It would be cool for historical purposes, but I'm pretty sure Stoltz was terrible. He wasn't funny at all and I don't think I've seen a single member of the production wishing the Stoltz cut would leak out of the vault.

You can see water bubbles in the space station footage of 2001.

I only know about it because it gets posted to reddit every 3 months and makes the front page.

But evidently, in order for Zemeckis to get the opportunity to make the movie, he had to take Stoltz as the lead. Eric Stoltz was just coming off of Mask, which was a huge hit, and the studio wanted to make him a star. But Zemeckis got them to agree that if the early results weren't satisfactory, he could replace him. So, you could imagine that Zemeckis probably didn't put him in the best position to succeed or bend the script to fit his strengths. He probably always intended for Stoltz not to work out.

This is the footage that's out there:

And photos:

The story floating around about it:

Quote
It’s almost impossible to picture anyone besides Michael J. Fox playing Marty McFly in Back to the Future. But when the movie started filming, that’s precisely what almost happened.

The original actor who was cast in the role got replaced midway through filming — and worst of all, they didn’t tell him about it until weeks after the decision, which made everyone uncomfortable. The studio always wanted Fox to play McFly, but he had a scheduling conflict filming Family Ties.

Actor Eric Stoltz was meant to portray Marty McFly after the studio passed over Johnny Depp, Charlie Sheen, and John Cusack for the lead role. Then Stoltz awkwardly got fired before the film premiered.

Also, Cristopher Lloyd was the second choice for Doc Brown. They originally wanted John Lithgow, but he was unavailable at the time.

shut up

Thanks for throwing me down the rabbit hole.

I wonder if Stoltz got kicked off the set for being a perv.

I read a rumor that Zemeckis really wanted Fox, but the studio wanted to film before his contract with the show was up. So Zemeckis gave Stoltz no direction while filming in order to sabotage his performance.

The story goes that Spielberg gave him that advice, because once production started, it would be harder for the studio to cancel the project. All he would need are some bad takes to show the higher ups, "hey, this guy isn't working out, let's get Fox now since he's free."

I heard that spielberg had owed fox a favor for this that and the other. When this shoot came up, fox wanted in on the action, so he set up stolz in a random dressing room to eventually get caught for

I heard that fox called spielberg's friend a nazi in an offhand remark so he demanded that god give him parkinsons.

I heard that Fox went back in time and accidentally dropped a copy of Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide in the past, and Zemeckis found it and saw that BTTF would get rated a Turkey if it starred Eric Stoltz.

I heard that Eric Stoltz is actually Michael J Fox's great-grandson from the future and he had to go back in time and mess up his role in BTTF on purpose in order to make sure that Fox got it instead.
