You ever watch Casablanca and just be taken aback?

You're used to the typical images of Casablanca. "Here's looking at you, kid", as Bogart stares down his dame before a a flight forever out of the vision of her eyes.

You think of Casablanca as a romantic film of a serious cinematic maturity.

Then you start it up and get some booming music with a credits image of the continent of Africa. Soon afterward you're greeted with a booming narrator amid a rotating globe with cheesy effects. Then you fall into a despondent malaise,"this isn't as good as Citizen Kane is it?"

I've seen Casablanca multiple times. Every time I watch it I end up thinking this.

Love Casablanca. Love The Maltese Falcon even more (which I just watched high and that's where my thoughts are coming from), and Treasure of the Sierra Madre is peak Bogart. I definitely have a soft spot for the type of acting and dialogue suited to Bogart and that era of actors (look at Peter Lorre in The Maltese falcon, or really any Peter Lorre film), which is this mildly stagey style where things are written and acted for effect, not particularly realism. The style from His Girl Friday is the one that really survived (Aaron Sorkin made a whole career out of it, and Tarantino close to it) but it's not very prevalent.

Bogart did a great job naturalizing dialog that's going for one killer memorable line after another, like the Casablanca script.

Fred MacMurray in Double Indemnity (which I know is beloved) is a good example of what happens when you load up that sort of dialog on an actor who can't quite pull it off.

I'm not big on stylings of films like Notorious, which feels aged dramatically despite the talent associated to it.

Mirrors what happened with videogame graphics and the shift to 3D (those first generation 3D games were outright fugly compared to contemporary 2D games on the Saturn).

Plus I think a lot of shooting on sound stages rather than on location because of the frantic production schedules in the studio system.

Been doing a lot of research on ancient Egypt cause covid.

It's amazing that their entire history as we knew them lasted longer than the entirety of what we call western civilization. The fact that Cleopatra, the last autonomous ruler of Egypt, existed closer to the Burj Khalifa than the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza is mindblowing.

So many interesting stories, like the one Pharoah who tried to bring Monotheism into the fold a couple hundred years before it was ready, resulting in him and his line being erased from history by his successors. The only reason we even know about him is because we found one of the very few undisturbed tombs, belonging to his son, King Tut. A king who was otherwise unremarkable aside from bringing back the official religion.

And all that shit happened a thousand years after the pyramids were built. So many interesting stories lost through the ages. 5000 plus years of history and we only may have a barely surface level reading of it.

And that's just Egypt. I wonder if the first cities were built a lot earlier than we think, and all that history has been effectively erased.

For what it's worth, I'm fully willing to believe the Egyptians somehow mastered construction several orders of magnitude beyond anything prior to them in human history - and for at least a few thousand years after as well - just to build some tombs for their god-kings only to promptly stop and lose the knowledge or ability to replicate such feats.

Half sarcastic btw. I want to believe in Zeal from Chrono Trigger but there would be undeniable credible evidence for it by now - unless you're into aliens and/or illuminati conspiracies to fill the gap.

Why did I take so long to listen to Robyn's last album. Holy shit.

Not high but regular weed use has helped me with anxiety, depression, and most notably my ADHD. The strains I've been getting really help with time management and I've been getting everything done. I feel so normal and I'm able to execute things systematically in the way I want it, which lowers anxiety/depression single handedly. I'm not really ashamed I need weed to be normal or happy. No replacement for therapy but it's still great and helpful.

My morning routine is wake up, do yoga, go for a morning walk while vaping green. When I get home I shower, eat breakfast (guacamole on toast) then I read news and start my day. This routine has been really wonderful and healthy for my well being even if I don't get that high sometimes. If I need to clean that day I clean after showering and everything gets done by noon. It's bliss.
