Did anybody pick up Microsoft Office 2007?
« on: February 01, 2007, 06:02:27 PM »
While it sounds like Vista is kind of a dud, everybody seems real impressed with how MS's productivity suite turned out.  Which is odd since I didn't think there was much room for refinement (at least not for casual users)...

Is it really, incredibly different?  I have to take a class on basic office applications, and I'm not sure if I should pick up the new version....classes will probably still be focused on Office '05 (I'm still running Office XP).

UI and workflow for Word, Publisher and Powerpoint are VERY different. Excel has a lot of changes under the hood, but in terms of usability, it's largely the same.

Also, and I know I'm biting at a hooked remark, how is Vista a dud? It's far more secure and stable than XP *out of the box*, is far more feature rich, has a vastly superior overall UI, and ships with the best browser and version of DX MS has ever shipped.

Minor inflated gripes are: DRM; WMP's GPU reliance; the variable memory footprint; and the ugly-ass icons. In reviews, I've seen these complaints ridiculously emphasized, forgetting the minor revolutions under the hood.

Office 2007 is OMG OMG OMG IE7 IS OMG OMG OMG. Vista isnt a dud either.

Most reviews i've read love it, calling it MS' best OS yet, however they do recommend that most home users bound to factory built PCs wait until their next PC purchase since the cost of Vista on new Factory PCs is the same as XP was. Thats a very practical suggestion, but it really doesnt speak ill of the product.

Hell MS plans to continue to support XP for a while, I dont think they expected World of Warcraft Unit Sell-Through for a 200-400 dollar OS package.

I've been running Vista 64 bit for a while, and for all my problems with it, I had more problems with the hardware from manufacturers themselves. Some were really good about getting solid drivers out, but some were REALLY bad. Some of these were big companies too. Im not sure what the cause of that is but considering Vista had been delayed a few times you'd think they would have had ample time to whip stuff into shape like ATi did. Man did they release some badass beta video drivers.

Is there a way to make the Vista start menu not have scrollie All Programs while not making it look like a Windows 98 start menu?

So if I were to take a course that's still largely focused on Office 2005, d'you think I'd be lost if I picked up Office '07?  I guess '05 will be sold at heavy discounts now if I have to get it for school, but it'd be nice to be really up to date.

Can anybody elaborate on what makes Office so cool now?

"Dud" is maybe too nasty a word for Vista.....but the DRM and poor gaming/encoding benchmarks bother me in particular.  "Wait until you buy a new PC" seems to be the main undercurrent in reviews.  And that doesn't strike me as a shining recommendation, considering they'd say that even if it was XP with a new skin/theme.  It seems like an admission that the OS doesn't provide any real tangible value that'd make you feel like you made a good $200 purchase, but it's not-so-atrocious that you should turn it down when it's "free" as a part of a new PC bundle.

the gaming performance issues are almost 100% localized to driver support on Vista, and 64-bit on particular. the idiots at Tom's Hardware neglected to mention the slightly shaky graphics driver support from nVidia on 64-bit Vista, which they ran the benchmarks on. in three months, this won't be an issue, and even then, the real world delta is negligible. Some games, like Company of Heroes, get massive performance BOOSTS under Vista.

I'm getting Office 2007 with my next paycheck as my trail one JUST ran out and I gotta go to the computer lab to fucking type my papers...Office 2007 was a gift from god :(, and I overwrote my 2003 with it, and I stole it from some girl freshman year :(.  OH well.

Vista I don't give a fucking about -- oohhh glassy windows :clap.  I just use the computer for web surfing, listening to music, and typing papers.  So I'll wait till I get a new computer with Vista on it to make the "jump" as it were.

Office 2007 spell check omg :bow

I'm a big fan of Office 2007.  Particularly the improvements to Outlook and Excel.

Word. . .the new UI is a mixed bag.  It's GENERALLY easier to format text and figure out exactly how you want to manipulate text, but it also seems like certain things were changed and moved around for no other reason than to give things a good reshuffling to make things seem new.  That said, the new Word UI isn't nearly as imposing as the task bar hell of Office 03 (there is no Office 05).

The changes to Outlook are fabulous.  Entourage is still the best PIM MS makes, but unfortunately, that's Mac only.

The "shuffling around" complaint is one that I have for Vista, too.  Particularly in the Control Panel, it seems like once familiar things have been renamed for no apparent reason.

Any of you guys do Office 2007 scripting? I'm having an issue one of you might be able to help with.

I'm trying to set up a script that creates a mail rule, but I'm having some issues with it. Here's the skinny:

I work at a university. We've got a set up now where all students receive "Student Announcements" emails, which are basically 30-50 spam shit mails a day that clutter everyone's mailbox. Students always complain about it, and most have no idea how to create mail rules or anything to stop them from hitting their inbox.

So, what our main network guy has come up with is a script that will create a subfolder in everyone's inbox called "Student Announcements", and a mail rule that takes any of those said Student Announcement emails and puts them in that folder.

The rule itself shouldn't be hard to come up with at all. I can easily create it via Outlook's built in Rules thingie. 2 problems seem to come into play when trying to script it, though:
1) The mails don't come from an email address. I'm not big on how it works as I'm basically just Help Desk, but my understanding is that the mails actually come from some Exchange folder with the display name "Student Out". If they came from an email address, I'd have had this done awhile ago.
2) I'm pretty much brand new to vb scripting. As such, I've got the rule broken into 2 parts--a .vbs file that creates the folders, and a .bas that has to be added to Outlook that allows you to run a macro that creates the rule. I'd love to figure out how to get this all into one .vbs so we can run it easily across the network, but I'm having a ton of trouble doing this.

---

With that out of the way, I've got a working version of the rule that I created for myself. Outlook describes the rule as:
With Student Out in the Sender's Address
Move to the Student Announcements folder

The script I've got can create a rule, but the rule reads as follows in Outlook after it's been created:
From Student Out
Move to the Student Announcements folder

That slight difference causes the rule not to work. I've only been doing this VB scripting stuff for a little while, and I've been trying unsuccessfully to get it working correctly. Here's the meat and potatoes of my code:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Code: [Select]
    Dim colRules As Outlook.Rules
    Dim oRule As Outlook.Rule
    Dim testRule As Outlook.Rule
    Dim colRuleActions As Outlook.RuleActions
    Dim oMoveRuleAction As Outlook.MoveOrCopyRuleAction
    Dim oFromCondition As Outlook.ToOrFromRuleCondition
    Dim oInbox As Outlook.Folder
    Dim oMoveTarget As Outlook.Folder

'Specify target folder for rule move action
    Set oInbox = Application.Session.GetDefaultFolder(olFolderInbox)
'Assume that target folder already exists.
'This can be changed to any existing subfolder
    'of the inbox
    Set oMoveTarget = oInbox.Folders("Student Announcements")

    'Get Rules from Session.DefaultStore object
    Set colRules = Application.Session.DefaultStore.GetRules()

'Create the rule by adding a Receive Rule to Rules collection
Set oRule = colRules.Create("Student Annoncements Rule", olRuleReceive)

'Specify the condition in a ToOrFromRuleCondition
'Condition is if the mail is from 'Student Out'
'send the mail to the Student Out Test folder
    Set oFromCondition = oRule.Conditions.From
    With oFromCondition
        .Enabled = True
        .Recipients.Add ("Student Out")
        .Recipients.ResolveAll
    End With

'Specify the action in a MoveOrCopyRuleAction object
'Action is to move the message to the target folder (Student Announcements)
    Set oMoveRuleAction = oRule.Actions.MoveToFolder
    With oMoveRuleAction
        .Enabled = True
        .Folder = oMoveTarget
    End With

'Update the server and display progress dialog
    colRules.Save
[close]

I don't know if perhaps my rule condition shouldn't be a ToOrFromRuleCondition or if there's something I can do so that it works looks for "Student Out" in the sender's address.

Any help would be awesome Drinky.

I'm using Windowblinds with some Vista rip off theme. Looks awesome!
Also, IE7 is not a bad browser. I'm gonna try it for a week.

it probably comes from an exchnage distribution group. see if "student out" resolves to a distribution group, and then set that as the sender in your rule.

Drinky, it looks a something like this:

/O=KINGS/OU=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=STUDENTS-LIST

That's not the exact thing (I can't view the exact name from home as I don't have Outlook. This is something similar from a 'students-list' thing).

Is that a distribution group?
