I'm not going to see 2 Fast 2 Furious, a film about cars and racing because cars and racing are dumb. Why would I pay money to see that movie, then walk out and go, "Holy shit, it was about CARS and RACING!"

Movies that are very upfront about their subject matter and deliver as promised are one of those enter at your own risk type things.

a) i think the godfather is a very well-directed movie with some amazing performances. however, it has been ripped off and satirized so many times that i find the movie almost unwatchable now -- its familiarity has become unpleasant. hence, i find it "meh" on a personal -- not a critical -- level. unlike some of the idiots around here, i can easily separate the two levels.

I feel that way about De Palma's Mission: Impossible nowadays. Enjoyable action fare for its time and pretty damn well directed, but it's been spoofed and quoted so many times it kind of takes away from the film

Mission: Impossible, easily, up until The Matrix, was the most spoofed/satirized action film of the 90s. Specifically due to one scene. The Godfather has been quoted, spoofed and even ripped off in animated form (Clerks, to say the least) probably more than any other movie in existence.

Most people don't even know what The Evil Dead is.

You, like most modern horror doesn't crib from Evil Dead. I've heard more "mainstream" folks quote Evil Dead than Mission Impossible or The Godfather combined. I guess it depends where you live, but the moral of the story is that anything considered a classic is bound to be spoofed/quoted, and letting it effect your enjoyment of the film is pretty distinguished mentally-challenged.

Willco -- yes, I have. The minute I mention Evil Dead I'm almost sure to get an "I love that movie! 'Hail to the King, Baby!', 'Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun!'". When I mention Godfather or M:I, I either get an "oh, I've heard of that movie" or a "wtf? that one with Tom Cruise? bleh".

The writing may be pulp, but it's vastly better pulp than the shit the entire Star Wars series featured. It had interesting, reasonably three-dimensional characters and a fairly sophisticated sense of humor -- none of which was present in ANY Star Wars movie.

Not saying star wars plot is godly, it isnt. But the KOTOR storyline is cheesey fanfic nonsense regardless if it is enjoyable(and it's one of my top Xbox games). It has a Han Solo rip-off(Carth), the jedi girl was omgz tough and a rebel JUST LIKE LEIA LOL, yoda rip-off, R2 rip-off...etc

It just took the best characters of the OT and made weird rip-off's of them then put it in the past.

No, it took the character classes (which were based on archetypes from the movies) from the Star Wars D20 game. Beyond those archetypes (and your two examples are dubious because out ide of Carth using blasters and dressing a bit like Han, he wasn't even remotely similar; and Bastila turned out to be not very tough at all despite being a Jedi), the characetrs aren't even remotely similar to those in the OT, the two little repair droids aside.

Lucas is a terrible writer. Many, many videogame writers are better than him. Why should anyone be surprised that he's so easily one-upped? Is this your "creators should control canon despite being demonstrably incompetent" argument again?

ESB and ANH weren't moving if you were past the age of 12. After that age, basic literacy should ensure that the characterizations and dialogue in those two movies should elicit horrified giggles, not emotional responses.

I'm talking about the writing and the characters. KotOR's writing added far more human dimensions to the characters, and the plots actually took interesting detours. HK-47 was funnier than the entire OT combined.

Lucas is a TERRIBLE WRITER. Even Chris Claremont couldn't make those Willow novels readable.
