I know the basics, but what articles of clothing are necessary when investing into a wardrobe for a short trip that you'll never use again? Aside from layering, what outer layers are necessary? Are windbreakers over your top layer necessary, or is it considered too much? Boots over sneakers or casual shoes a necessity in Chicago's streets?

Also how reliable is transit during potential snow during this weather (Late January Chicago)? Is it viable walking around the city to various locations?

Henly shirt, fleece pullovers and a Columbia/North Face jacket are a good combo.

Under Armor compression tights are good to wear under your jeans/slacks.

The thing to know about dealing with cold is that your body will focus on warming your core in response to the cold. So, your feet and hands will be the first thing to feel bitter cold. Once your feet get cold youre finished. It saps your will to want to do anything else but get warm.

So, socks and gloves are the two most critical pieces of clothing. If it gets below 0, you want to be wearing two pairs of socks instead of thick fluffy ones. You want gloves that have two layers of protection (inner shell, outer shell). Single layer gloves won't cut it if you spend longer than 30 minutes outside.

Also, my experience in Chicago is limited. But my memory is that all the things I wanted to do were located in a few places. So, I was able to get away just relying on cabs/ubers. It never felt unsafe.

wear a wife beater under your shirt. Tuck it into your pants. It makes a huge difference. Especially if it's a little or a lot windy.

I wore shorts here the other day lol

Are you planning on being outside a lot? I’d say to wear boots as snow can be a pain in the ass in certain shoes, regardless of whether it’s freshly laid or not. Thermal socks are a god send if you’re walking outside a lot.

Transit: virtually the same. We’ve gone through hundreds of winters in the cold, we know how to keep things moving. Buses, trains, etc. will function the same (though some stops have heat lamps).

Though to be fair the orange line crapped out or something in the morning on Monday. So sometimes things can go array. But yes you should be able to rely on the subway and buses.

Don't be a wimp.

It's about logistics, I've been around New York at cold temps around Thanksgiving, but it's different when you're planning to walk around a city for a few days and make the most out of your trip during the coldest time of year w/ potential snow. I live in a part of the US where it never snows and 95% of the year your choice of sleeves is purely an aesthetic decision, so I didn't know what's reasonable in terms of transit delays, how much to pack/wear, or how much money I would consider investing just in attire for the trip.

That said, thanks for the tips of advice everyone! Lots of online general advice definitely goes a bit overboard.

-10C isn't exactly "please just end me now" territory, but it's cold enough that you have to respect it.

a winter jacket and decent headgear that covers your ears will get you far. i wear sneakers year around except after heavy snowfall - it's good enough as long as your feet don't get wet. Personally, I can't be arsed doing the layered clothing and extra undergarments thing unless it's like -25C.

gloves are necessary if you're gonna carry shit around and you can't keep your fingers warm in your pockets :)

-10 can be pretty bad if you throw wind chill in, especially if you are coming from Florida.  Boots, gloves, and (especially) a hat will go a long way.  You can be like George in Seinfeld and be toasty warm if you have a decent enough hat.

I haven't been to Chicago in a while, but I wouldn't worry about public transport, and the touristy areas are safe for the most part.  Just use common sense and you should be ok, though I've heard there's gangs of Trumpers wandering around at 2 AM trying to throw bleach and nooses on people.

I don’t even think it’s been that terrible the last couple of years and I’m outside a lot.

The polar vortex was absolutely awful and happened late January.
