Actually, that they have ties to the neo-Nazi movement isn't in dispute, or at all a secret. A few years ago, Vice music editor Ben Shapiro wrote an article that revealed that Ace of Base founder Ulf Ekberg was once in a Nazi punk band called Commit Suiside.

https://www.cracked.com/blog/how-90s-pop-band-secretly-sold-nazism-to-america/

Has some interesting and somewhat compelling points (the title track's English lyrics being probably the best example) though much is written with such conjecture it's hard to take everything it presents seriously.

Was curious and ended up wasting some time poking around.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ulf Ekberg, said to be part of a neo-Nazi band in the 80s and was a late band change in Ace of Base who'd been together for years prior without him under different names according to Vice, claims in an interview from 2013 that only two of total tracks contained in the unearthed demos (published in a 1998 limited run) were by his band, while the others containing the neo-Nazi lyrics were neither written or performed by his band. Either way he comes across as apologetic in such interviews and there's a surfaced photo of what appears to be a young Ekberg still seen making the Hitler salute so seems he had some questionable history.

Clicked the Wikipedia article the piece sources for the Hebrew/Latin lyrics translation and it's no longer present. The wiki edits show that section was added just a few months prior to the article being published and later removed due to the cited link not actually including anything about the stated translation. Searched for the lines posted by Cracked.com verbatim and only a handful of results were returned, including the Cracked.com piece, pages quoting it subsequently and a couple SEO spam results. While trying to find more about this came across a Stormfront result mentioning translations where ironically posters weren't convinced of the alleged association and multiple, entirely different translations in Latin and Hebrew were posted sourced from Youtube comments and elsewhere.

On the track speculated by the piece to be about a woman wanting a baby entirely for welfare support reasons it seems a) the full lyrics don't suggest that and b) the 'baby' in the chorus seems to have been interpreted as a literal baby by only the author of the article (other songs of theirs use 'baby' non-literally as does the song they were inspired by for the sound of the track). The writer of the song has also stated it refers to a partner.

At the end makes the stretch that the album was renamed for the NA release to The Sign for rather nebulous presumptions related to Rupert Murdoch owning the label that published the album in Europe.
[close]

The Vice piece related to this OTOH only focuses on Ekberg, which at least could be more substantiated but it's still an interesting discussion.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Missed one of the best takes that could have tied it together, from a tongue-in-cheek response to the Cracked piece

Quote from: Stormfront
I guess "the sign" is a swastika.

tl;dr Ulf Ekberg was in a neo-Nazi band in the 80s [when he was a young teenager] and had Nazi leanings, though has since apologized and continues to do so [the first mention of has past actually dates back to 1993], but most of the stuff in the Cracked.com article is a big stretch.

tl;dr: Nazi's had some absolute bangers (Hugo Boss outfits, IBM/computers, Ace of Base/EDM music, Coca-Cola [cocaine in my soda]). Too bad they were losers.

Man that takes me back.  It's funny, over a decade later and the GFW radio podcast episode with crispin is still one of the funniest conversations I've ever listened to.  I always remembered thinking if crispin or seanbaby were on a podcast it was going to be a good listen.

Woah hold on there buddy. Roxette may have been known for making infectious pop hits in the 80s and early 90s but did you know that they performed concerts in Germany, a country known for harboring actual and literal Nazis? Did Roxette ever bother to ensure that no Nazis were allowed to buy their albums, go to their concerts, or listen to them on the radio? I thought so. This band is full of Nazi enablers. If you like or listen to their music, you are supporting the third reich.

I believe the blonde sister in Ace of Base developed extreme anxiety issues due to the sudden fame, and when they would perform in live shows she would sing from backstage or behind a curtain. Poor her.

That nazi article starts interesting with the guy’s background but quickly turns into total- doge

I kinda miss that early to mid nineties euro dance sound. It was so catchy. I kinda feel bad for today’s youth who is growing with k-pop and that super Awkward, forever trapped in 2002 american pop sound.

I realize the irony of being nostalgic of early nineties dance music while complaining about the backward style of kpop, yes

The early 90s were really where it all went wrong. In an alternate timeline, Jesus Jones and EMF were the next Nirvana, and in that universe’s 2020 there’s full-on worldwide communism, with gulags and death panels and shit. The dude from PM Dawn is in charge of school lunches.
