suggestions on things to do/visit on euro trip
« on: March 05, 2020, 10:43:26 AM »
Trip will mostly be in UK and France but I'd also like to visit Germany and Spain.

Goals:

- go to an EPL match
- try British curry
- fuck a French broad
- go to Normandy
- drink french wine and cheese
- show Europeans the magic of baseball
- eat a German sausage  :-*
- go to Amsterdam and get high as fuck
- visit Auschwitz :fbm

Don't want to do much tourist stuff. I want to get right into the action.

I want to do one of those trips where you go from country to country I think.

Yeah, interrail is awesome. You can easily do London-Paris-Bruxelles-Amsterdam-Cologne-Munich-Vienna within 10 days or two weeks.

I personally loved the touristy stuff, art museums :idont

Oh I'll be going to museums. I mostly meant stuff like Eiffel tower

I would not plan to visit Auschwitz though, unless you plan to visit Krakow(which is worth it, but with the latest anti LGBT campaigns in Poland, I probably would not do it)

The Museum at Dachau is at least as good if not better than Auschwitz and it is really close to Munich.

Auschwitz is really last on the list because it's so out of the way. Thanks for the replacement suggestion

You have to go to Vienna btw, everything else should be optional. IMO by far the most beautiful place in Europe and incredibly affordable compared to Amsterdam, London and Paris.

Why of everything would you go to a premier league match. The most boring ass fan scene in Europe, even Italy and their half (or now Corona empty) stands is more exciting.

lol cindi isn’t going to move there, it’s a great place to visit for a couple of days and to enjoy the beauty of Habsburg opulence.

Expected Raist answer: No no no, you should go to this suburb of Clermont-Ferrand, they serve the best horse in frog sauce there!

I'd like to experience La Liga as well I have to admit. I'd like to see a Barca game and see Messi play but I also like EPL. Deal with it?

I beg to differ. I was in Vienna for 4 days and it's quiet and boring as fuck. Unless you're super into looking at pretty buildings, I suppose.

Night life is non-existent, the place looked deserted - I was told you need to "know where to look", which is like, great, exactly what I expect from a capital.
It seems like 70% of the city's activity is to meet up with your retired neighbours for coffee and cake at 5pm and then everyone's gone to bed by 7.

German cities are FAR better. Just go to Munich if you want the Austrian feel. They're kinda related. But at least it doesn't look like a ghost city after sunset.

As for France, feel free to go to Clermont-Ferrand but don't blame me for it :lol

I'd personally suggest Toulouse, Bordeaux, Montpellier if you want to stay south. Marseille is  :yuck and Nice is meh.

North, Lille is great, and at the crossroads of UK, Belgium / NL and Paris. You can get to any of those places super easily with the Eurostar :rejoice London is 1.5h, Paris 1h, Amsterdam is something like 2h away, I think.

I‘d really like to recommend some Polish cities to you, Krakow, Wroclaw(Breslau) and Gdansk(Danzig) - my hometown  8) - are all beautiful places, but I don’t think you’ll have a good time there as a black American transwoman which is a shame since a lot of Polish people are the most hospitable, friendly people you’ll ever meet.   :-\

Come and see De Nachtwacht and of course the Van Gogh Museum. Also enjoy a nice canal tour.
If you're into the WW2 holocaust things you can also visit Anne Frank's house.

Other than that there's plenty of vibrant and fun cities to visit other than Amsterdam like Maastricht, Delft, Leiden, Utrecht and the center of The Hague.
and the best part is that pretty much everyone speaks at least a bit of English and every city is well connected with public transport.

Other than The Netherlands I also found Berlin very fun when I visited.
There's history like Checkpoint Charlie and the remnants of the wall but also a ton of nightclubs and nice scenery.
London also comes highly recommended.

UK is extremely easy. Not the fastest trains or anything, but it's easy and not that expensive if you dont travel rush hours. I loved Brighton the two times i've been there, and for whatever reason, expected the same kind of vibe in Bristol. Little advice, dont go to Bristol. What a fucking shit hole.

Well the train strikes can be a fucking pain in the ass, and happens way too often. But yeah, the service itself is fine.

Not worth it imo. I suppose your resources  are limited. even if Irish people will murder me for this: the vibe there is not that different from the UK.

IIRC Manchester has a huge LGBT community (it has been 15 years since I been there though) and is a vibrant northern city, but that‘s pretty much it.

The Netherlands is my favorite (de Pijp is a cool neighborhood in Amsterdam, get the fuck out of Centraal), but seriously just go to Spain if you've never been.

And drinking OG lambic and saison in Belgium with some awesome cheese. Fuuuuck.

To expand on this placebo effect: It’s crazy how much the setting and mood influence our perception of taste. I had the best coffee of my life in a small bar in Sardegna(Italy). On the day I was leaving I asked which kind of coffee and which coffee maker they were using. Back at home I looked for Italian cafes and found the exact same coffee prepared with the exact same coffee maker. It tasted like incredibly average coffee.  :stahp

I went to Ireland in September '18, it's a very pretty country. Just don't go there solely for like, the Guinness factory. The factory is a cool place to check out and you can have the freshest pint of your life there but there's way more to see of the land then that. Also if you like your deserts there's choclatiers and patisseries all over the damn place, Ireland is secretly chocolaty.

If you've been anywhere else in Western Europe especially France and Germany, THEN the UK, you'll think "what in the actual fuck are those trains".

Not to mention the fares.
