Which is the superior Robocop theme?
« on: May 30, 2020, 05:42:51 PM »

the movie features basil poledouris iconic theme, which represents all the near future corpora-fascist pomp and rigour that verhoevan so joyously lampoons for the runtime:

the c64 game takes an entirely different approach, representing the methadone like fugue state that murphy enters as he becomes consumed by the machine and embarks on an slow gradual divorce from the fabric of analog reality:

together they are a beautiful diptych.

You're not missing anything not knowing the TV show. If you thought the third film was watered down... The OCP CEO is borderline nice whimsical grandpa in this.

OK, but which is the superior X-Men theme?

Any answer other than the theme from the 90s cartoon is wrong.

i haven't heard this before or seen the movie, but this honestly comes off as kind of a parody to me, because, like ... where is the actual theme? it seems to be presenting all the orchestral trappings and big epic statement of the chord progression you'd expect to accompany a hero melody, but the melody never shows up.

in spite of this I still unironically enjoyed it mainly because parts of the orchestral arrangement reminded me of chrono trigger

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RoboCop_(1994_TV_series)

"Made to appeal primarily to children and young teenagers, it lacks the graphic violence that was the hallmark of RoboCop (1987) and its sequel RoboCop 2 (1990)."

So, it was basically a live-action version of the Robocop cartoon.

Yeah, though that was also the time we got a lot of low budget TV shows based on some big action / SF movies names (Nikita, Total Recall, Stargate, Buffy, Dead Zone). Nikita and RoboCop are Canadian productions officially too. Twin Peaks and X-Files pushed the envelope for production value. It was the golden years of shooting up there, I guess everyone took a shot in hopes of getting big somehow like Stargate and Buffy did.

Reading the synopsis of the episodes (I've seen some but I couldn't tell you much from memory), some of the original bite was still there at the writing level -just like RoboCop 3 premise doesn't read too bad- but it's just way too cheap and soft to really carry it.

Also this :

Quote
When his sexist views anger feminists, The OCP Chairman is kidnapped by a band of shapely rebels and forced to do housework, while Chip Chayken and his sexy partner plan to rip-off OCP.

The second live action Robocop tv show Robocop: Prime Directives is more violent and way more low budget than the Canadian one. It’s worth watching for a holy shit how did this get made vibe.

lol, but in context that section felt more like a B-melody or transitional supporting variation. so it still felt like the main theme was MIA ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not to belittle Le Canada but I'd imagine there's some financial tap dancing involved.

That is the part i whistled as a kid, so it's clearly the main melody. :ufup

Anyway, Poledouris is the best at cheesy epic music.
I mean his score for Conan is just on another level.

well it's the only actual melodic part! but it feels like it SHOULD be supporting another main melody, one that's having some wardrobe issues or something and didn't make it on stage.

Not to get all fanwank but it's not a very heroic world, or even character in a sense, he's only half of a man and he's never really free from his programming or corporate masters though not soulless

I mean it's just random musings but Poledouris also scored Starship Troopers and that one is even more overtly playing on being fascist and militaristic propaganda pastiche as a companion piece of a movie about individuals getting ground into replaceable jarheads. And while it's not a very precise description, the most famous part of that soundtrack (Klendathu drop) also is strong without having a strong theme.
