A girl I went out on a couple dates with years ago was still on my Facebook friends list. She has RA and has been posting about covid fear and ripping into anti-vaxxers for the past year, fair enough and I agree. But over the past week or so I’ve seen her post countless videos of her at bars and at concerts on dates and shit with no mask and no care in the world.

so tonight she updates her Facebook status and says she thinks she has covid and then goes on to blame anti-vaxxers. So I comment and say, ya know..”Take some responsibility for your actions”, maybe stop going out to bars and shows and posting videos and tons of pics of you maskless in public around dudes you’ve just met.( I didn’t say that last part to her) She quickly deletes the comment, then messages me over messenger asking what’s my problem, I don’t know her and what is she supposed to do, hide at home forever? She then says I’m a dick, tells me to shut the fuck up and then blocks me.

so am I a dick? I don’t think so. While I agree anti-vaxxers are an issue, you can’t lay blame entirely on them if you aren’t doing what it takes to be safe. Vaccination alone doesn’t cut it.

Seminal comes from semen, latin for seed. In technical usage, like biology and science in general, it's meant to refer to its seed origin. However, when used popularly it can be easily mistaken with semen. So I personally decided to avoid the term and use alternatives such as pioneering, formative, foundational, groundbreaking, influential. Same with saying "Book A is the bible for this topic", where bible comes from biblio, latin for book, but I'd rather avoid the word due to other popular connotations just to make sure nobody in the conversation might feel uncomfortable.

Mods: I plan on explicitly referencing some very not-OK words in this post for the sake of illustration. Please let me know if this is unacceptable and I will remove them.

I've been hesitant on asking this question to anyone for years, but as a man born out of wedlock to a single mother, it has been bothering me... a lot. The western world still has a ways to go as far as eliminating bigotry goes, but a lot of progress has been made in the last few years. Generally speaking, if you go out in public especially in a major metropolitan city, shouting the words "cigarillo", "distinguished black fellow", or "distinguished mentally-challenged fellow" will garner some uncomfortable looks, almost guaranteed. These are hateful words with hateful origins and their unfavorable nature has been fairly well acknowledged in western society.

What baffles me however is the total normalization of the term bastard. A term that dehumanizes people, especially men, born out of wedlock to single parents. Even people who claim to be valiant supporters of social justice, frowning on the "r", "n", and "f" words, use it nonchalantly. These same people - who claim to be totally against toxic masculinity - using a word that not only implies men without fathers are less of a "man", but less of a human being.

Again... given the contextual implication of this word, why is this term so heavily acceptable, especially around Resetera, which is one of the biggest proponents of social justice on the internet today? Can someone please honestly explain to me why the same people who see the inarguable ugliness in the aforementioned words and still use the term bastard freely shouldn't - to be utterly frank - go fuck themselves?

It feels legitimately dehumanizing to be apart of a society and a community that claims to practice social justice and still freely uses the term bastard. I expect that behavior for the far right. I expect more from the left and this forum. If actual "bastards" like myself can't turn to the left for solace from toxic terminology like this, who then can we turn to? It feels like I'm robbed of a voice - that my disposition isn't "up to par" enough for people to be sensitive about it.

Some who read this might think I'm stirring up outrage for the sake of outrage, or simply being contrarian. I'm not. And if you truly do think that, how are you any better than the alt right who belittle social justice as "outrage culture"?

Others might think: "but people who use the term bastard aren't actually referring to children born out of wedlock". Fuck off with that bullshit. Do you think half the idiots on 4chan who fling the term "cigarillo" around every corner are actually referring to homosexuals?

One last anticipatory counter argument - some will likely say "but those other words have way more history/weight to them than the term bastard" - fine. I'm sure they do. Does that mean it's still OK to use the term bastard in a derogatory sense because it doesn't have as much "weight" as the other words? This isn't a pissing contest.

I haven't crafted my argument in this post with very much diplomacy, and for that I apologize. Despite my frustration, I legitimately want to hear counter arguments about why free use of this word is politically OK, especially around these parts. I am open minded enough to hear some arguments.

Mods, if you take some kind of action on my account for this post, I ask that you do so gently and preferably with a warning. This post was crafted with honest intentions.

Being born out of wedlock is itself pretty destigmatized and is getting more and more destimatized by the day. I don't know if there is continuing oppression of people born out of wedlock still. Kids don't get harassed at school for being born out of wedlock like they do for being gay, black, or non-neurotypical. Have you faced discrimination or harassment for being born out of wedlock, OP?

Yes I have. As a kid I would get weird looks from other kids when I told them I didn't have a dad, and even weirder looks when I told them he wasn't dead - he just wasn't ever there. Some would even remind me, on a daily basis, that I'm an "actual bastard" - surely an excuse for young children to use a "swear word". Have you ever known what it's like to have a major gaping hole of your adolescence be diminished to an excuse to use a swear word?

Years later, during my first job, my then-boss jovially teases our deficit of "manliness" - "come on guys, where was your dad when you were a kid to throw ball around?"

Being born out of wedlock may be less stigmatized in today's society, but growing up as a boy without any kind of father figure is absolutely still perceived as disadvantageous, especially straight men who have preexisting expectations from society that might not be feasible or natural for them because, well, we never grew up with it. Try living in a more conservative state and the problem/stigma becomes way more apparent.

Found out my fiancé (1.5 year, 10 years dating) had been cheating on me since July, shitty part is I found it was multiple people.

I sort of suspected it a little while back but of course she denied it, I found out when I saw a text on her phone and then the rabbit hole opened up. She is telling me all the stuff I want to hear but it’s hard to buy it, I really love this girl and it’s hard to let it go but I think I should. She’s talking about going to counseling and getting help for infidelity. It’s been a tough year on us both with moving and her Dad dying, really put her in a tailspin.

Reaching out to see if anybody has ever mended their relationship after something like this, is there steps or anything I should do to get trust back?
