Better hookah than hookers: Column

Quote
Given that I am not a teenager, I didn't know what to think when I read that more and more teenagers were using hookahs. At first I thought "hookah" was slang for "hooker," sort of like "gangsta" and "gangster," which was incorrect.

Actually, hookahs are tobacco pipes with water in them — inanimate objects, unlike women who charge money for sex. But like prostitutes, they are dirty, expensive and extremely popular among pubescent males who can afford them.

According to a study earlier this year in the journal Pediatrics, hookah use is "widespread" and "increasing dramatically" among adolescents. One out of five high-school seniors used a hookah last year — up 3.1 percentage points from 2012.

On the bright side, high schoolers are smoking cigarettes at the lowest rate in 22 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC Director Tom Frieden praised today's kids for "making better health choices," while acknowledging that "way too many young people still smoke." Indeed they do. According to the CDC, cigarettes kill more than 480,000 Americans a year.

But hookahs are not cigarettes. Even though a new study found that hookahs might be a gateway to cigarette smoking, the fact remains that, for many teenagers, hookahs provide an alternative to cigarettes. (Things that aren't cigarettes are by definition alternatives to cigarettes.) And having an alternative to something that kills hundreds of thousands of people every year is progress, isn't it?

Not according to people who hate tobacco and love children. As Frieden said: "Our youth are our future." Be that as it may, young people don't care nearly as much about their future, much less "ours," as they do about their present. That is why they continually flout the law and their health, often simultaneously, by guzzling tequila and having unprotected sex before they are 21 and happily married. Or by using hookahs.

The way to get young people to stop using hookahs, Frieden said, is "to invest in programs that help them make healthy choices," by reminding them that hookahs are harmful. But the problem with telling kids that hookahs are bad for their health is that most kids, especially the cool ones, don't care about their health.

The main reason young people use hookahs is to socialize. A single hookah-smoking session can last up to an hour, and hanging out with friends is one way to spend that hour. Using the same mouthpiece as members of the opposite sex is an added bonus, and hookahs, more so than cigarettes, provide it.

Anti-tobacco activists argue that the dangers of hookahs outweigh the "benefits." The bottom line, says the American Cancer Society, is that "all forms of tobacco are dangerous." This is true, just as all forms of candy, plastic and water are dangerous — all can kill you, somehow. The American Lung Association, no doubt for this reason, has called for "stringent policies to limit hookah smoking."

Hookers and hookahs: Bungling Iranian bombers pictured partying with prostitutes before botched Bangkok attack

Quote
The three bungling Iranian bombers detained in Bangkok after they accidentally set off their explosives cavorted with prostitutes at a beach resort days before the botched attacks.

A photograph has emerged of the trio cosying up to sex workers, surrounded by hookah-pipes and drinks, in a bar in the notoriously sleazy city of Pattaya.

The revelation comes as it emerged police are now hunting for two more suspects, including a possible bomb expert, they think helped the trio as they set about targeting Israeli diplomats.
