Is there a boxset for the Stanley Kubrick collection?
« on: January 31, 2007, 11:48:52 PM »
I'm looking for a boxset but to no avail, I have found nothing. Do these dvds simply just have "STANLEY KUBRICK COLLECTION" to taunt me?

Is this shit out of print?

I know, but I can't find it in stores and shit. Is it out of print? Because it seems more expensive than other boxsets, like say, Hitchcock's. I mean, if this was released in 2000 or 2001, why the hell does it still cost this much?

look you bitch

That's VHS.

To answer the OP's question, yes, there was one, but I think as a set it is out of print.  The individual cardboard-cased movies were in it.  The set was very expensive, and the movies generally don't have good features, so it really wasn't worth the high price tag.  I'm hoping someone does these DVDs right some day.

And why is that?

Because his movies are incredibly boring and outside of Dr stranglove they suck.

Okay, because I loved Full Metal Jacket, I'm going to ask you to silently kill yourself. If his other films are at that quality, or even above it, I think this set would be quite a nice gift.

You loved one movie by a director and want to get a box set? Ok. Watch Dr. Stranglove and you'll be fine.

Most of his movies are better than that.  FoC is a film student, ie. he likes Hollywood crap.  Ignore his opinions when it comes to people that work outside the system.

Well, considering the fact that the said director is universally praised, and that people consider FMJ one of his weakest efforts, I would think that a purchase of the boxset would be quite up my alley; I thought FMJ was brilliant.

So TVC, would you say that it's just better to get the movies individually? I'd figure that's the case. It definitely seems cheaper, but I'm a box set whore. I HAVE to have the box! What about that documentary dvd that comes in there?

And yeah, the extras for FMJ sucked.  :-\

I never owned the set.  I just own some of the individual titles.  They used to be like 40 a pop individually, with little extra content, so I've only started picking them up recently because I've been seeing them cheaper.

40 dollars a pop? What a rip. I'll get them individually then. I got FMJ for um...I think 11 bucks, or maybe 9. What Kubrick film should I see next, though? I'm torn between 2001 and Clockwork.

Barry Lyndon is about this 18th century dude that wanders around 18th century Europe trying to make a name for himself.

Spartacus. . . I dunno.  Maybe some studio owns the rights to it? Same with Paths of Glory.  Since that was his first, and he was probably after whatever funding he could get, he probably sold away the rights to someone that doesn't want to let go.

Clockwork Orange sucked.  The story (which I already didn't like) was based on the American version of the book where an editor took out the 21st chapter where the whole story was supposed to come together and the writer says that's extremely important.

Depends what kind of movie you want to see.  Both the movies you named are great, but I'd recommend watching The Shining before you get into his hardline masterpieces.  After watching everything else, The Shining loses a bit of its luster, but on its own, it's an excellent suspense flick.

that makes me sad, I mean throw in eyes wide shut and you would have completed the collection - which might have made it worth that amount of money.

Its like leaving enter the dragon out of the bruce lee collection - just one more movie and it would have been complete  >:(

Himu: get 2001, stat! Just like TGTBATU is my favorite film, and Vertigo is a close second, well, you guess it, 2001 is a close third. Those 3 are pretty much interchangeable for me.

Himuro, all of the titles in the set have been released individually, are relatively cheap and there's a newer version of Dr. Strangelove with a pretty good chunk of extra stuff on it floating around. It's also missing a few of his important movies like The Killing, Spartacus, and Paths of Glory. Depending on the price of the box, I think you'd be better off just getting them individually.
