I probably average about 300-400 a day. It"s pretty great. Being lightheaded all the time is almost like being perpetually high, only it doesn't cost you anything.

This and salt. Plus large portions.

A goddamn can of Coca-cola is 200 calories. A lot of American food is Calorie dense. Then you throw in fast-food that is 1,800calories (just for a burger no fries/combo, for instance) and it becomes really high in calories really fast.

A can of coke is only 161 calories.

140 calories, actually. I just checked for a 12oz/355ml. Point remains though: A lot of American food/drinks are high in calories.

Then you throw in that fast-food places don't have their calories counts on the menu (because of eye-strain/ease of use) and don't really keep their calorie counts somewhere easy to see [if a national chain] or simply don't have one [local/smaller places]) and it's REALLY hard to count-calories. Even with a FitBit [for instance] you have to scan the product, which you can't really do with Fast Food places but can with products you cook at home. But if you combine spaghetti, sauce, etc. you have to scan the products individually and even then you can't really "eyeball" a serving size that would fit the FitBit/etc. apps that try to count.

It's very easy to get fat if you completely stop caring, back in Feb 2019 I ballooned to 190 pounds (6 foot tall) and so I started tracking EVERY SINGLE FOOD that I eat. This monumental task was actually pretty trivial and I have no idea why people make such a big deal about it but it took me like 2 months to get back down to 165 with like a 1500 calorie diet (~500 calorie deficit). Since stopping the deficit, I've leveled out at 170 pounds and just eat between 1900-2100 calories a day.

However, this makes it very difficult for me to eat with normals. Particularly at work lunches when everyone thinks I'm shaming them by feeling full off half an appetizer. I didn't believe it until a couple years ago when I converted completely to office work but the average person actually seems to eat a full-sized breakfast, lunch, and dinner every single day and yet they spend 90% of their life feeling hungry. It's like they took factory farm science and applied it to humans.

pretty sure fats are associated with satiety and high carb/simple sugar consumption does not
therefore if you stuff things with loads of added sugar you can get people to stuff their mugs more

1800 calorie for one burger?!
The restaurant, real filling burgers I recall the calorie count of tending to be 1000 at the highest

I'm exaggerating a little. But it's a HUGE problem in fast-food. Just look at my Taco Bell count, that's from Googling "Taco Bell menu calories."

Wendy's (for a burger) under "Wendy's Calorie Count" gives me:

Calories 1,090 - Dave's Triple (3 patties)
Calories 810 - Dave's Double (2 patties)
Calories 570 - Dave's Single (1 patty, more reasonable option)

NOTE again: This doesn't include the toppings or condiments. It's just the "reported" (to the... FDA? Forgetting the agency) count for the burger [patty?] by itself.

That's not to throw in:

Sodium 1,110 mg - Dave's Single (46% of the recommended daily value!)
Sodium 1,280 mg - Dave's Double (58% of the recommended daily value!!!)
Sodium 1,650 mg - Dave's Triple (68% of the recommended daily value!!!!!!!!!!)

This is without combo'ing it (fries, drink) note that. That doesn't even include the "sizing" of the combo (small, medium, large) which is basically "how many fries do you want to stuff in your face, senpai?" "Just fuck my shit up" level of overload.

I just tried to find the "4 for $4" deal that they do which is decent in a "small combo" way. Apparently Google (and Wendy's) doesn't list it, but a website (HUGE GRAIN OF SALT) does:

Here's the "4 for $4 Meal" blueprint: a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, a four-pack of Chicken Nuggets, a small fries and small drink.
Total calories: 1,130 (with a Coke) <---The fountain drink is included with the combo.

Much lower, but that is nearly a "small" combo for the Dave's Single miniturized.

(Sidenote: Calories 380 - Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, Calories 170 - 4xChicken Nuggets, Calories 320 - Small fries = 870 calories, so roughly in the ballpark of this quick Google'd site's calculation for the 4 for $4)

That's because of the salt, sugar, and fat. There's a book about this: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15797397-salt-sugar-fat <---I haven't read it myself but it's a noted issue with American food where proccessed (not just fast-food, think TV dinners of the 1950's) are hugely dumping salt, sugar [and fat] into the product to where they're very unhealthy.

Even if you try to avoid it, a lot of rural places only have a Dollar General [dollar store chain essentially] to where it's noted that these places are VERY FUCKING UNHEALTHY with their offerings. A lot of "ready to heat/serve" food that Americans buy because of 1) laziness and 2) cheap-to-eat like fast-food.

Google link to quarter pounder calories

apparently the quarter pounder is 417 calories. I sometimes do the 2 for the price of 1 deal on the app (or sometimes it's like 25 for the second or 1 cent for the second). So if I add morning breakfast which is usually a bowl of cereal with a bit of cut up fruit and milk, then say half a pound of meat for dinner I'm probably still under the 2500 calories they recommend for men. Eh sure add a few more calories if I add some sugar to tea or have a pop. That's still not really adding much. Or some extra snack during the day.

I guess unsurprisingly that's why I'm lanky when on top of that I mainly jog for exercise and only do push ups for strength. We'll see how my metabolism slows, but given that one side of my family has my kind of build, I'd say it's going to be very hard for me to become chonky.

edit: eh, rereading this who am I kidding. This is such a blatant  :ego that I'm ashamed. I'll eat my embarrassment away.

Internalized homophobia.  They are trying to eat the gay away.  It's easier to not think about a long hotdog in your mouth when you already got a three patty burger in there.

Also, I have been stuffing myself with coconut mango fried chicken all week cause it's on sale.

Just as an example, from Bore favorite Taco Bell™:

Calories 870 - XXL Grilled Stuft Burrito, no combo, no drinks. Just from it alone. (Note: Google doesn't list ingredients or extras in it), you throw in a combo which includes a drink... doesn't include the fountain drink but let's go with...

And that's 1,100 calories just from two items.
Man, and here I thought the XXL grilled Stuft burrito would be a diet item.
Ok, just for you REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEtious:

Calories 400 - Burrito Supreme (not cutting out tomatoes, not counting sauce, etc)
Calories 180 - Mtn Dew Baja Blast Freeze (16oz)

Calories: 580. That's two items a little over halfway to 1 of the main food-items/XXL.

Point is: Fast food is super unhealthy.

It's very easy to get fat if you completely stop caring

Or quite difficult, depending on your genetics. I remember watching a show about it years ago. A group of people agreed to eat a set amount of calories (over recommended amount) each day. The amount in which the test subjects got fat differed quite significantly. They were all eating the same amount each day, yet it didn't really matter that much for some people, and mattered quite a lot for others.

Well, once the cameras are away, I guess you don't. The whole point of the show though was to kind of prove this point. It also explored the potential evolutionary reasons for it. The idea was something like, when food was scarce, which if you go back hundreds to thousands of years ago this would have been more often, there was an advantage to being able to store more fat. And something like that might be the reason why that genetic trait persists.

Most studies conclude kinda the opposite of that show.. other than some more wide variation in things like reaction to sugars humans for the most part have very similar metabolisms.

But I'd be curious if you had a link or something; was it a TV Show or a scientific stufy?

It was a TV show. Although, I thought this was kind of established anyway; that there is a genetic element to obesity.

Searching 'obesity genetics' on Google brings up this:

Obesity Genetics: A Predisposition
More commonly, people who have obesity have multiple genes that predispose them to gain excess weight. One such gene is the fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO), which is found in up to 43% of the population.23 Jul 2018

It was a TV show. Although, I thought this was kind of established anyway; that there is a genetic element to obesity.

Here's something I found that jives with everything I've read about.

https://examine.com/nutrition/does-metabolism-vary-between-two-people/

Quote
One study[1] noted that one standard deviation of variance for resting metabolic rate (how many calories are burnt by living) was 5-8%; meaning 1 standard deviation of the population (68%) was within 6-8% of the average metabolic rate. Extending this, 2 standard deviations of the population (96%) was within 10-16% of the population average.[1]

Extending this into practical terms and assuming an average expenditure of 2000kcal a day, 68% of the population falls into the range of 1840-2160kcal daily while 96% of the population is in the range of 1680-2320kcal daily. Comparing somebody at or below the 5th percentile with somebody at or above the 95th percentile would yield a difference of possibly 600kcal daily, and the chance of this occurring (comparing the self to a friend) is 0.50%, assuming two completely random persons.

Quote
Metabolic rate does vary, and technically there could be large variance. However, statistically speaking it is unlikely the variance would apply to you. The majority of the population exists in a range of 200-300kcal from each other and do not possess hugely different metabolic rates.

There are way more people who claim their metabolism causes their obesity than science can account for is generally what I've read.

I don't know.

And the TV show I watched was years ago, so I have no idea now what it was called.

Interestingly though, that evolutionary theory that was explained on the show, which I also mentioned, is actually on the wikipedia page.

Some studies have focused upon inheritance patterns without focusing upon specific genes. One study found that 80% of the offspring of two obese parents were obese, in contrast to less than 10% of the offspring of two parents who were of normal weight.[27]

The thrifty gene hypothesis postulates that due to dietary scarcity during human evolution people are prone to obesity. Their ability to take advantage of rare periods of abundance by storing energy as fat would be advantageous during times of varying food availability, and individuals with greater adipose reserves would more likely survive famine. This tendency to store fat, however, would be maladaptive in societies with stable food supplies.[28] This is the presumed reason that Pima Native Americans, who evolved in a desert ecosystem, developed some of the highest rates of obesity when exposed to a Western lifestyle

In terms of the current science on this though, I don't really know. Haven't looked into it.

I stopped eating sugar, started doing IF (everything from 18-36 hour fasts) weightlifting and cooking my own meals, lost 20kg. I probably could have gone close to losing 30kg but the rona fucked me up.

prior to this i'd be overweight since i was like 10 years old. I went from 110kg->90kg. Now I think I'm about 95 since I started eating "normally" (sugar).

imo the fast v slow metabolism thing is bullshit. the problem is processed foods and sugar

If you ever want to be frightened just look at the caloric content of anything on the Starbucks menu that isn't black coffee.

Also, this randomly reminded me of when I was crunching at my first job in the industry and I was starting to realize how unhealthy I had been ordering. So one night I looked at the nutrition facts on the place we were ordering and looked at the salads, and a fucking salad had a higher calorie count than the average burger at the place (Islands). Only in America can we sell salads that are worse than burgers.
