ok, let's hear em: new year's resolutions
« on: December 28, 2020, 08:58:06 PM »
- CONTINUE to lose weight. Since I've already started, I'm not like those people that only say they're going to start losing weight when New Year rolls around.
- CONTINUE to jog and work out.  8)
- really work on my style this year. I don't care how much money it takes, I'm going to get a wardrobe I'm really proud of.
- Be on schedule for graduating in Fall 2021 at the latest.
- Adopt a dog. Preferably a poodle but we'll see what space allows. As long as they are a GOOD BOY
- Continue to work on my mandarin and practice with my new buddy I met on discord
- be fluent enough in tagalog to surprise my mom
- volunteer outreach for CalFresh. or something similar
- work on at least a couple of my personal software projects
- visit Mexico City
- visit Monterrey Bay, Point Reyes, Mount Shasta, Glass Beach, ...

I focus on goals over resolutions, and have broken the large goals listed below into smaller achievable chunks which I believe will make accomplishing things more likely. I've been doing a rougher/less organized version of this philosophy in 2019 and 2020 and it's worked out, by and large.

Get a Driver's License
Expected: February
I'm a loser baby (so why don't you kill me.) :trumps

Pass ABRSM Piano Grade 1
Expected: February-March
Booking for 2021 opens in two weeks and my official exam book should be here soon from the UK. My teacher and I are laser-focused on getting me prepared to pass Grade 1, and "thanks" to COVID they now accept remote exams which works to my advantage. Even after two years of playing and practice, my teacher and I both feel Grade 1 will be stretching me to my limits. But once I pass, I'll be on a path with clear goals and points of accomplishment and pride.

Join the WGA
Expected: April-June
Second half of 2020 was comprised of building up a cache of short scripts and notes on other writers' features, first half of 2021 is focused on writing features and pilots, submitting to contests, seeking representation, and achieving the credits necessary to join one of the most powerful unions in the country. I won't be surprised if I can't achieve the latter by June since such things depend partly on luck and circumstance, but I should definitely be on the right track by then I feel.

I accelerated my plans to become a screenwriter. Originally* I wanted to wait until a couple years into my 30s, but I realized life is too short, and I'm privileged enough to have a safety net as I transition careers (as embarrassing and frustrating as it is living with your parents in your late 20s.)

I really hope I can hack it at writing, because that's where I've always expected I'd end up. (Conversations with my bosses over the years inevitably boiled down to "Why don't you want to become a manager? It's the next step and you'll make way more money doing way less coding!") For me, coding was an enjoyable hobby (got my start hacking up Geocities and Freewebs pages) and a means to an end: seeing my stories come to life.

I launched a failed Kickstarter for a web series half a decade ago (partially funded by my programming salary), and I'll surely have more failure ahead, but I'm at the point where I'm solid in what I want and how I think I'll get there. My half-dozen self-produced short films contributed the necessary experience and confidence to make this decision as well.

*I mapped out most of my life when I was like 14-15 and have been surprisingly consistent about following through on those things.

Do a better job of supporting my mom and other sibling. Something I might go into detail about in the mental health thread once I have a bit more clarity in the coming weeks. In short, shit got real a few days back and I can't let my mom shoulder all that weight. Even if I am in a different country the vast majority of the year.

By the end of 2021 I would like to live in a different place. Same city, just different roommates and an apartment that isn't freezing during the winter in freaking Chicago of all places (I have to use a space heater in my room otherwise it's unlivable. I wear a jacket in the kitchen and living room. AKA the landlord don't care about the old furnace until it dies and we don't want it to die in the middle of winter). Roommates are fine too, but I'd rather live with someone that's more of a friend than merely an acquaintance. This resolution is more of a "if something better pops up then take it" scenario. I love the price and the location of the apartment. But if I could be with someone I really get along with and the location is a little worse or a little pricier I'd be making a change.

I am going to start releasing my music. My indie-synth rock stuff will just live on streaming services where I’m sure no one will listen to it but I’m also sitting on about a dozen lo-fi beats that I’m really going to try to pitch to the lo-fi playlist gods (im looking at you, Chilled Cow)

Career wise, It’s been a few years but I’m going to study my ass off and get my wine knowledge back to where it was.  If I can budget in a bunch of wine to taste I could probably pass the level 2 Sommelier Certification, though that’s not really my goal, considering how expensive it can be preparing for the blind tasting portion of the exam.

Lastly, on a personal level, I’m going to write my long distance girlfriend more letters. 4 months to go and we will be together again. This year has been really hard on us considering how difficult it is to travel.

Take pictures every day. Hopefully get into grad school - already applied. Get good enough to take commissions by end of the year. Find a future wife. Watch more films. Cook more food. Get more active in my community and tie this together with my photography. Get closer to God. Start to take give things that aren't really that important less of my time - people are used to my word salads and it's not worth articulating yourself in any way in text form on the internet. I'm already getting started on that one it seems going by this post.

I'm also privileged in that even though I've "abandoned" coding, I already have a potential job offer lined up next year from a former coworker.

But I really hope I can hack it at writing, because that's where I've always expected I'd end up. I never got a college degree for it, but somehow ended up making six figures anyways... Partially due to Silicon Valley bubble frothiness (which may be gone forever) and being at the right place at the right time, but still.

I launched a failed Kickstarter for a web series half a decade ago, and I'll surely have more failure ahead, but I'm at the point where I'm solid in what I want and how I think I'll get there.

Never knew you had this passion. Go for it.

Thank you. :D I'm really pulling for you too. :heartbeat I've tried to keep a mental list in my head of creatives I know so if any of us make it we can stick together. If you want I can intro you to the animator who helped on my Kickstarter, he's doing really kickass stuff these days and he loves helping people.

I'm actually trying to get back into Flash animation a little too (one of the most economical and independent ways to adapt high-concept/action-y short scripts), but haven't had a lot of time for it lately. And my drawing skills are crap at the moment, but I posted in the Art Thread about how I'm trying to improve there.

Didn't know you were into photography! Even though I'm an amateur who (used to) post to Insta all the time, taking a good picture is so satisfying. Definitely keep at it. :)

I gave up on animation. I sent a pm on discord. The day I gave up on it I quietly cried in a restaurant alone.

I don't draw anymore. When I do, it's to supplement my photography.

*Get a new job
*Study Mandarin every day (I have dropped the ball since October).  I've never been tested but I think that I was at an HSK2 or close.  So get to HSK3.
*Watch 50 movies
*28 books
*Design a boardgame with my friend
*DM a lot and be inventive with RPGs
*smoke pot at least once a month
*go camping
*run and lift
*see my family more.  Talk to my mom more than once a month or whatever I've let it fall to.  I love her
*surprise the SO with romantic gestures again
*do better in my volunteer work
*survive

- Finally roll out the marketing and business strategy I have been working on for months last year
- Finalize negotiations to increase my stake in the company
- Focus on quality not quantity (I've been doing that for a while now)

One of the things I'm most proud of was my ability to end our reliance on government COVID aid within 3 months and renegotiate quarterly SLA's for our biggest clients into yearly contracts (fully paid in advance),
achieving YoY revenue growth in November and tripling our revenue in December compared to last year. In fact I don't think our company in its 20 year existence was ever this profitable in a single month.

- Explore options to buy my own place (my current place is decent but the rent is high)
- Reconnect with some old friends
- Take more vacations (I've had 2 this year: 3 weeks in July / August and now 2 weeks in December, but I need to take some shorter breaks too)
- Buy a 3080 Ti or Atmos sound system :idont

Send out some happy new year texts to people I hadn't seen in 2 years.
They were like: "Breh, good to year from you" etc.

One is in the area and visiting this saturday.

-Play less vidya
-Use the extra time to pick up a new hobby
-maybe learn some dance moves for the non-existent clubs for the next 12-24 months. All the dancing I do in Beat Saber to R&B/Pop/Hip-Hop has got me feeling more confident that I could maybe dance alright. I love dancing, but I've never been confident enough to dance in public so at clubs I just chill by the bar.

-Meet the person that I'll hopefully marry in the next couple years, this one is kinda a big one for me. Really feel like 2020 fucked my life plans of being married by 40 at latest (late 2021). Gonna be in the mood to make up a lot of time here once vaccines are available and can feel safe dating.

-Oh and for realz I might rent a wharehouse and build a $5 entry haunted house maze that takes you to the moon and running from an inter-dimensional tentacle demon (Shuma Gorath-esque) eating stars. I was putting this plan together for 2020 when 2020 happened. 2021 might actually have a halloween and I've got enough time to plan this so it's possible, though figuring it for 2022 is probably a safer bet. For creative stuff I work a lot better with another person as I get mental roadblocks a lot and like to shoot ideas around. If I get in a good relationship with another creative, it'll muse me to getting a lot of creative stuff done I think.

-Survive, yeah, that is pretty big one. I had to go and get my IV meds at an infusion center this week and every time I go it's scary as hell because of Covid in So Cal. I got my will and advanced health directive done this year just in case. But the sooner I can get a vaccine the better since I don't see covid getting better in my area until summer/fall because people are dumb selfish fucks.

-Resolution for 2023 - Move to Canada, New Zealand or somewhere else, I'm so over this country after covid.

I accelerated my plans to become a screenwriter. Originally* I wanted to wait until a couple years into my 30s [...]

*I mapped out most of my life when I was like 14-15 and have been surprisingly consistent about following through on those things.
My current plan is to work at a tech startup until it's acquired before the bubble bursts, and then reinvest that money smartly in stocks/bonds/etc. [...]

I know that a long way down the line (mid-30's) I want to do pure content creation and live off that instead of programming. My own short animations, my own short movies (full indie movies?), my own short novels (and later full novels.) Gotta practice until then though, which I'm trying to do on the side right now.

Oh hey it's that master plan I referenced earlier in a random post from 7 years ago 👀

I'm not totally full of shit I swear 👀

I can do this ✌🏻
