Is California worth moving to?
« on: February 06, 2020, 09:00:28 PM »
I know it's mega-expensive but I love the flavor of the state. Progressive politics and so on.  They recently banned private prisons, which is a great thing.  I want to support the Golden State.

I know I'll never own home unless I go to the Central Valley--which I hear sucks and is basically Trump world anyway.

Looking more in the LA area.

Where in California do you want to move to? Do you have a serious job offer in hand to consider? Rents in major metropolitan areas are nuts and won't be stable any time soon. I currently live in L.A., I don't know if this is the best time to move unless you have a solid place to start. If you consider L.A., you're probably looking at $2K+ for a studio in the better parts of L.A., and $1.5K in the San Fernando Valley and other outskirts of the city.

Does LA have a tech scene?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Beach

All of the FAANGM companies have some kind of office in West LA. You also have tons of military tech (Raytheon, Northrop Grumman), an explosion of various VR content creation companies, plenty of video game development, interactive marketing, and all kinds of other random startup shit. Plus research universities like Cal Tech, USC and UCLA, Aerospace like Boeing, NASA, JPL.

Venice used to be a bougie artist neighborhood, and now it is an expensive nouveau riche neighborhood for Snapchat millionaires and other startup tech.

The Mayor of Long Beach was also trying to find ways to get even more tech companies down there. I think it was unsuccessful but Play Del Rey/Vista were Wetlands 10 years ago and now they're home to all kinds of tech shit.

I even forgot Tesla an SpaceX because of my blind hatred for Elon Musk!

What do you plan on doing in California?  :thinking

Your anecdote supports the idea that domestic migration is in part driven by ideology.

When Grumman was relocating me, I was praying that I'd be going to San Diego instead of Melbourne FL. Unfortunately that wasn't the case... loved it in SD when I went for work (even got to chill with Bebpo!) and it seemed that Rancho Bernardo had a bunch of tech and defense companies.

For LA, my current company has a branch in Irvine and apparently according to people from that office, there's a sizable tech scene down there and in the OC.

Irvine is a boring place to live in. Great for family style life though. Lived in Irvine for 6 years or so for college/afterwards.

If you want to live in the OC and want a nightlife, Anaheim, fullerton, Orange are better for it.

The Mayor of Long Beach was also trying to find ways to get even more tech companies down there.

I hate this fucking garbage. Complete betrayal of the existing constituency. But who cares about your current constituents when you can get new ones? Culver City was working like mad to attract tech companies too, without the slightest regard for current residents. As a result, we get shit like this:

https://reason.com/2019/01/24/anatomy-of-an-affordable-housing-boondog/

If I had an Infinity Gauntlet I'd transplant the entire LA tech scene to Riverside.

Quote
A quick look at a zoning map of Culver City shows that most of its residential land is reserved for either single-family housing, or duplexes, a policy which is known to drive up the costs of housing. Even in those areas where "high-density" residential development is allowed, the city's height limit prohibits buildings taller than 56 feet (or four stories). Nearly half of all housing units in the city are single-family homes.

Quote
A predictable result of growing demand and stagnating supply is that rents and home prices have skyrocketed. The median home price in Culver City was $1.1 million in 2018, a 12.7 percent spike from the year before.

Sounds about right.

2200 for a 1br? Fuck, that’s cheap. I’m moving this weekend. I should have moved there years ago!

I actually live about 2 miles from Playa and have a spare bedroom! $1100 a month and you have to like dogs.

I interviewed with Daybreak studios which used to be SOE and they are in Rancho Bernardo and I decided I did not want to live in Rancho Bernardo. But there is tech in SD and SD is very nice!

Yeah I live adjacent to Culver City and have done so for 10 years now. The nearby tech boom has been great for me remaining employed, but it has been shit for cost of living and traffic in the area. There are plenty of areas better suited for this kind of boom, but they're not by the water so yeah.

What neighborhoods have the best mushrooms purchasable within walking distance?

I have never purchased shrooms but I would guess one of the more old hipster areas like Echo Park/Silver Lake/Eagle Rock might work. I could probably find some in Venice. I have friends who do/have done shrooms so I could ask around if you really want to know.

Is there any trick to learning the geography and layout of LA? It’s even intimidating to look around where I’ll work on a map.

santa monica, venice, playa, westside etc  - healthy living, shit nightlife, expensive beach housing, tech fuckery, shitty fake newfoundland fishing aesthetics
weho and beverly hills - gay and expensive
hollywood proper - sucks lmao
los feliz, silver lake, echo park - expensive hipster
downtown / little tokyo - finance bros, anime, hookers, homeless people, alcoholism
burbank - movie studios and old people
san fernando valley - porn, xanax, slightly cheaper living, suburbia, binge drinking, house parties
glendale - little armenia + suburbia
pasadena - combine the gentrification of the westside with the lifestyle of the valley
orange county - white + asian racism and suburbia
san gabriel - asian lyfe
everything else - i dont know

You forgot places like West Adams (one of the more rapidly gentrifying parts of town!) and K-Town (hipsters and Korean people), Mid City (hipsters and people who haven't been forced out by gentrification... yet), South Central (USC students and people who haven't been forced out by USC yet), Compton/Gardena/Inglewood (still primarily African American but with the football stadium probably about to get gentrified as well), El Segundo/Redondo Beach (people who can afford beach homes and people who have to commute south but don't want to move to Carson/Long Beach).

Beverly Hills also skews pretty Persian/Armenian as well.

To answer TVC's question though, personally think about stuff based on which freeway and/or major street you have to take to get to it:

West of the 405 north of the airport?  Generically the West Side until you hit the valley.
East of the 405 but still west of the 110 and north of the 10? Mid City for everything south of like Wilshire and then it changes, although there's probably 3+ different areas in the southern half of this area.
Did you go north on the 405 and over the hills? Congrats you're in the Valley!
Did you go north on the 110 and are past downtown? Congrats you're in the other Valley!
Did you go east of downtown and the arts district? What the hell are you thinking?
Are you south of the 10 and north of the 105? Again, why?
Are you south of the 105? Okay you better be going to Long Beach.
Are you south of Long Beach? Why?

This is sounding pretty decent so far. I still need to think but I have time to decide. I’d at least like to let my manager know if I’m leaning one way or the other reasonably soon.

I’m still just nervous about not knowing anyone down there :(

Yes, Sunset between Echo Park and Logan. There was a Pioneer Market right next to it, which was where we did all our shopping growing up.

I'm now living a 5 minute drive from the house I grew up in where my parents still live. It's kind of surreal. Neighborhood has changed tremendously. I can stand on Sunset for 10 minutes and see more white people than I'd have seen in a month in the 90s.

Huh, small world. I went to Logan elementary as a kid. Definitely know how you feel, whenever I drive though Echo Park, there's this feeling of contradiction of the memories of my childhood and what it is today.

This is looking more likely the more I think about it. I’m going to have a more thorough talk with my manager about it tomorrow, and if it still sounds good after that, I’m going to start the process with work. I still have time to back out before the transfer, so it’s not a hard yes in case something goes wrong or I change my mind. I have a project with someone in LA and I can fly down for a few days in March to check the place out and see if it feels right, then make a final decision.

Glenda, I may be PMing you for advice in the next few days. Although I have not made a final decision, I intrinsically trust you, and only you (and maybe bebps when he’s better), as a sincere source for accurate and honest information when making difficult life decisions.

Three things kind of pushed me over into the yes category...
1. I’m not changing jobs, so the “new job” stress of moving won’t be that prominent. Finding a new gig is like the number one thing that keeps me from moving, so not having that stress kind of makes this opportunity a freebie I shouldn’t ignore.
2. I’ll have to be back up here once a month. It seems like I rarely see any of my friends more than once a month (lol adulthood), so moving away isn’t that huge of a deal
3. I’ve wanted to move to a better apartment for a while. It looks almost definite that I could find a better place cheaper there.
