The death of the headphone jack
« on: March 05, 2020, 10:18:55 AM »

Sadly, this beloved friend is going the way of the dodo. While looking at potential new phones, I just realized that even Samsung after years of making fun of Apple for removing this beloved jack has now also removed it from their new S20+ flagship phones.

I've been with Samsung since the Galaxy S2, and have had great experiences with their devices all around.

Sadly it may seem I'll have to look into another option, another device from perhaps a different brand. I still use the 3.5 mm jack everyday, and have no intention of switching to wireless earbuds that you have to recharge. Fuck all that.

it's hard to go back to wired headphones once you've acclimated to wireless. let it go~

most everything is bluetooth these days anyway. much better to get a cheapo adapter if needed than settle on some dad phone.

one of the great things about getting old and eventually dying is that all the things that change for the worse won't mean anything anymore because you're fucking dead.

I really can't go back.  I travel a lot for biz and wires are a pain.

okay so don't use wires. not sure why that requires removing the jack for people who use it.

Costs. Like every business. Plus the phone is "thinner"/"sexier"/"prettier" without it, so they don't put it in.

in addition to real estate/sizing concerns, I have also seen that the 3.5mm jacks were always a weak point for water resistance. newer phones are way more submersible so it may not be bullshit.

Do people seriously drop their phones in the water? I have never done so at least. I use it in the shower to listen to music, so it's like drip resistant.

My S9+ is already thin af as well.. doesnt need to be much thinner

You can already use wireless earbuds even if the 3.5mm jack still exists..

I really havent seen any positive points except that the makers want to sell wireless earbuds

leave it underwater for a minute. :bolo

*edit* for the record I am pro-jack and was not thrilled when apple removed. that was years ago and can count on one hand the amount of times it was genuinely missed.

The issues here are that wireless headphones need to be charged and that lithium ion batteries lose their capacity rather quickly, and aren't user replaceable.
Add to this that wireless audio is lower quality.

But seriously, I buy wireless earbuds for 10 dollars and they are just as good a the cheap-o wired ones I used to buy. No big deal.

Don’t particularly care for it but it pretty much factually does not take up that much space inside phones. Always thought that was bullshit.

i got some audio technica bt headphones before they started doing away with headphone jacks and i use the 3.5mm cable every time. bluetooth lowers the sound quality was too drastically still for the convenience to make up for it. maybe new stuff is better, but these were top of the line 3 years ago and they sound pretty cheap when using bluetooth (but great with a jack).

I have a Honor 9 Lite. Those idiots at Huawei made the jack entrance so shitty that the average 3.5 jack doesn't fit in properly. Lol idiots. Luckily my old ass Beats that came with two sets of wires included one where you can screw on the bigger jack that you would use when listening to a record player I presume and luckily the "screw on part" makes it so that it gives it enough room to fit into the phone so the plastic isn't keeping it from not entering fully.

I bought a random 3.5 wire that would be more ideal for carrying around in public since my OG wire died from abuse after like 6 years (instead of this bonus wire that I only use at home that features the potential to screw on the larger ending) and it didn't work on my phone. Thought the wire was broken so I plugged it in my Switch. It worked. Yep so you phone manufacturers that make the plastic bulge out too much on the phone casing making it a crapshoot if some 3.5 jacks will or won't work in the phone are dumb as rocks.

AKA fuck off Huawei. Never buying your phone again. And the Honor 9 Lite ain't that great anyway for a midrange phone from 2 years ago.

US peeps don't have to deal with these ex-Euro issues thanks to Lord Trump banning Huawei devices. Good ol Cheeto is looking out for his people. America First.

Traveling is the best time for over-ear, wtf. Drown everything out and put up a "don't bother me" sign.

I agree in theory, but in practice I don't tend to like a clunky set of over-ears in my bag when travelling.

The only over-ears I have left are some sol republic tracks that I honestly only use to mix.

Chi-fi (hi-fidelity earbuds made in China) is really popular now with musicheads, for 10-20 dollars you can get wired earbuds that are near identical to ~$100-$200 pairs.

They are high-end and have lots of tech that didn't even exist a decade ago, the bass on these things are insane while keeping good audio quality.

I would never replace them with costly chargeable wireless earbuds that only last 1.5 years and are worse quality. At most, I would look into a cheap pair of wireless ones for the gym, but it's not a necessity.

Thanks for even clueing me in to chi-fi. I kind of went down a rabbit hole, audiophile-quality monitors were never really in budget, but $20-50 is impulse territory. there is some neat stuff here, seems like a lot of what you can get cheapo now required amps etc not too long ago.

I still wouldn't want wires for most situations, but could definitely get use out of better quality buds at home/maybe office.

as long they keep producing chi-fi iems, i'll keep buying phones that have a jack

M50x’s are my current go-to for closed back headphones, and I usually gravitate towards the ad700’s for open-air.  Big fan of the quality-price ratio of Audio Technicas.

The ad700 is discontinued though, so I try to be careful when I use them, and am dreading the day they finally give out.

I held out with my iPhone 5s for the longest time because of the headphone jack but kind of finally gave in and accepted that a smartphone isn’t going to be my primary method of listening to music anyways.

It’s still frustrating though.

What I don't get is how the type C adapter I have for my phone drains the battery like a mutha fucker. Okay fine, you want to take away the head phone jack and make an adapter, do it. But give me either a splitter or a 2nd Type C port.

Annoys me;  and I've had wireless headphones for years.

I like my wireless headphones, but I hate how I'm dead in the water without them.

I used to keep pairs of cheap $6 headphones all over the place and could always find one if I left my bluetooth at home.

As for headphone jacks, yes wireless is awesome but I use earphones for help with sleeping and having them run out of charge at 3am in the morning is annoying. I've had more issues with USB to 3.5mm cables in the last two years than I've ever had in two decades owning a phone with a headphone jack.

How the fuck do you people use earbuds, JFC. Might as well go to the Grand Canyon wearing horse blinders.

Over-ear or nothing. Unless you're at the gym.

hmm, nvm. i think ive had a misconception here for years. i always thought as a loose rule of thumb that midrange earbuds were a better option than closed back headphones for sound quality. i love earbuds for their simplicity and concealment, but also fine with nice headphones.

i generally won't use them (headphones) as much for numerous reasons though (big one being they make ur hair kinda frizzy where the band sits  :-[ :-*).

It's trash. I'll be trying to get something with a headphone jack for my next phone.

Bluetooth over ear headphones seem generally weaker than wired unless you spend a large amount of money. There don't seem to be any lower-priced bluetooth headphones on par with the <$100 Audio Technica stuff.
Speaking of over ear headhones, I love my active noise cancelling Bose QC-25, they are fantastic on planes (engine noise be gone!). They are wired and are powered by a single AAA battery (which lasts for more than 30 hours, and you can simply replace it while traveling). The ear cushions can be replaced (which I have done once in the past 4 years).
Bose no longer makes QC-25, the new model QC-35 II (identical audio quality) has a built-in Li On battery (not user replaceable) that lasts for 20h (and like all Li On batteries degrades after a couple of hundred charges), and afaik you can't charge and use active noise cancellation at the same time. Unlike QC-25, the new model supports Bluetooth, but I'd much rather have the advantage of a replaceable battery. (You can actually buy BT dongles for QC-25 for about $10).

Strange times, when gadgets are getting worse instead of better.

HMD Global just announced the new Nokia 8.3 WITH a headphone jack!!!

Specs seen reasonable for an upper midrange Android phone. Interested in seeing the price. I got my 8.1 for a very steep discount (AU$500) and I'm pretty happy with it. I will definitely not be looking to buy this on launch day as I don't see the point in paying AU$1000+ for a phone. I'll most likely wait until it's sub-AU$600 again.
