Getting old eyes
« on: April 30, 2020, 01:54:07 PM »
So I've been lucky and had 20/20 vision my life while the rest of my family all wears glasses. I've never read about presbyopia or even heard of it.

I was noticing reading lately that I have to hold the book out about 5 inches (same with VR headsets) or else the text blurs, so I looked it up and apparently after about 40 pretty much everyone needs reading glasses and this is a thing? I'm turning 39 in October, so the timing is about right then.

I also read that if you get headaches it can be from looking at blurry text and I gotta say I've been having a decent amount of headaches lately from working at home staring at the computer screen all day. Hmmmm....

Since now isn't a good time to go see eye doctors, maybe just try to use one of those print tests to determine what kind of reading glasses I need and order a pair online.

But yeah, as someone with 20/20 vision, I didn't realize this was a thing where at some point your eyes just say "later, I'm out" and you need reading glasses. I'd been off books for about 6 months, so only started noticing it in the last week or two when I started a new book.

 :whatisthis

yep it fucking sucks. I am not at point where I need readers or anything yet, but it was diablo on switch of all things that clued me in on this. I didn't even think of the implications on VR.  :-\

Just depends on your eyes. I still see fine close up, but things at a distance are starting to get fuzzy. Especially noticeable when night driving and trying to read road signs that are just in view.

Yeah, I printed some tests and they're weird because they're like hold this out 12-14 inches and read the lines.
...well if it's 12 inches out then I can see perfect! lol the whole point of reading glasses is closer than 12 inches!

But they seem to say if you can see perfect on the smallest line that far out you just should get the lowest power (1.00) reading glasses. So will pick up a $20 pair online and see if they help.

I have been far sighted my entire life, but I coped with it just fine without glasses my entire life.

Finally caved a year or so ago, when I couldn’t read stuff on my phone anymore. :stahp

In optical terms reading is considered anything within 40cm or about 16 inches because that’s when the eye begins to accommodate.  As we age we lose the ability to accommodate as the muscles weaken and the lens hardens.  If it makes you feel any better it’s been happening since you were like 10, you’re just noticing it now.
