What are definitive AAA/AA titles on Steam?
« on: March 04, 2023, 05:07:24 AM »
For a multitude of life reasons and also the fact that I naturally gravitate towards indie and strategy titles, I realize that I've not played a surprising amount of AAA and AA titles that could be considered must-plays. With the exception of the Destiny, Fallout, Bioshock and GTA franchises this is a particular blind-spot for me.

I've got some time to start going back and snapping up some of the bigger titles that I've missed. I have the Batman Arkham titles on my list, a couple of Assassin's Creed games and a Far Cry Title so far. What other games from 2019 and earlier should I be aiming to grab?

P.S. No CODs or FIFAs pls

These come to mind from the 2010 - 2019 era:

Resident Evil 2 Remake
Resident Evil 7
CONTROL
Portal 2
The Witcher 3
Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
Death Stranding (although not everyone likes it)
Titanfall 2 (the campaign is really good)
Red Dead Redemption 2
Assassins Creed Odyssey / Assassins Creed Origins (these are the best from the modern AC games)
DOOM 2016 (if you haven't played it yet, play this before Eternal)
DOOM Eternal
NIER: Automata
Dragon Quest XI
Dark Souls Series
Sekiro: Shadows Die of Twice
A Plague Tale: Innocence
Devil May Cry 5
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Rise of the Tomb Raider (all are great but this is the best out of the 3 modern TR games)
Wolfenstein: The New Order (if you haven't played it yet, play this before TNC)
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (play this if you enjoyed TNO)
Wolfenstein: The New Colossus (play this if you enjoyed TNO + TOB)
Forza Horizon 4 + 5
Hitman 2
Final Fantasy 15 (didn't care much for this myself though)
Skyrim

I think all of these are on Steam.
2010 - 2019 is sort of a weird time in gaming because it was prior to the renewed rise of Japan and during the surge of GaaS/MMO/Battle Royale projects.
So you either get the tail end of a series from the Xbox 360/PS3 era (Mass Effect 3, Bioshock Infinite) a lot of 'remastered' 360/PS3 games for PC/Xbox One and PS4.
Many of those 'big' GaaS projects like Anthem that publishers sunk a lot of time and money in bombed though.

Some other games like Dead or Alive while enjoyable became entirely focused around paid DLC and or loot that made them worthless.

2017 - 2019 is when Japanese gaming really took center stage again with the likes of NIER: Automata and Breath of the Wild (these launched the same month) and those good times lasted until COVID and everything got delayed.

Which Far Cry?  Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is the only one you’ll ever need.

Most everything is on Steam now. Ubisoft and EA are back on it, though a few minor titles from the backlogs are missing just because nobody cares about Syndicate even though it's awesome. EGS exclusives are basically the only thing that's not and those have dwindled down to like Saints Row. Funny enough, of the one-time console exclusives missing, it's mostly Microsoft now (Halo 4+, etc.) because of what Sony's been doing. :lol

Speaking of: Saints Row 2, Saints Row The Third and Saints Row IV. Although that's not really what you asked for since they're AAAA titles.

The EA / Ubisoft situation of getting back on Steam is literally the Thanos meme. "You couldn't live with your own failure and that brought you back to me"

They spend a decade building "platforms" and rebranding them over and over again only to end up back on Steam with less resources to develop actual games and fewer consumers that are interested in their products.
When Battlefield 3 launched along with Origin in 2011 it actually had the popularity to support and make gamers install a new store, now Battlefield is just barely a blip on the radar.

Some obscure shmups and visual novels I think.

Think all the main Yakuza/RGG/Like A Dragon games hit steam by now. Playing them all back to back might get old. Zero, 7, 4, Kiwami 2. All good entries.

"BUTTS: The VR Experience" is an animated VR short about love, trust, and learning what it means to be truly free.

I don't know how much you like RTS games but a lot of those have never made it to console in any form.
