Looking for a new office/gaming chair
« on: April 08, 2021, 06:01:52 AM »
I'm looking for a new chair so I was wondering what you bois and gals are rocking.
Currently I'm using a knock-off sort of gaming chair. Very comfy but not very ergonomic and working from home has made it wear out quicker than I expected.

Those Secret Labs chairs look pretty cool but I'm not sure if they're that much better than regular gaming chairs and then there's reviews that say that you should absolutely stay away from gaming chairs.
The second type I'm looking at is more of the executive/director chair type.

I'm not really on a budget but I'd like to keep it below 300 - 400 Euro.

I wish people'd stop using the word ergonomic for mass produced products. The only ones in that category that are ergonomic are ones that are highly adjustable like that Herman Miller Aeron chair.

You want an ergonomic chair? Go to a specialist. You most likely won't find one for that price.

I've got an IKEA Markus chair which has a mesh back, can highly recommend.

Needed something that had a high back because I get bad neck pain

Yeah, I figured as much. I don't find the Herman Miller chairs very appealing though.
I remember a client had them around the office and I didn't like it at all.

Those secret labs chair looks comfy but also a bit overpriced for what is essentially just another gaming chair even though they get great reviews.

That Markus chair is an interesting one, I just received a bunch of other stuff from Ikea today and totally forgot they also sell desk chairs.

I also recommend the Marcus chair. It's comfortable, but less adjustable than an expensive office chair. If you take regular breaks, as you should, then it will do the trick.

You mean visually?

Once you get a good chair your body/posture has to adjust. The chair that's comfy is most of the time not the one that's good for you. It's just that it accomodates your bad posture the best.

Dunno if they have the Container Store in your country, but if not, bungee office chairs are amazing.  Super comfortable and not too pricey (around $150).  Very durable, too- have had one for five+ years and it still looks brand new.

After different priorities I'm down to two choices for a new chair which are more or less the same chairs in terms of how they look.
So it all comes down to materials, price and comfort.

Noble Chairs Epic

This one I can get a pretty good deal on but at 350 - 399 still expensive for a chair.
Made in Germany and has a couple of certifications that other gaming chairs lack. The material is PU leather but they've made punctures to make it less sweaty than usual.
It gets great reviews and rewards but I can't tell if they're bought and paid for.

Corsair T3 Rush

This one is interesting to me because it doubles as an office chair with neutral colors. The armrests have a neat carbon finish.
No PU leather but a soft fabric which keeps it nice and cool but is harder to clean. Price is lower too at about 250. The trade off is a plastic base.

I'm leaning towards the rush because it is not a sweaty pu leather seat like I have now and basically the same chair for ~150 less.

I had a noblechair and it was fine, my only real complain was it gave you a serious case of swamp ass during the summer. Started breaking a bit here and there after a few years though. On  the Herman Miller Embody train now, and it has been a huge upgrade, but obviously also is money wise. Might be worth trying to see if you can get one used though. If you sit down a lot during the day, it really is worth it to invest into a proper good chair.

I'm probably buying a more expensive chair next year depending on the WFH situation. But I plan to go back to the office more after the summer.
This is mostly a short term replacement or a chair I sit on for a few hours a day which is also why the T3 seems more appealing.

You pretty much confirmed my worries for the noble chair, swamp ass and the chair not being much better.
My current chair went from 'ok' for 5 years to wrecked within a year of WFH.

I feel like I should either stick to the 200 - 300 range or move to 800 - 1500 and get a real throne.

I was in this position a couple of years ago.

Tbh if you got the $$$, spending on a legit chair is worth it. Really fixed my back issues. I went with Harmen Kardon Embody.

And don't get a gaming chair, they are all uncomfortable tacky shit. If you don't want to shell out for something HK or high-end at least get a knock off version of them in the lower price range.

I have a secret labs Titan. It's been okay for me for the last 12 months and I'm weird about chairs - as a rule, I usually find any office chair I sit in deeply uncomfortable and distracting.

I love that the Titan is very firm. Like super firm, to the point where people who like smooshy chairs hate it. But it really is the firmest chair I've sat in, and when my posture matches the chair, it's very supportive.

Unlike ergonomic chairs though, the range of adjustments is not amazing. It is adjustable - back, base tilt - all the usual bits, but the shape of the back of the chair is quite rigid, so if you sit in a weird position, you may find it uncomfortable over a long duration.

The only other negative for the titan is that the rubber on the arms has started to crack and tear and this is quite a common complaint, judging by le internet. The latest 2022? models address this by making the tops of the arms magnetically replaceable, so I'd imagine this is less of an issue with the newer models.

My mindset is very much like yours - I'm using the Secretlabs chair in the short term, with a view to upgrading next year (I'm thinking about the Steelcase Gesture, although I really want to find one to sit in before I spend that much on a chair). However, I have used the Titan for a daily driver for the last year in 8-12 hour spells and if anything, I have less aches and pains than I did in the 'ergonomic' chairs that I used to sit in at my old office.

PM me if you do decide to press ahead with a purchase, as I have a code that can get you a discount. It'll give me something too, but I think it's just a lame cleaning kit or what not, so whatevs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I went ahead and got the T3 Rush. It should be here tommorow.
I'm just done with PU leather for now and like you I'm particular about chairs.

Out of the Secret Labs models the Omega seemed more appealing to me, but they've gone up in price since I looked at them a few months ago.

If the T3 lasts me 3 - 4 years that's fine by me. Hopefully longer but that'll probably depend on the WFH situation.

whoa the T3 rush looks intense, looks like swamp ass city to me :lol I'd love a miller aeron 2 but i just get generic ergo office chairs. Idk what mine's called, just whatever I can make my work pay for, for the office and at home. extra tall for my long ass legs and arm rests. would love an aeron 2, but too pricey, work would never approve, i refuse to pay myself and tbh i think these things are nearly just as dece without the industrial design flex tier pedigree. Basically this but steel base construction https://www.opd.co.nz/shop/en/action/furniture--1/chairs-632913--1/office-chairs-633469--1/office-chair-cloud-ergo-with-arms-3507709

not actually too bad given exchange rates, duties and sales taxes here. just a pricey chair. sounds really damn good, though i bought a really nice comfy leather 3 seater sofa the other week for less  :lol (was a floor model for under half the sticker price tho). will be keeping an eye out for deals

Yeah, a lot of the Herman Miller knocks offs are just as good for a lot less price. Definitely the way to go if you don't want to just total splurge.

I got an Ergohuman and can recommend it, they are are pretty good quality. I think you can order replacement parts individually, so if you get the cheapest used shit you can find with holes in it etc. and order new parts it can still work out price wise.

Now that I'm consulting, I'm thinking about buying an additional chair for the hours I spend on video calls. Something comfy and not as rigid.

Opinions on this? https://www.eurotechseating.com/executive/nuvem - I think it's the :success chair I deserve.

The main problem I see is leather, which means swamp ass.
But then again you are doing video calls so pants are not needed. :trumps

First impressions of my new chair are positive. Very comfy so far.
The material stays nice and cool unlike fake leather. The white and grey color scheme looks nice.

Not a chair for everyone though, It's clearly designed for a slim built so not really suitable if you're bulky or obese.
The chair itself is pretty light, about 24kg / 53 lbs. Easy to assemble and it rolls smoothly across the floor.

Probably suitable up to 75kg / ~150 lbs and 180 - 184 cm / ~ 6" - 6.2"
I'm about ~140 lbs / 6.1" so it fits perfectly.

Remind me again - is it cloth? If so, how does it feel? I hate the feel of cloth car seats, would rather fake leather.. so is it similar?

It's a cloth fabric but not like a car seat.
More like what you would find on a couch/sofa.
