I just watched Taxi Driver for the first time
« on: December 17, 2020, 01:09:33 AM »
I don't know, I just felt like it

well to be completely lame it's because the redlettermedia guys have brought it up a lot of times over the years and it just felt like it was time

I really see why people say Joker was like baby's first Taxi Driver

I know I'm not going to be unique in noticing or interpreting anything about the film, but something that stuck out to me was how he was sort of a blank slate getting filled up by everything he experienced, every detail gets added to his life and becomes part of his obsession. he says he's gonna get one of those posters that says "I'm going to get organiz-ized" and later it's there in his apartment, he researches the senator running for president, he has to own the same gun the crazy scorsese talks about. everything he encounters that would just be an offhanded comment or experience for a normal person, he studies deeply and incorporates fully

it's kind of a dark fucked up innocence, not realizing that it's inappropriate to take a date to a porno theater...and later we see him trying to watch normal movies, like "this is what normal people do"

I also read about the crazy guy who was inspired by the movie to stalk jodi foster and attempt to assassinate reagan. thought it was really quaint by modern standards how part of his insanity defense was that he'd seen the movie more than a dozen times  :doge

I meant to say more but I was practically asleep when I posted  :zzz

the portrayal of New York at that time was one of the more engaging parts of the film, felt like it pulled no punches, in fact the whole movie was presented very matter-of-fact in a refreshing way

trying not to spoil too much, I liked how the film balances on essentially random chance with regard to his plans at the end, a few tense moments made all the difference in how he ended up being perceived by the world

I've been meaning to watch it ever since the bus pass episode of Hey Arnold!.

it's worth watching, maybe not one of those movies that you watch to have a good time and relax but it's just one of those really significant movies. feels weird to just say "I liked it," like it deserves better words than that, but also I don't think it's the kind of movie you're not supposed to traditionally "like"

Scorceses like Spielberg, in that he knows how to make a solid ass film, and even your lesser known stuff like a Mean Streets or an Amistad is still pretty good watching

Travis Bickle isn't a good guy, Scorsese should be ashamed of himself for making this alt-right movie.

im not sure if the median american associates city-life with vice and iniquity as much as they would have ~45 years ago. generations have passed in which municipal policy and the extension of the state’s ability to coerce has sequestered crime to specific areas of the urban landscape. and the rates on property and violent crime have also plummeted. im not sure if the moral tension of the movie’s as ready-to-hand for younger people: you need to have felt unsafe in a city and considered whether the answer is a swift, violent, probably masculine, display of retributive force.

you should watch falling down next, where michael douglas assaults a convenience store clerk because of inflation :wow

Falling Down is Racist Angry White Guy: The Movie: The Prequel. I did not enjoy my first watch and I don't intend to watch it again.

It put me off seeing Lost Boys, which I had been looking forward to. Schumacher (RIP) is 0-2 for me. :trumps

You're right. It was more racist than incel, I will edit my post.

Regarding Lost Boys: I think it’s still worth checking out, but it’s absolutely a movie of its time, so it might not connect the same for someone today watching it fresh.

I’m offended btw

Wtf were you implying with that comment?  Lol

You have a reputation for Douglas-style anger and beefs :trumps

I was not implying anything racially-related for you, that's a separate complaint I have with the writing.

Yes, loved First Reformed, some were getting up its ass because it treads familiar ground (Winter Light, Diary of a country Priest, etc) but whatever, it fits well as an updated take on the concept.

Also i should say i love most stuff Schrader did, Mishima being one of my favorite movies, but also his remake of Cat People, The Yakuza, etc...

I'm not sure if its about feeling unsafe as it is about feeling isolated, and the tension between feeling alone while simultaneously crowded by others, which is a pretty universal singleton big city life and probably more so than ever this year.
