Cuties Discussion Thread
« on: September 14, 2020, 09:33:44 AM »
Cuties is a movie about social norms as an eleven year old Senegalese immigrant is thrust between the orthodoxy of her religion and the overt sexuality of the friends she's made in France. It won a Sundance Award.

It has been through a ton of controversy, to the point where Senator Ted Cruz has labeled it "child pornography" and has demanded the Department of Justice to look into Netflix, the American distributor, as well as French filmmakers to see if a violation of CP was made.

This goes beyond mere arthouse film and has been thrust into even political as it has become seen as a symbol of the culture wars and a magnet for Qanon. For this reason, I think it deserves its own thread.

- - - - - - - - - -

My thoughts on the movie:

I think it's great.

One thing that I think many have missed about the film is how it tackles the topic of normalcy.

What is "normal?" That word could be considered the main theme of the entire story and the entire crux of its storytelling.

Amy's family is adjusting to their move to France as her father takes a second wife. Some of Amy's family have already settled in France such as her aunt. The aunt tells her mom to put on a brave face and that women must be strong as she's forced to personally call friends and family to announce the wedding of her husband's second marriage and for God to bless it.

Her aunt tells her to call someone else.

At one point she breaks down crying, muffling the phones sound to hide it, and plays it off like it was a bad connection. Yet still, she continues on unable to express her own grief of the situation, partly because she's not allowed to. The entire family treats the marriage as a normal piece of life.

Before the wedding the family's apartment is strewn with gifts given by family and friends.

No matter what anguish it causes Amy - stealing, acting out, depression, neglecting her brother - she and the women of her family are told to accept it as normal, to not even question it. But is it? Far from it. They are complicit in normalizing behavior that tears a family apart while diminishing women and their role in the family.

Similarly, Amy and friends create a bubble of pre-teen sexualization where their  antics are treated as normal and even embraced among their peers. Further into the film Amy becomes the 'it' girl for her sexual dance moves: the girl you either want to be or be with as per the student population. But this emboldens Amy as she no longer knows what's normal. At the lowest point of the film she posts a picture of her vagoo on social media and her friends distance from her, she's called a slut, has her ass slapped. Despite this, she still wants to be one of the girls.

At the dance competition surrounded by, not her peers, but leering adults, the eyes watching them aren't in awe but disgust which breaks the facade of whatever "normalcy" the girls created. Parents cover children's eyes, mothers visibly look concerned, the judges start to argue.

Then the walls start coming down and the truth of Amy and her actions dawn on her.

None of this is normal.

When she gets home her mother finally speaks up for her, telling her aunt that Amy has justified reason to be so upset and that she doesn't have to attend the wedding she's been dreading so much. Her mother gains the courage to admit that none of this normal.

She chooses neither the dress, which binds her to her culture's tacit approval of her father's second marriage, or the clothes from the dance competition which normalize her own body in sexually explicit ways. Neither are normal.

At the end of film Amy walks out with standard western clothes and realizes she doesn't have to choose between two cultures without normalizing the worst excesses of both and their treatment of women. Finally happy and proud to be her true self.

Ted Cruz calling this child pornography is high key admitting he got turned on by it, admitting he's a pedo. :doge Powerful film with very disturbing, if necessary imagery. Fuck CardiB and Nicki Minaj. You would think a film that completely and utterly rejects the excesses of modernity would be up conservatives' alley. Instead, they expose themselves as pedos and people completely unable to appreciate artistic statements. Americans are backwards and deserve Marvel and Snyder movies.

Great film.

Reactionary people are sensitive to 'optics'. They don't really care about digging into nuance or understanding the subtlety of a topic. It doesn't matter what political persuasion you are, if you're wired this way then you behave the same. Just different triggers.

Much of this (outrage and discussion of the topic) feels like similar terrain we covered when Toddlers and Tiaras debuted and made a big buzz.

Is it?

I haven't seen the film, and have zero plans to watch it. The initial poster/synposis I saw, was like nope.  Then from reading excerpts of reviews and people describing scenes.  It sounds gross as fuck. I won't deny there is merit in the story being told.

However, that doesn't negate the definitions of what is classified as certain things. This isn't a documentary, this is a film.

I've got no dog in this fight, but it definitely seemed like Netflix was either totally tone-deaf regarding how they were advertising the movie or deliberately trying to provoke backlash for free PR.

I did watch the video cindy posted and some of those scenes were pretty gross.   The thing is this is movie so why do the girls actually need to be 11 yearsold?  Like why not do something more acceptable and legal like get some young looking 13 yearolds and film the whole thing in vatican city?

Americans are troglyodytes.
It's not an American thing, people jump to conclusions everywhere, based on headlines (which is what happened in this case).

This is far from the first film to talk about child/teen sexuality, there's a million movies that approach the subject more or less crudely, and the only difference is that this one got main stream attention because it was on Netflix, and they had the brilliant idea to sell it as some kind of sassy comedy, with that horrid poster.

Have no interest in watching the movie (just because it doesn't interest me in general though) but from the trailer and reviews, it's clear it's some kind euro coming of age piece like Celine Sciamma's films or Lucille Hadžihalilović's are, or even some of Andrea Arnold's (in Fishtank, Fassbender rapes a teen age girl! OMG!).

Speaking in general, certain cinema remains niche for a reason.  :yeshrug

Its a US/UK thing in that dancing = pornography.

Like if the kids were shown having simulated sex, thats one thing. But...theyre dancing.

Toddlers learn this in Brazil.

Its not supposed to be sexy...its hilarious.

When people like Ted Cruz look at this and get dirty thoughts, thats on them.

Islamic fundamentalist might hate the film (they will) because it promotes the idea that -spoilers-

a man taking another wife without caring how his present wife feels is awful, and that if a woman doesn't want to wear a hijab, it should be up to them.
[close]

I'm sure there's other stuff too, but i've yet to watch. What i've gathered is that the main character is in a strick, morally backwards religious household so she acts out by basically trying to become the opposite of what her family expects of her, but takes it way too far and at the end realises she ought to stop trying so hard and just be herself. It sounds like a pretty stock standard coming-of-age film message, but no. Somehow it's united Tulsi Gabbard, Ted Cruz, and ISIS in opposition. There's a pretty good chance 14 days from now Chris Wallace will ask a question about Cuties during the presidential debate. This is life now.

I could immediately see what the film was going for (and thought it looked good), but I also think the 'outrage' was totally and utterly predictable, nay inevitable. Context has no place on the internet. I only wish I hadn't learned so much about the film second-hand, because now I'm not that bothered about actually seeing it.

I'm expecting a similar response to the new Spitting Image series, given that they've chosen a black celebrity to caricature. No amount of explaining the history of the show is going to wash, people will flip when they see the puppet.

People keep saying that but what's the alternative? They're not naked. How else are they supposed to articulate how the girls see themselves? How would a reaction shot even work by itself without context?

Exploiting children? As long as the actresses were safe on set, and reports show they were, how were they exploited? This isn't Milo and Otis.

Same. That's my point from before. I never paid attention to that shit and it makes me go  :what because people are lingering on the girls' crotches. This just tells me more about them than it does the movie. Little girls here wear tight pants and short shorts all the time and I'm definitely not lingering. Yet Ted Cruz defines it as child porn. Surely that says more about him than it does the movie?

I don't know, somethings don't have to be depicted.

For example, I think a more poignant story could be depicted without gratuitous shots of 11 years boobs and asses.

There's a point where you're not able to view visceral reactions to these things as part of the narrative arc, and instead a means by which 11 year olds are more or less exploited by a consuming class that has more to benefit from its "exploitation" than being impacted by its message.

Some of the shit that goes on in the movie is legit disgust-inducing even w. added context/intentionality.

Let's cut through this argument, shall we?

"Some things don't have to be depicted."

How? Movies are a visual medium. In movie business you show not tell. While you can use editing to censor things, like Hitchcock's shower murder

In this case we know the severity of the action - in other words, someone is being killed. Even with the fancy editing and lack of gore, we're still visually clued in on the act.

In the case of Cuties, the film has a very in your face approach to the discomfort. Just because it's made to incite an uncomfortable reaction doesn't mean it's bad or exploitative. Unlike, say, murder, it handles a far more sensitive topic that requires an actual example for the actors to partake in.

What are the limits of "this shouldn't be depicted?"

In Blood Diamond, we see a child get high on heroin. Yes, it's not real. But the argument is "it shouldn't be depicted." Well, it's being depicted for all to see.

Ultimately, film is a visual medium hinged on acting. This isn't real. It was made in a controlled environment. It forces reality by showing you the truth of it.

There's no way you way say Cuties is child abuse while saying Blood Diamond is A-okay. Both show horrific acts involving children to tell a story within the confines of a moving picture. Those are children holding GUNS!!!! That child is SMOKING! CHILD ABUSE!!! :stop But at the end of the day it's acting.

Another child abuse film.

CHILD ABUSE!!! :stop First shot of that entire montage was a kid puffing on a cigar.

Went on Letterboxd to check out what's being said: people i follow seem to think it was fine, but there were a heap of really brain dead "review bombs". Clicked through to a few of the profiles and their #1 films were all basic shit like The Lego Movie, Aquaman, Stand By Me, Shutter Island, La La Land etc.

Islamic fundamentalist might hate the film (they will) because it promotes the idea that -spoilers-

spoiler (click to show/hide)
a man taking another wife without caring how his present wife feels is awful, and that if a woman doesn't want to wear a hijab, it should be up to them.

Saw it today. It's still all kinds of creepy. I get the message they were going for, but the way the camera lingers on crotches and ass is weird as shit. It would have been a much better movie even if all the content stayed if the camera wasn't so goddamn pedotastic.
