food you love that everyone seems to dislike

Black licorice/absinthe/ouzo - I like anise and fennel :yeshrug

Oat bran/old man fiber muffins and scones - love this shit, the nutty flavor from the grains and they give the best poops :noah

Tofu - extra firm, toss with garlic powder and salt and bake on a silpat :chefskiss fermented versions bomb too

Barley tea and tisanes - not as good as actual tea but I'll occasionally brew fresh herbs and drink them.

I like coffee substitute made out of barley. It is some post war poverty shit that is slowly disappearing from store shelves, but I absolutely love it.   :doge

Love me some kale as well. Kale has made a return as „superfood“, but I always loved it and people looked at me like I am an alien when I told them that I like it some years ago.

Is this Caro? I think you should definitely try the roasted barley tea I'm talking about from an Asian store. It's called boricha/mugicha.

Yeah, I didn't know Caro was a thing outside of central Europe.  :doge

Thanks though, will give it a try when I buy my gunpowder tea.

Kale was stigmatized as struggle/peasant food until recently.

People seem to dislike olives but I LOVE THEM ever since I was a kid. Olives were the best part of any salad.

That reminds me for the other thread...

The hate for Kale is mostly directed at the types of people who won't shut up about it (and their diets).

edit: After thinking about it, my answers would be Blue Cheese (the real stuff, not the shitty dressing) and Candy Corn.

Kale is badass. It has a great texture, it's super hearty and holds up and tastes fantastic. Throw them on a sheet pan and make chips, put them in a stew or use them instead of lettuce in a Caesar salad. They're really good in roasted vegetable grain bowls, too. My wife made a killer Persian beef stew the other weekend with kale, white beans, tomato, tons of herbs and chuck roast. Hnnnngggg.

We eat a lot of kale. I don't understand the hatred people have for it. It seems so fake and a pathetic attempt at getting attention, kinda like people and their use of "sports ball."

Not a fan of black licorice, but I like fennel root.

Probably the same people who won't shut up about how much they hate kale. Roasted extra firm tofu in a Thai rice noodle bowl is awesome.

eh i didn't eat meat at all until post high school but growing up in ohio that was pretty unheard of and surprised a lot of people. people just get used to a certain way of eating and if you didn't grow up with kale or tofu or whatever it'll be foreign to even consider adding to your diet.

also fried anything is good so of course fried tofu is good, but that's probably not the many people's first though of how to eat tofu if they've never had it.

We eat meatless probably three or four times a week, easy. Lots of beans, cheese, tofu and other protein sources. My wife makes really amazing food so I'm lucky, I guess.

Definitely in the "loves black licorice" camp;  even the heavily salted kind... have some salted black licorice chocolate from a local chocolatier that I need to stock up on as it's seasonal / one off.

And of course love fennel and similar flavors.

The amount of salted licorice shit I could send you, we even have salted licorice flavored condoms here  :doge

I've only had tofu a handful of times, I haven't been impressed but I don't think it was prepared all that well. Anyway it's never inspired me to try cooking with it myself.

Tell me what I need to do to make some good tofu and I'll try it some time  :-*

Guilty as charged, but personally I'm sick of people looking at me like I have a 3rd eye when I tell them I don't follow sports at all.

It's super versatile depending on what you're making. I like patting firm tofu dry, putting it in the freezer, defrosting and then marinading.

But the easiest way is to cube it, toss with garlic powder and salt, then roast it 350-400F @ 30-35 mins. Then cover with whatever sauce.

What does freezing and defrosting it do? But thanks, will try some time when I decide what to have it with  :obama

Huh. Sounds like it's getting a lot of the excess liquid out of the tofu. We've got a tofu press that we use before throwing it into the oven which does something similar.

tofu in some ways is easier than meat cause its pretty neutral so you can really make it taste like whatever you want.

That's the beauty of tofu. Paneer works similarly.

easiest way is just to marinate for a few hours or overnight. can be a simple marinade like sriracha and soy sauce or something a bit more like adding rice vinegar/brown sugar/OJ/whatever

to get the nice cripsy outside make sure you press or drain the water from the tofu (can even just pat with a paper towel in a pinch), chop it up, and toss it in a bag with some cornstarch before frying. make sure the oil in the pan is nice and hot, you want it to sizzle as soon as the tofu touches the pan.
