The British gaming scene from the 80’s/early 90’s was so wild. There’s this whole generation of games that if you live in America you’ve probably never heard of, designed for systems you’ve probably never seen.

Oh heck yeah. Looks like the new batch of Archipel videos is going to be coming down on us.

Also, Joe, if you really like British gaming vids, I have to recommend Kim Justice. Just some incredible deep dives that are very detailed.

A take. Not as hot take-y as the video name makes it sound. It's not meant to be congratulatory to all the haterz that can see through all the marketing and IGNs of the world, nor is it about shitting on people who enjoyed the game. Just a fun analysis on where he feels it doesn't quite all add up and some of the shortcomings with gameplay and story as well as how they do or don't align.

Is he wrong about the mission structure of RDR2?

Walking a few feet of the predetermined scripted nonsense'd give you a Mission Failed screen. How is that good game design?

Yeah Red Dead 2 is the definition of "do excactly what we say or else" when it comes to the story missions at least. It's just kind of a question if you are ok with that or not. So I'm not sure if it's simply a question of it's good or bad. As someone who likes linear and specialty crafted games that dosen't bother me. But at the same time I see the desire to want to break open the box, especially in an open world game.

I haven't watched the ND video though I usually find NJ to be funny and to have good and relatable points. Still, I liked LOU2 enough and I thought the gunplay was weighty and packed a punch. And the gameplay was fun, if you allowed it to be. If you bought into the tension and feel that ND set-up it was fun. But the moment you realized the AI's tells and how to easily cheese them the whole illusion started to crack and it's not hard to do that. I've always seen ND games as jack of all trade type games. They do a good job of mixing stealth, platforming, and shooting in thier games and making them all feel accessible, natural, and "cool". In a way few developers do. Like the UC and Last of Us games have light stealth that in the end is pretty shallow and easy, but I think they mask it well enough. Better then a lot of developers like Ghosts of Tsushima were the stealth seems so brainless. It's just when you are actually a enthusiast gamer who cares about this stuff you can easily see how shallow a lot of it is. But personally I think it's good enough.

Because he wants something that the game isnt.

Isnt the general concensus to judge something for what it is not what you want it to be

It's an open world game that completely forgoes the open part of it within the main mission design. Something as simple as flanking gives you a fail screen in certain missions.

Its an open world game but not a sandbox game

its like Mafia 2 in that regard that the missions are scripted and linear. i have no issue with that.

I do enjoy the various scenic cuts and little flourishes beyond just Mikami talking while sitting and game footage. They give a little bit of color. Really it's the music that tries to oversell it and isn't tonally in line with the subject. Though near the end of the video the music choice does go along with the theme of horror. Kinda went nicely with the RE7 footage. But yeah, I would say that they could allow more of the interview to have a much more emotionally ambiguous background track and use something that is a little more forefront only at select times. Or rather, the music being mixed as loud as it was and the style of it is much more suited for a video that was purely visual rather than verbal.

Even so, I dig how much time they give Mikami to go on about the topic at hand and his stories that are tied to the various games (insider tales, not the actual game stories  ;)). Looking forward to part 2.

Some good points from Jay here. I think he hit the nail right on the head on how the market has changed dramatically.
For me an upgrade to a 5600X or 5900X makes sense, because i'm running a 5 - 6 year old 4970k with DDR3.

However, demand now is insane because of people upgrading from 3600X/3700X/3900X or even XT models which released last summer because new tech = old tech is obsolete.
Plus some are paying way above MSRP, like $400 for a 5600X. At that price you'd be better off with a discounted 3800X or 3900X for multi-core performance.

I can see why AMD got so overwhelmed with demand. When was there ever a CPU sold-out at release and when did people skip the $300 part in favor of the low yield 12 core $600 one.  :doge

I almost fell into this trap with my 2070 Super after the 3000-series hit. But it's still like in the top 10 of fastest graphics cards on the planet and there's nothing it can't run or won't run for the next 2 - 3 years or even 4 or 5 with minimal visual sacrifices.
People are on these crazy upgrade paths now of a new GPU and now CPU every year. Which is totally unnecessary.

Depends on what you want to do with it.
For gaming a CPU upgrade doesn't seem necessary.
Practically all games should run at 100+ FPS on that CPU paired with a decent GPU.

Assuming your motherboard supports Zen 3 I would recommend to wait for the 5600(non-X) or for the 5600X to drop to a reasonable price.
Unless you can find a very cheap 3600(non-X) as that's the exact same CPU if you apply a small overclock.

If you're more into editing and after effects it makes sense to upgrade to more cores. I would recommend at least an 8-core part.
A 3800XT for example performs better in the same price range for rendering as the 5600X but at the expense of slightly worse gaming performance and a higher power draw.

5600X is just a beast for gaming, not much else. 5800X(8 cores) and 5900X(12 cores) are better for productivity.
The 5900X is the better value buy because for just $100 more you get 4 more cores compared to the 5800X.
That's because the 5600X is just a 5800X with 2 faulty cores disabled and the 5900X is a 5950X with 4 faulty cores disabled.
Only a pristine 8-core CCX can be used for the 5800X. Once AMD has enough left-overs they're likely to introduce the 5600's and 5700X's as well.

So currently you're looking at (Euro prices):
5600X - 319,- (better single-thread - worse multi-thread than 3800XT)
3800XT - 429,- on sale: 349,- (better multi-thread - worse single-thread than 5600X)
5800X - 479,-
5900X - 579,-

But currently 5600X's are going for as high as 400 which makes no sense to buy as a CPU primarily for gaming.
And at some point they'll probably discontinue the Zen 2 chips as they would only be competing with their own parts.
If I was in your shoes I would either get a 3800XT or save up for at least a 5800X or 5900X.
