everything Park Chan-Wook is excellent. Your list is missing:

Thirst
JSA
Handmaiden

which are all excellent.

Japanese movies, basically the whole Beat/Kitano Takeshi series of films are darn good. Basically if you like Yakuza/RGG games watch the first two of these.

Hanabi/Fireworks
Sonatine
Kikujiro
Zatoichi

are a few of my faves.

Ryuhei Kitamura made some great ass film Versus early on. Azumi is pretty fun too.

Obviously Kurosawa stuff is great:

Yojimbo is so much Mifune fun
Seven Samurai is classic

Anno made some good non-anime films:

Shin-Godzilla
Shiki-Jutsu

Wong Kar-Wai's incredible. Just go watch everything he's done:

Chungking Express
In the Mood for Love
2046
The Grandmaster

Speaking of Tony Leung, Ang Lee did good with Lust, Caution

Will add more later.

Can't wait for what Suzu Hirose does as she is able to do more roles playing adults. In the meantime, the 3 movies I've seen with her and made me immediately hone in on her impeccable talent:

Our Little Sister - Absolutely fell in love with this film. Was my introduction to Suzu too. Should be noted that it's directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Highly respected Japanese director. He directed Shoplifters in recent years for example, but his notable movies also predate Our Little Sister. Oh yeah, Yoko effin Kanno provides the OST.

Rage - Another movie where I was utterly smitten by Suzu's performance. It's a tough one to watch (I won't spoil). Ryuichi Sakamoto provides the OST. That song in the trailer I provided makes me tear up every time.

The Third Murder - This movie I thought was just ok. Once again Suzu does a great job, but I found this film to be inessential. And it's another Hirokazu Kore-eda. I think you should turn to some of his other movies before giving this one a try.

Her next major movie where she is starring is Not Quite Dead Yet. Not sure what to make of it. It's supposed to be a comedy. Can Suzu pull that off? Is the script even good? Guess I'll see if it makes its way outside of Japan at some point.

Sword of Doom
Harakiri
Seven Samurai
Ikiru
Late Spring

An Autumn Afternoon
Tampopo
Love Exposure
Burning
Memories of Murder
The Host
Oldboy
Chungking Express

Green Snake
Dangerous Encounters of the First Kind
Kung Fu Hustle
Yi Yi
Syndromes and a Century

I watched Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives recently and never felt like I got it at all, although the pure craftsmanship made it enjoyable anyway. Syndromes and a Century (also directed by Weerasethakul) seemed to make sense somehow.

Love me some WKW.  Ashes of Time is one of my all time favorites.  Johnnie To's movies are also really good if you like artier stuff.  But I like even the Hong Kong movie "junk" from pre-2000 or so.  Wong Jing is another favorite of mine and I was really honored when a biography I wrote was used for a film festival in Europe, and Wong wrote me an email to say thanks and that he was surprised someone from the US liked his movies.

Castaway on the Moon

Oh yes. I love this movie.

Love Exposure

and this movie. Saw the same director's flick, "Tag". Didn't come close to Love Exposure, but still worth a watch. It's a good clusterfuck of a film.

Loving the lists in this thread in general. I don't really follow east asian cinema all that closely, so half of the titles I don't recognize. But even a good amount of the ones that are familiar, I have not seen.

I'm catching up on Korean cinema I missed/passed over the last decade or so and watched The Flu as it's pretty topical in today's mexican beer hell hole. The story follows a rescue worker and a doctor who meets earlier then who's lives become intertwined to the backdrop of a mutated flu virus from China.

It's pretty much what you would expect from a disaster movie, clueless government, rampant spread and a KCDC hamstrung by government at every turn to 'save face'. An entire city gets quarantined and things go from bad to worse as a cure isnt forthcoming, the place quicky devolves into a lawless death camp. At the heart of the story it's about a daughter and a mother and their relationship, with a love interest Rescue worker trying to bring them together.

Pretty neat, 6.5/10.

I closed as soon as Claire De Lune started playing.  >:(
Asian cinema/anime/games have developed a fucking fetish for that piece, at this point.

Speaking of Asian cinema, i got to watch Kaili Blues, and it was predictably very, very good.
The guy made it is also quite young to have this much style, fml.
Will get around to watch the "sequel" (Long day's journey into night).

I'll read it after I watch it so that I go in without an opinion. I've definitely been stoked about it for a year and have been patiently waiting for the US release... I even emailed the distributor asking if I could get an early copy :lol

Yeah i gotta get around to that too, has been in my watchlist for a while.
Black Coal Thin Ice was really great, so i have little fear it won't be.
I also need to recover Zhangke's latest 2 films.

I haven't really been in the mood for films, since the quarantine.  :thinking

I recommend Public Enemy. I think it’s Korean, not sure. Anyway it’s about a cop chasing a serial killer. He’s like Columbo with serious anger issues.

Mikami was ahead of his time, as usual.

Pretty sure The Evil Within 1 was the first thing to heavily start using it again in recent memory since it was the weird trip twin peaks save room music, then Godzilla and now it's in everything. Hell the trailer for Moon on Switch is set to Claire De Lune.

I don't mind though, great song, but yeah overused currently.

I'm not an expert on Asian cinema, but The Twilight Samurai has to be one of the best movies I've ever seen.
