i was able to find a job that i love after losing one the in pandemic's early days. it is my first remote job.

it's kinda nuts how more efficient i am using async comms like Slack, no small talk nonsense, no commutes.  i do miss the office at times. but i'm way more productive at home.

It works for some, but it's not for everyone.

The last decade of my working career i was able to access my work computer from home, which is great if you can't make it into the office but still has some shit to do.
But whenever i did it for more than a day or two in a row, my productivity would dive off a cliff.

On a side note, when i quit i had a six month notice period and the last three months was 99% from home, and i don't think i did more than 5 minutes of work/day. Good times.

I always thought bosses liked on-site because it made them not have to confront lazy coworkers. Like the type that puts a lot of effort into looking busy but constantly asks/demands their coworkers help them do most of their work.

Some people talk A LOT about collaboration being easier in person but I have yet to hear a coworker suggest a good idea in natural conversation. Usually if they have a good idea of any kind, they'll explain their thoughts in a well-formatted group email or an actual presentation. I've had lots of meetings where we sit down and solve an urgent problem but that is honestly easier to do remotely using a phone call and screen-sharing than trying to get everyone huddled around one persons laptop.

Aren't you in a creative industry though? I imagine most of your communication involves planning workflows and coming up with new ideas.

I was already working remotely most of the week before the pandemic- glad to be at home if for no other reason than not having to deal with traffic and being able to sleep in later every day.  The only thing I miss is talking in person to some people during the day.

I don't miss going into the office.  My commute was an hour each way on a good day and now I can sleep in a bit and get to see my son for more than a couple of hours a day.  I can also take care of stuff around the house like laundry and doing dishes, or play games/watch TV, while I wait for reports and automations to run.

My big complaint is that I couldn't get my equipment from the office before it was locked down, so I went from a nice PC with dual monitors to an ok laptop with a tiny screen.  Also my "home office" is in the kitchen and sitting on a kitchen chair isn't good for my back.

It has pointed out how much dead weight my company is carrying, people who can't work without someone constantly looking over their shoulder.

Agreed. It's hard at times to have what would've been a ten minute in-person in conversation not take hours to resolve itself over Slack or Discord.

Still don't miss going into the office, though. I work in the basement and have my daughter on the other side of the room doing school. It works really well for us.
