I’m going to kind of use this particular point as a jumping off point to express some of my views. It’s not directed at you in a personal manner at all, so I hope you don’t take it as such.

For me, I feel a lot of that anger guided towards situations like that comes not just from the ban itself, but from the ramifications and communal losses accrued through said bans. Even if it was totally justified to do so for a particular post, a lot of people within the communities tend to see how they will be affected in other areas as a result of actioning against a particular user faster than others who may not be involved.

The big one for me is, because it has been brought up and alluded to many times, Ket. I don’t know her well at all, though I will say she has seemed to be a good person every time I interacted with her. I wasn’t here for any of what went down, and I fully admit and understand that. And a lot of this for me isn’t even about her, herself. But as someone who has worked in hospitals and educational environments, who has seen how important mental health is, hearing of the situation worries me greatly. Not because she was banned or the reason why, that isn’t my business, but because she was a community leader for one of the most important social services you can provide on this site.

Mental health is vital to every community, especially to groups that tend to be more vulnerable. Developing a strong support system for users to reach out to, and a thread with help lines and information is a wonderful thing. I have read the OT and she did a phenomenal job with it and followed through on providing that support personally as well. I think that it is not out of the question to say a thread like that likely has saved lives or has absolute potential to have done so.

But say a user is banned, justifiably or not, for something completely unrelated to the other areas they post in. It is very easy for those ramifications to evade the eyes of anyone not looking for it. When someone in charge of something so crucial is taken away from the community, it also very negatively impacts that community. I feel as though a lot of the time users may see those impacts faster than the mods, which makes sense, mods can’t be everywhere. Users also may not always be able to put the feelings of loss they have in response to such events into words effectively, and that causes a lot of strife for all involved.

I noticed that when I read through the OT that it doesn’t seem apparent on the first page that anyone in particular was approached to take the reigns on it after the banning. In situations like that, do the teams meet to discuss how to ensure that support for such a thread is maintained? Were people talked to to communicate and make sure that in banning a user they weren’t taking a valuable resource away from a community that needs it? Because that is absolutely critical to me. It is so easy to let the wider ramifications fall through the cracks and not see the wider picture sometimes.

And that is why I, a bit strongly, said that the way things were handled seem to have been a failure. Because mental health is absolutely that important to me.
For me as a user, if I go to the first page of a thread for health, and I see the user responsible for it is banned, it lets some unsavory feelings of helplessness set in. That there must not be anywhere to turn to, if the person in charge of this is gone. Soon after followed by, ‘who even knows how out of date this is, why even bother’.

To me, having the first thing a user sees in the thread be that the person in charge of providing support and information that could help them is banned, especially if they are currently in a vulnerable state and needing support and help, is atrocious. It could lead people away from the resources they desperately need and make them feel more isolated. That is the biggest failure any of us can have in regards to that user in that moment. My words on that are sharp, because that is every ounce of severity and deference the situation deserves.

There are too many different groups on the site that have different ideas of what this site means to them that we A) cannot accommodate 100% of every single one of them and B) where we do not apply rules across the board. These discussions cannot be hostage situations - they have to be actual conversations.
