Anyone actually like Doom 3?
« on: December 09, 2019, 01:51:46 AM »
Got it from PSN since I figured for 10 bucks it couldn’t hurt to try it out, but so far it seems fairly crappy honestly.

Weapon feedback is dreadful. Level design is brain dead (please hit this arbitrary dead end, and backtrack to the beginning of the area for no discernible reason so a monster can burst through a random locked door so you can proceed). Enemy placement is trash. Their spawn locations and triggers are straight up designed to be annoying rather than scary. The mood is decently tense, but FEAR did it much better just a year later (in fact, it did everything so much better).

Even the graphics and tech don’t seem that impressive by 2004 standards honestly. On the PC Half-Life 2 and Far Cry were doing far more interesting stuff with their environments, AI, Physics, etc. So far, all I’m seeing is poorly lit, cramped, samey-looking metal corridors. Shit, even by console standards I think MGS3 and San Andreas we’re doing more interesting stuff technically that year.

I’m like 4 hours in, and I think I’m in Alpha Labs 3 or some shit (such varied levels, wow). Does it get more interesting? Do any of you degenerates actually like it? I knew this wouldn’t be anything like DOOM 2016, but I thought it would at least be a decent romp :-\

Don't play the BFG version if that's what's on PSN. the entire game is built around not having a a flashlight embedded on your weapon/chest/wherever.

I don't know. I played both Doom 3 and San Andreas around when they came out on PC and San Andreas looked and played like utter crap (while still being an awesome game though haha). Like there is something genuinely messed up about the non-smoothness of San Andreas mouse aiming.

Edit: I always found Dead Space 1 to be what I felt Doom 3 should have been if it were a third person shooter instead of a FPS.

I doubt the flashlight issue would change the game from being a slog to an amazing experience. I feel all my points still stand. Did you enjoy your time with the game?

Dead Space is a great comparison. Definitely Doom 3 done right. I have a couple of issues with it, but awesome game overall.

I was a coward and found Doom 3 too scary back then haha. Plus it didn't run on my computer as well as Half-Life 2 did at the time so I never finished it. Oddly enough Ravenholm didn't deter me from HL2, but then I guess that's only a small bit, whereas Doom 3 is constantly about jump scaring you or messing with you in the darkness. So yeah I haven't touched it since the mid 2000s. But I did look up some videos of the BFG edition and it kinda breaks the game in some ways as you can easily tell certain parts were intended to be played with the flashlight not being constantly on as part of the scenario.

I liked it although I'll put a nice big asterisk after that. the constant enemy spawning gets tiring and having almost every level be a lab was wtf. I still like the atmosphere and action tho, enough to make up for the shortcomings.

the bfg edition has a lot of minor changes that make it more actiony. player speed is increased, item pickups are increased, and way more lights are turned on everywhere, enough to change up the atmosphere. like the original was like walking around at midnight with the lights off.

i loved it, but it was the first time i built my own fairly decent PC instead of whatever piece of shite my dad had been conned into buying by the bloke at dixons.

I liked it when it came out, but I was doing a lot of hallucinogenics at the time.  I'm sure it has aged terribly.

You might want to skip ahead to the the expansion if possible. It gives some new weapons and monsters, plus a thing sorta like a gravity gun and some FEAR like powers, although still in the new engine and focused on lighting and more individual monster encounters it's a bit faster paced from the additions.

If I'm not mistaken it launched before a bunch of other new shooters at that time and followed a rather dated template.
Unreal Tournament 2004 came out that year as did Half Life 2, Far Cry on PC and on console Halo 2 and Metroid Prime 2.
2005 was another amazing year with the likes of Call of Duty 2, FEAR and Battlefield 2.

In the grand scheme of things DOOM 3 wasn't a bad game but it wasn't nearly as memorable as any of the other heavy hitters.

I liked it, but got a little tired of enemies spawning behind me.

Liked the art direction, too. It fit the level of fidelity very well. Nowhere did I get the impression that they reached beyond their grasp.

The Flashlight is the least of the games issues.

It's a tech demo, but Carmack didn't build a game around it. A lot of the monsters are literally in "closets" that'll open up once you pass a checkpoint so you get fireballs to the back from it.

I enjoyed it on X-box (Vicarious Visions did GODLIKE work porting that) along with Resurrection of Evil, but I don't think it's a classic on the level of the original Doom/2.

It managed to take everything that makes Doom games fun, exhilarating, and kickass and threw it out the window completely

i loved it despite it not being the game i initially wanted. the game plays brilliantly on the veteran difficulty setting, especially when they ramp up the enemy encounters after you found the soul cube, one of the more underrated weapons, or should i say mechanics, in a fps. that shotgun though  :-\

looking back, it was the perfect prototype for dead space, which is an even better game.
