You can't really divorce the earlier religious "arguments", the two overlapped for a long time (In 1182, Philippe Auguste of France seizes all their possessions, ransoms them, expels them. Same thing in 1394, expelled and ordered to sell possessions to float public finances up). I guess for most Western Europeans the whole "they killed Jesus" and Abrahamic jealousy towards the elder son of God (and their stubborn refusal to be religiously assimilated) sound pretty vague now but it was probably a lot more visceral when the Church was a core pillar of society. The transition from religious to nation-state scapegoats really had time to bake in, even if they feel superficially different (but you can see how the stereotype of "duplicity", "dual allegiance" carried over).
And while the Rothschild and Soros always featured prominently in recent centuries, I think the hatred, envy and fantasies had a lot more concrete outlets in cities and towns where you had Jewish inhabitants or districts.

In some cases it's really just representative of peoples experiences with Jewish people. It's been known that Jewish studio execs and producers would stiff black singers/musicians out of money. A lot of these takes come from the entertainment industry. Then there's the Jewish folks in New York buying up whole buildings and gentrifying neighborhoods and only renting those buildings to Jews. That type of stuff will have massive backlash and then the people that face it will start to spread the word and start to resent you while thinking this small sampling is representative of all Jews.

Then the cycle repeats and now you've got black people posting fake Hitler quotes. And because they're black people with positions of power and influence and an actual speaking platform, they sound off on Jews which creates momentum.

Essentially, racism is a never ending evil. It's also why the idea that black people can't be racist is categorically laughable and shields black people from their own biases in need of self reflection.

When I went to Philly with my girlfriend a few years back, we went to the hotel pool our first night there. There was another couple at the pool around our age, both covered with tattoos... they approached and started a brief friendly conversation. They said they were from the area and go to Philly a lot so I asked them about cool places to check out. Much like anti-Black sentiment isn’t always manifested by slurs, anti-Semitism doesn’t always come with a lighted marquee. It’s subtle — shrouded in absent-minded stereotyping, unchallenged colloquialisms, tepid rebukes of inflammatory remarks like the ones recently made by DeSean Jackson and Nick Cannon or, even worse, no rebukes at all.

My first brush with anti-Semitism started at home. My family didn’t collect Nazi memorabilia or anything conspicuous like that. Growing up, one of my favorite things to do was visit family members in Chicago. I loved the cookouts, music and trips to the Maxwell Street Market many residents “affectionately” referred to as “Jewtown." One day I asked a family member why it was called that and she said it was because before buying anything we had to first “jew the price down."

For 40 years that conversation has stuck with me. I didn’t have the vocabulary to express or fully understand it back then but I knew enough to feel that there was something fundamentally wrong with the name “Jewtown” and how it was talked about. Despite growing up in the segregated South, I never heard my relatives speak ill of white people and I’m sure no one felt that line of thinking — that shorthand stereotyping — was harmful.

But it was. Still is. And those words coming from a Black person doesn’t change that.

As I said earlier, my family didn’t mean any harm with their stereotypes, they just didn’t know any better. Jackson and to a degree Cannon also voiced a lack of clarity on the issues in their subsequent apologies. ("I feel ashamed of the uninformed and naive place that these words came from," Cannon tweeted Wednesday.) But the ignorance of the offender doesn’t explain away everything about these recent episodes. It doesn’t explain why public chastisement over anti-Semitic comments is fairly muted when compared to the reaction to racists' remarks. It doesn’t explain why some Black people feel that disparaging Jewish people is an essential element to liberation.

Personally, I don’t think forcing a man onto his knees makes me taller.

In Texas, a federal district court has already ruled against such a state law, deeming it unconstitutional. The law required government contractors to certify that they did not engage in boycott of Israel and would not do so over the course of their contract.
