I thought about becoming a vegetarian just so the other vegetarians I interact with IRL would hate being vegetarians but that lasted about a day

My ex wife was a vegeterian [insert sex joke here], I lived the vegetarian live on and off for  7 years. Don’t think it is for me in the long run though.

I tried to class up your thread with a response instead of acknowledging your little pun. :karen

Truth is, I've always been jealous of you, OttoVonLoggins. I was benji's bottom bitch before you showed up and now I just miss the feeling of his fat rolling over my face as he pounds my ass into the floorboards.

It’s okay, boo. Even you will find your ideological home some day, inshallah.  :blessup

On my plate:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meet_Your_Meat

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthlings_(film)

Other historical vegan media (books/films specifically) recommendations would be appreciated! :)

Looking to convert (:teehee) to pescatarianism. I find nearly every kind of sea or freshwater creature absolutely delicious, but that's not really the point since I will always enjoy a good steak more. It's more about the industrial meat industry conditions, the difficulty/potential hypocrisy in only consuming from "cruelty-free" sources, and some bit of research I've done on pain in fish.

I admit I'm seeking to confirm some of my own biases in order to continue enjoying seafood guilt-free, but I also partly feel this is a stepping stone to full vegetarianism/veganism. (Maybe like... 10 years down the line...) I've been following the synthetic meat industry like Beyond Burger and Impossible Burger for a few years almost in prep for this it feels like. Very excited at where it's at and where it's going. :D

That all said I was also raised in a fairly rural area and don't think I'll ever be prepared to drop whole (cow) milk. :heart

Let's not. I like meat, fish, eggs.
I am omnivorous, just as my genes intended.

If there was actual lab grown meat (consisting of real cells) I'd have no problem switching, but until then I'll keep eating the real thing.
There is no substitute for sushi/sashimi, chicken, bacon and the occasional steak.

I know, it's "halfway step" for now. :doge But I think anything in that direction is progress, and right now I just feel more kinship with my mammalian and avian relatives that makes it increasingly difficult to justify eating them.

Newsfeed.

@Andy: Don't do this half-step shit. If you're going to get off meat (:teehee ) go whole hog (:teehee :teehee ) on it.

Honestly the problem for me is that I like Sushi and while I can make "vegan" Sushi (cutting fish out, using other ingredients) it's not the same. Plus Beyond Meats is stupid pricey (compared "normal" meat) right now, so it's hard to justify economically going Vegan. Though I know a few Vegan folks (Esch included in this loosely) that make some bomb-ass meals. I'm still angry that like the first Vegan restaurant in the area got killed by change in ownership as they had this bomb Pho that was better than the "normal" one IMO. Big serving that would keep you full for like the entire day. So good. I miss it daily. :(

You keep telling that to yourself.
It doesn't matter if it's a billion or ten billion, if you don't respect the land you live on or the water you drink from you'll always run into problems. Without countervailing institutions and science informed discipline, human resource consumption is completely unbounded and you'll just run into the same problem, just at some later limit.

Having more people is always better for society anyway because most sectors have economies of scale. Having less people wouldn't decrease the burden of society, it would lower the standard of living for everyone else. To prove this to yourself, imagine a society with 10,000 people. Is that enough to support the diversity of modern civilization and all of its industries, even if only for those ten thousand?
I know, that's why I said a billion.
While there are 8 billion of us, nothing we do is sustainable.

While there are 8 billion of us, nothing we do is sustainable.

I dunno if I buy that. There's tech in the works for sustainable agriculture and the like.

I do feel the population boom is a problem (and why I'm on Team #GREATNEWSEVERYONE about the US birth-rate falling) but I don't think it's insurmountable. The issue is that humanities adaption comes at the expense of everyone elses. We might be able to "un-acidify" the water, but at the expense of fish that adapted or thrive in it.

Yeah, the oceans are going to be bare soon, we won't adapt in time. Sucks but pointing it out is the first step to helping people turn the corner on ocean agriculture
yeah but how do you reverse algae apocalypse and deadzones? Is the science there? Do they just revert back when we fix the runoff?

Probably, the planet started a desolate, volcanic blob. It'd bounce back, probably. 10,000 years, +/- a few millions. After the end of Man of course.

Let's say, 150 million people per continent in pre-defined areas.

150 million per continent? Ok, but as a weeb I demand Japan does not have to concede anyone. So that leaves about 25 million for the rest of Asia.

One stipulation. Japan will kill anyone who eats shark fin soup or provides it.

We now have 8 billion people. Who all want good food, a big house, personal transportation, travel, smartphones and so on. And last but not least they want kids, too (which they claim is a "human right").
You can either keep telling yourself that this is fine and can go on forever, because science will magic the shit out of everything (or the flying spaghetti monster or space aliens will save us from ourselves), or you can realize that it is not sustainable.

See, you say 1 billion cows are a problem for the planet because they eat so much and produce so much methane, and the cow population should be reduced. But you have no problem with 8 billion humans?

Eh I wouldn't mind if 2 billion people that I decided should die would die, but that's too much power.

I mean really big families in first world countries are tough for me to understand cause I feel as a parent I wouldn't be able to give enough attention or love (or finances lol) to any more than 3. But that's a whole different topic I guess.

yeah, like, generally this is the case. so much so where we absolutely have to have immigration to make up for the fact that the west is not growing to keep a stable/slightly growing pop. this leads to all that stuff like racist freaks harping on about the "great replacement" like people of pure anglo descent slowly dying off is a bad thing.

Do 8 billion humans fart as much as 1 billion cows?

Researchers have found that adding less than 2% of a certain kind of seaweed to diets cuts methane emissions from cows by 99%. I know there are various US companies working to produce the seaweed.

Other benefits include 'improved milk production, increased immunity, improved food conversion ratio' from one such company working on growing it.
