The Borat sequel was the first movie made during the COVID-19 shutdown, shot surreptitiously as quickly as coronavirus shooting restrictions were eased, and unions were in agreement on a return to shooting. When that happened, Baron Cohen and his team were filming the movie the next day with a minimal crew.
Baron Cohen rushed to have the film ready to open before Election Day. The first film was a big success, grossing $262 million worldwide for Fox. Given the fact that that studio was swallowed by Disney, and theatrical releases are more perilous than ever in the pandemic, they decided the best way for the movie to be seen by its widest audience before Election Day was to open on Amazon Prime before the end of October.

Loved this; doesn't hit the same highs as the first due to how little they could actually use the title character with the public, but given the undeniable constraints it's really damn funny. The daughter killed it.

The overtly political stuff was whatever except for the QAnon guys and the rally. The daughter stole the movie. The interaction with the “babysitter,” the debutante ball (that girl calling her dad a gross creep) and the speech at the conservative women conference were.

Story arc and ending too pat but will redeem the movie for “oh grosss” girlfriends.

Yeah, the first half was what I came for, but the increasingly heavy story intertwining took me out of it. During the late portions I just wanted to know how much script the nanny had, for example. That and SBC often failing to stay in the right accent for some reason - not even talking about the situations where he had to do it on purpose like during the nazi rally.

imo that's why Who is America was much better, as he didn't need to work around the limitations of Borat. I guess it follows the tradition of the first movie also not being nearly as good as the Ali G show

Was pretty disappointed - the only genuine laugh I had was the "my father is smartest man in whole flat world" line.

There was a lot of heart warming stuff even outside of the scripted father and daughter bonding storyline - the babysitter telling his daughter to be happy with herself, the holocaust survivor at the synagogue giving him a hug, a kiss and a hot meal, and even the QAnon bros giving food and shelter to a rando foreigner in the middle of a pandemic and helping him find his daughter... but I'm not watching a Borat film for feelgood moments, you know? I'm watching for the faux-naivete giving people just enough rope to expose who they really are.

I knew some of you wouldn't like it, as the Borat movie is just an extension of the Trump cinematic universe.

It looks like they did cut out a lot of material though to make it more 'a story' than just Borat messing around.
Start of the movie kinda shows you why though, everyone knows who he is by now.

I found it a lot less mean-spirited and more caring than the previous one. I found myself feeling warmly toward the "targeted players" — I felt like these people are victims of ignorance, more than actively BAD people.

Speaking of which, on FB my nephew mentioned, "It’s frustrating that so many people think if a story doesn’t come from me Democratic funded news site, that it is fake news."

…I don't even know how to respond to this. I'm open to suggestions.
