Seems pretty smart to me.  They're already following Nintendo with their own video announcements several times a year.  No need to waste money on booths and stage presentation shit at E3.

Nintendo still has a big E3 floor presence, they just don't do a conference. Seems like that's the way to go,

who is ted danson?

Meh.. it's their business but I don't like the idea of these shared marketing events drying up.   I love PAX every year, and it has been dwindling, and big companies pulling out can eventually kill or seriously diminish that entire enterprise.

There maybe is a balance where smaller companies can shine more without a Sony there, but I don't think that's really what will happen if this starts happening more.  They'll just die.. and we'll be left with only Sony/MS/Activision level events and some small indie conferences.

I thought E3 was more of a trade show specifically for the industry and less about consumers anyway- the way that it has become more of a spectacle over the past 15-ish years seems like it would be more of an annoyance for anyone there to conduct business.

This probably has a lot to do with the ESA fucking up and everybody who attended and presented having their private information leak.

But Sony has been on this weird marketing streak where they barely market being their extra bad nintendo direct ripoffs, so maybe it was planned from the start.

They complained about E3 being opened up to the public in 2017 or whatever it was;  I dunno.. I don't see why someone at the level of Sony would care about the ESA fuckup that much.  There weren't any big consequences to it.

If I were involved in the industry at all, I wouldn't want to have to walk among the shit tier of humanity that comprises the gaming community either.

Do companies ever release their E3 demos? Like if you have a playable demo at E3 why not just add it Live/ PSN/ Switch Online/ Steam and so on? Or maybe some companies do do that. I just never notice that being the case.

most e3 demos (if they aren't just pre-recorded video) are running on pc/dev console and it'd be more time and money than its worth to certify and release it just to get complaints back about how its broken or short or buggy or whatever.

Sony's 2015 conference  :lawd  If they can spit that hot fiya of that caliber going full solo, that's be great...  They just need to drop the coming to PS5 shit like Horizon 2 and Bloodborne 2, they got this.

Even the best Nintendo video moment can't compare to the best conference moments. The atmosphere isn't there in prerecorded.

Sony just confirmed. E3 is not lining up with their vision or something.
PS5/PS4 games will be at hundreds of consumer related events, whatever the hell that means.

Could PS5 slip into 2021?

sucks, I liked the tradition and to have something to look forward to where everyone shows off once a year.  :(  The amount of companies having conferences/videos was increasing a few years back, so I'm surprised it's dying all of a sudden.

Skipping the main year of your next console being revealed is kind of unprecedented. RIP E3.

If Sony really skips E3 and MS doesn't blow our fucking minds with never-seen before, exclusive Xbox 4 graphics titles then it will be MS who fucked up the most.

They will have exactly one shot @ Sony-less next-gen E3 this year.

MS is not fighting a console war at all anymore, my dude. They essentially ceded non-US territories to Sony and are trying to sell you on gamepass subscriptions above all else. I highly doubt they'll have mind blowing graphical showcases at E3 or anything like that. Think something like that Hellblade 2 reveal last month.

But a lot of people thought it looked pretty damn good?

Hellblade 2 was helluva lot more memorable and impressive than the first PS5 game unveiled.
OH!

This.  Who needs it?  Release some video packages, demos to download, and maybe a surprise game release or two.  Why do I need to wait for some dumb trade show once a year, with dumb presentations and speeches from people?  Just show the games.

I've gone to 1 of the last 3 E3s because I had to for work. Last year I skipped because I was exhausted and the thought of walking around and dealing with the general public made it even worse than normal.

E3 costs a ton and in the current digital age the ROI isn't worth it. Plus having your teams rush demos and get off schedule is tiring and destructive.

I feel like Sony skips E3 a lot? And just does their own show.

They dumped PSX for the same reasons. Too expensive, too little return on investment, too much impact to dev teams, the existence of better, more immediate methods of delivery of news/content.

E3 is a zombie at this point.

Actually zombie isn't even right, it's terminal. E3 is going to die, it is just a matter of when, not if.
