Officially I had to guess Netscape 1997

But I'm using Chrome and that seems to work well enough.

Firefox is my main. Chrome I use strictly for Netflix and Gmail/Hangouts (in firefox I'm signed in to a different Google account which is my email from another place which is attached to my youtube account from  long time ago). I also have Opera as a third for no particular reason. If some site seems to be off on Firefox I'll use Opera or Chrome.

----
On android I also use Firefox as my main thanks to add-ons. uBlock Origin is a must and Chrome is dumb on android for not allowing extensions.
You must add "Chrome UA on Google for Firefox Android" to get a proper non-gimped Google.com experience on the firefox mobile browser. Otherwise Google themselves purposefully gimps it. You'll see. It works, but it's kinda shoddy without it.

firefox and edge are faster than chrome on pc, at least for me. i do have chrome installed for chromecasting and remote desktop but i don't use it other than that.

and like you said, 3rd party browsers are a pain on ios so i don't bother

I always wonder why anyone doesn't just use Chrome.. because everyone who doesn't says stuff like "Well I have Chrome in case a web site doesn't work" and it brings me right back to the pain in the ass 00's when everyone was transitioning away from IE driven sites.

But I guess if FF is better on Android that makes some sense.   On iOS browsers are all kind of BS so I just use Safari.

I'd say that happens like once in a blue moon really. Often times if something seems busted on Firefox it's also busted elsewhere as it's a webpage issue rather than browser issue. But yeah, just in case you might as well have a back up browser.

But I think even if I was Chrome first I'd still have another browser just because my youtube account is a different email than my normal gmail one. And I'm not interested in switching between the two. Rather be always signed in. In this case I need two browsers anyway.

only way to live these days is ff and then chrome/chromium for when you absolutely need it :(

That's basically what I was doing until I started getting that startup error which seemed tied to FF. Guess I'll be more persistent this time.

I am aware of https://vivaldi.com/ but haven't tried. I do keep BRAVE installed for fucking with Tor easy. Used to fuck around with waterfox as well: https://www.waterfox.net/

I got some weird issue with FF a few weeks back where it would give me some strange message about not finding the user. I tried to reinstall and everything and nothing worked. So I went. "Fuck it. Time to restore this laptop to factory settings"

The other weird thing. I could not get NFL or NHL official websites to play videos for like the last year before I did the full system restore. Didn't matter what browser. I was confused. Of course after I factory restored they now work on any browser. So who knows what that was all about. Maybe some weird driver update or something. Eh, it was good to factory reset anyway after like 3 years.

Huh;  I just click my other login in the menu and have 2 gmail tabs open if I need it.

 :thinking :leon
Let me see if that is satisfactory to me. Be back in a jiffy...

edit:
Ya you're right. I can be signed in to both without having to reenter my password. Hmm. I suppose the only thing about having one account be default in one browser and the other in the other browser is that I'll never get confused for a second and be like "where are my subscriptions on youtube? Oh, I need to switch into the other account." It's a borderline BS nitpick on my part I fully admit. I guess I'll stick my old habit though It's good to know what you mentioned, Riotous.

Because Google pretty much forces that. Youtube is a notorious example of them "optimizing" it to where Firefox takes longer to load.

as long as it's not internet explorer it honestly doesn't matter

Basically.

I used Firefox for a while before Chrome, but I haven't switched back despite "Optiflex" or whatever they called their faster browsing. I'm fine with Google, bar the phoning home. Plus it's the default on Android, so it's pretty hard to care to use an alternate on PC/mobile.

Only chrome. I work in online advertising and Google ads and analytics work best by far in chrome. I prefer it UX wise as well.  Also chrome let's you connect different Google accounts to chrome directly so there is no need for signing in and out of accounts.

I haven't even looked at internet explorer in like two decades now that I think about it. The only time I even thought of it through that was when my tech illiterate uncle showed up to our place freaking out because he thought he deleted the internet, which was just the internet explorer shortcut.

IIRC Windows Server still forces it on you, at least on a fresh install.

Only for 2012, I think? Isn't there an newer version of Windows server, where it has Edge? I think 2016?

iirc the new edge beta can be installed on 2016, but not the old/current edge. we haven't bothered cause there's really no need.

we still use IE for some work stuff, edge still doesn't work with sharepoint correctly. :lol edge is our current default but we use gpo to force IE for some specific sites, mainly state gov sites that are old and busted. i also forced IE for an older ILO but I don't remember why now

Because Google pretty much forces that. Youtube is a notorious example of them "optimizing" it to where Firefox takes longer to load.

Like most things, it's a bit more nuanced than that.

Google tried getting people excited about Web Components and started shipping a draft spec in Chrome.

Other browser makers didn't like that version of Web Components, but based on the data and feedback that was able to be gathered by shipping the early version in Chrome, they were able to work together to make a far better version of Web Components.

Unfortunately, YouTube did a big site redesign in the middle of this and ended up using the Chrome-only early version, expecting other browsers would follow suit and until then a polyfill would be good enough. (Polyfills are never really good enough, ftr.)

Since then, the library that the YouTube redesign used (Polymer) got updated to use the new Web Components spec everyone likes (and which Firefox implemented), so everyone is currently happy. I think?

Web standardization is a fairly messy process. I think it was after this Google stopped shipping draft specs to end-users and instead started requiring web developers register with Google for origin trials (you need a special token now to use experimental features.) So this situation won't ever repeat (in this way.)

Additionally, everyone has finally (thankfully) woken up to the fact that user agent strings are busted as fuck (and also a privacy leaking nightmare), and are planning on throwing that trash in the bin. :rejoice Instead of rejecting entire browsers wholesale, the idea is web apps will be required to use feature detection (a best practice anyways.)

On Android, you can't even put adblock on Chrome. And since I'd rather just use the same browser for every device to save login info and share tabs, I moved everything to FF. Took a day or two to get used to the layout on Android but for my usage, there were no website issues. It's pretty funny how much faster webpage navigation on a mobile device is when you turn off ads.

You still have to use Chrome for any web development because they're the King Fatass of the market but I don't really see why FF would be a big adjustment for a normal user.

I hate Chrome on android because you can't hide the articles on the new tab page in flags anymore.

It seems like they deliberately turned off that feature because people were using it. Insanity

Edit: I still use Chrome though.

Unless you are deriving some sort of perverse pleasure from Google tracking and cataloging everything you do online (or are part of the problem), there is no reason not to use Firefox. It works extremely well on Android, too. Excellent add ons to prevent tracking, canvas fingerprinting and ads. Privacy is a basic human right.

My heartfelt gratitude to Chrome users for financing the web for me.

Could look at Vivaldi if one is concerned about Google. Runs on the same engine but offers nice pre-shit Opera features like tab stacking, optional single key shortcuts (eg: navigate prev/next tabs using 1/2 keys), split tab views (view two or more tabs beside each other in the same window), custom color schemes, among other in-built features.

In v3.0 they apparently added an inbuilt adblocker that one can hook up with ad blocking lists. Haven't tried it yet since I already use uBlock Origin.

Similar to D3RANG3D I loved FF until they dropped their legacy extension support. Didn't support MHT webpage saving last I checked which is a key feature I used. Still use it for testing stuff on a fresh profile though, along with a certain site that ironically only works with FF.

Mozilla should never have dumped Boot2Gecko/Fennec/FirefoxOS.

It was kinda spun off into its own company and they rebranded it to KaiOS... and now KaiOS is huge in developing markets and Google is the primary investor in the company. :lol

https://techcrunch.com/2018/06/27/google-kaios/

Time is a flat circle. Mozilla missed huge here, they basically gifted Google another operating system. :lol

Cool stuff coming to Chrome soon that Firefox has probably had for a little bit:

- New setting to block all third-party cookies (blocked in Incognito by default) :clap
- DNS-over-HTTPS :clap
- Google apparently loves building "Safety Check" features into things (Play Store apps, Google Account security, now this)

You can.

You can also install Linux browsers.

However the entire shell of the operating system is pretty much Chrome... it definitely feels weird using a non-native browser on the system.
