apron and Hello Fresh. Although those are pricier. Still cheaper than getting a full meal delivered, especially when you add tax and tip.

I do click list though, where you order your groceries online and pick them up Applebee’s Carside Togo style. It’s just so convenient compared to actually having to grab shit off shelves. I just have some min wage grocer kid load up my trunk every Sunday night on the way up the hill

I did pretty well on $100 of food stamps a month when I used to get them. Gotta wait for good sales to buy meat but otherwise it's not too bad.

example if it helps...made a chanko style stew a week or so ago that is really filling for basically nothing.

head of cabbage for like $1.50...use half of that
1lb pork on sale and/or pack of tofu for $3-5
bouillon cubes 99c
mushrooms $2
soy sauce $3
rice vinegar $3

so for like $13 that's a full pot of stew that can last a few days if you are eating solo plus you'll have soy sauce, vinegar, and half a head of cabbage that you can use to make an easy stir fry by adding a protein.

So then you're still paying more for "healthy food." :thinking

That's what I'm getting at: You have the option to pay slightly less for unhealthy food (take-out, processed foods) or pay "more" (in terms of pricing and having to shop/bargain hunt) for "healthy" food.

Obviously, the later is going to be better if you're actually a nutritionist and/or care about what you put into your body, but let's not say that cooking your own food is going to be head-and-shoulders better with how pricing/etc. fucks you over. Which is what I'm getting at.

But in on another note: https://www.fastcompany.com/90278384/why-dollar-stores-are-bad-business-for-the-neighborhoods-they-open-in

So maybe eating fast-food might be "healthy"-ier in the end. :thinking

When I was in college I used to eat pasta almost every day. I calculated that a serving of spaghetti with tomato sauce cost me roughly 90 cents. :success

i edited my post to add a cheap recipe that is pretty healthy and doesn't require meat, tofu is both good and good for you. but even without that just buying pasta + couple cans of tomato sauce and some garlic costs next to nothing (maybe $5-7?) and can last a week.

hell eggs are amazing and versatile and can be used instead of meat if you need them to be.

but all of these meals do take time so it's a pain in that way so...i don't actually know the point i'm trying to make lol. i guess i just see it as pretty cost effective to make food from nothing vs ordering from fast food just cause you do get more but the trade off is time spent cooking.

heck even cheaper/lazier, toss a beef/pork roast into a crockpot with some bbq sauce and optionally a chopped onion. that's a week's worth of lunches for $7

exactly. Timu's logic doesn't even make sense on its face: when you eat out, even if it's McDonald's, they have to make enough $ off each item to cover their operating costs, pay their employees, and then make a profit on it. Any way you slice it, buying and cooking your own food is way cheaper, especially if you buy shit in bulk and go to places like Costco.

Eat at home most of the time, unless I am eating with friends really (and the rare occasion I am super busy). But I barely save money on it tbh, as I am a wasteful bastard.

Grocery stores like Whole Foods are expensive (to me at least). Not sure if I would be better off money-wise buying the same food at Whole Foods instead of eating it at a restaurant/delivered meal. Probably still yes. But I don't go to Whole Foods almost ever and get my stuff from other grocery stores. Plus WTF I can't even buy Dorito's and Coca Cola at Whole Foods. What's up with that?

I bought some chicken breasts there like 7 months ago that were on sale. My roommate told me that if you buy their bacon at the cafeteria in the morning it's super cheap and already cooked. And he's obsessed with bacon and definitely not obsessed with his health.

I cook about 80-90% of the time due to catching a bad case of that beetus a couple years ago. Sometimes I feel lazy and want some of that Yum! brands goodness, and there's a combo KFC/Taco Bell right around the corner. (let's ignore that literally nothing on either menu is even just a little bit bad for me)

The ID of my new office PC is MAGA-2020  8)

As for pictures. One of my old co-workers whom I also studied with put up a picture of Kim Jun Il next to the clock back in the day.
It took about a year for a client to notice and ask someone to take it down.
:neogaf

There was also the occasional "you walked away from your PC. You have forfeit all your wallpaper and screensaver rights" moments back in those days.
A programmer who kept using "Adolf H." as his test account and of course placeholder pictures of Vladimir Putin.

Still the most infamous piece of 'art' was an actual painting of what was supposed to be an abstract clock that could also be interpreted as a gay orgy in a 'once you see it, you can't unsee it' sort of way.

Whole Foods isn't too bad if you do their store brands and buy cheaper cuts of meat.  I mostly go there for their cheese section. Their steak is great too. Same with their seafood. So fresh!

Truth.  Also the services like DoorDash suck.  I put in an order for my kid in the hospital and the driver texted me after 5 minutes saying he couldn't find the hospital and that he threw away the food.  WTF.  Their charges are ridiculous too unless you have a coupon, like $20 for 3 taco bell chalupas and a drink.

I mostly cook at home, I like to do it and it's cheaper than eating out all the time. People who complain about being broke but aren't making their own food are a major pet peeve of mine.  You can get by on about $20-30 worth of groceries a week, whereas that will just be your drink bill at many restaurants.

cooking at home, $40 for groceries per week (at the most extreme) per person. McDonalds meal is what, $5/6? x 3 meals a day = $15/18 × 7 = $105 to $126. We're not even talking about something nicer like Taco Bell.

How much more time do you think I have lived (relatively speaking) by spending my time more wisely compared to all of you? If you add up all the time I’ve saved by occasionally using my brain (try it!), I’ve probably packed 200 years of living into my 38. I’m a vampire compared to you fruit flies.
