Feeling out of place at work
« on: June 07, 2024, 04:08:50 AM »
I went back to customer service after my editing contract wasnt renewed. That already sucked but I had to get a new job, and cs is where I have a lot of experience even if I didnt want to do that type of work anymore.

Now i work here, in a small team for a company thats about to go under. A reorganisation has already happened and around 20-25 ppl were let go, not including me (sadly). I wouldnt have minded a payout.

But my contract is still valid till january next year. I work in a small team of six in total. Two very young girls of 22, a older woman who is very kind and also my direct boss, and two guys, one around my age and the other a bit older.

I feel out of place. I dont feel like I can talk a lot with them regarding things Im interested in. Also jokes and stuff dont always fall well. Last weekend one of my guy colleagues got stuck after a trip in England. So I said jokingly  'you're not getting stuck in England again this weekend are you 🤣'. He was annoyed. I said well are you planning anything fun, he said thats none of your business -_-. Wow what a weird response.

The girls are nice but also i cant talk to them about anything they are such girly girls all they talk about is makeup and boys.

I feel like Im wasting my time in another dead end job. Not only might the company go under anyway, im also feeling joyless. Not happy going to work at all. I dont feel socially accepted. I am a bit of a introverted guy abd pretty sensative so comments like 'thats none of your business' really hit me hard. I was just trying to be friendly.

What should I do in this position? I want to work in video editing but honestly after my contract wasnt renewed, after finally landing a dream starter editing job, really hit me hard and my confidence in my abilities has become super low. I have t really made much of interest ssince.

Sorry for the rant

You not renewed on the editing job doesn't mean you're not good at it. Lots of circumstances could've led to it. I personally would still try to get a job editing if that's what you're dreaming about. The best sale for an editor is showing good edits to any position you see available. And if you keep being rejected it might just mean bad place and time and someone who showed something more compelling: it still doesn't mean anything about your abilities.

Prob just need more time for them to get to know you. Doesn't sound like you're being a jerk and I know you're reliable so they'll come around.

If you’re paying rent and keeping food on the table, you’re not wasting time in a dead end job. You’re meeting adult responsibilities.

However, it’s understandable that it’s unsatisfying. Esp after you’ve done something you enjoy and are good at.

Keep applying for jobs! Update your portfolio! Dust yourself off and keep going.
