THE ULTIMATE DEPARTED DVD DISCUSSION THREAD
« on: February 09, 2007, 11:59:49 AM »
Shamelessly stolen from DVDTalk:

Quote
for those questioning whether or not the steelbook is the two-disc, this is taken from bestbuy.com:

"Limited Edition Steelbook packaging with exclusive package art only available at Best Buy. This Best Buy exclusive contains the 2-disc set, containing over 2 hours of bonus features, including two revealing documentaries on the real-life events that influenced the story of The Departed."

looks like i'll be getting my copy at best buy

$23 for two discs, a steelbook case and postcards?!?! :hyper

LOLZ you crazy kids. Though I own my fair share of day one DVD purchase garbage, er, memorobilia, I increasingly see how pointless it is. I have 3-4 movies now with these "steel book" thingies. They dont make the film any better, I dont revere them above my other DVDs, and they often look ugly and stick out in my collection. Hell, my favorite film of all time, The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, had a SE DVD come out in 2004, with a bunch of "special" stuff (big huge booklet, glossy color photos, etc), and even though Ive watched the film countless times, I havent looked at any of the other stuff since the first day. In conclusion, these sort of gimmicks are just that, gimmicks. 1 or 2 disc PLAIN JANE cool cover version for me.

Aren't they selling the single disc set for the price of the 2 discer because of the "steel" case (which would actually be aluminum, lolz)?

Either way, my decision has been made: single disc version. Ive read the IGN and DVDTalk reviews, and scoped out the extras and whatnot. Looks like what extras are there pretty much aren't even extras about the film itself (a general Boston crime doc, a general Scorsese doc, deleted scenes, and a general Scorsese/crime doc). The only extras pertaining to The Departed seem to be the deleted scenes and the trailer (which I love). All reviews say the disc is awesome on the A/V side of things. So single discer with the great sound + pristine transfer + the trailer = win for me.

"Collectors will love the single-disc Steelbook edition, which includes unique artwork and postcards and is available exclusively at Future Shop"

Anyways, I don't care either way, as I said, I find fake steel cases to be a bit of an eyesore, and will be getting the regular one.
Also, you should be kissing my feet, since I am defending your beloved movie over at GAF.

I enjoyed it more than Children of Men as well.

I don't want to get into a argument with Solo and Shake (who both favor CoM) over which is truly the better movie, but I go to the movies to entertained first and foremost, and The Departed did that better than any movie I've seen in a damn long time. Children of Men was mindblowing, but I feel like it took a little while to really get going.

My 2 cents:

Entertainment: Casino Royale > The Departed > Children of Men
Filmmaking and overall: Children of Men > The Departed > Casino Royale

In other words, I can objectively say that I think CoM is a better film than TD, which is a better film than CR. But while I'll buy all 3 DVDs, Ill be watching CR and TD much more than CoM as pure-entertainment-after-a-long-day viewing.

Just felt like throwing CR in there. All 3 are fantastic though, and my top 3 of 2006.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than children of men thank you.

I found it more enjoyable than CoM, but I have to say CoM is the better overall "film", in the Solo, snobby kind of way. :P

What's snobby about that? I think it shows a level of self-understanding that you can objectively differentiate between films that you really enjoy for whatever reason, though they may not be incredibly well-made, and films that are expertly crafted, yet might leave you cold.

Or if you meant my use of the word "films", it's always the term I have preferred. "Movies" has always sounded kind of dumb to me.

I've decided I may just get the regular 2-Disc. There are still rumors that BB's two disc has different material than the regular, and I'd rather not have the discs overlapping in the case. :/

Maybe if the doc was up to date and actually featured Marty discussing The Departed, Id be a bit more interested. As it is, the doc is from 2004, and depending on how early it was filmed, may not even cover The Aviator.

Ill wait until Marty retires or dies, when someone can do a full doc on his entire life/career, then I'll buy it in an instant.

True, but it will cover a vast filmography including Goodfellas, After Hours, Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, the Last Temptation, etc.

I can live without a mention of his latest two films.

Brick? It was a decent effort, if poorly acted, plotted, and overly pretentious. ;)

Quote
The funny thing about The Departed is that it sneaks up on you like a thief in the night, except the thief is walking around in broad daylight screaming to the cheap seats about how much of a thief he is and how unmercifully empty everyone's piggy bank is going to be before proceeding to steal every last dime right under their noses just as he promised. Everyone knew that because it was a Martin Scorsese film it was going to be unmissable. Every one knew it'd be entertaining because it's a remake of an Asian action/thriller starring pretty much everyone a dream cast would feature. Everyone knew that because it's a Martin Scorsese crime flick edited by Thelma Schoonmaker and shot by Michael Ballhaus it'd be shit hot in the A/V departedment. We knew it. How could it not be a blast?

The thing is, the first viewing of The Departed is truly that thief. It's so damn funny and so damn cool that the actual merit and quality of the film and its amazing script go somewhat unnoticed. How can this film be THIS good?

That about sums up why I love love love this film. <3

then the director doesnt know his source material. it went over his head. the relationship between the two leads was integral. the departed completely missed it and it was a shallower movie for it.

The last scene in IA, the flashback of both of them as kids nailed the point of the movie. Also IA was set over 10-15 years while TD was just 2 years. Half assed or what.

These people can't be serious. This is worse than Willco hating TD without even seeing it; this guy is actually holding it against the Departed that such unecessary cheese was kept on the cutting room floor.

Oh, and those claiming IA is shot better than The Departed? Don't make me laugh. True, it has some very interesting visuals, but it couldn't touch TD with a ten-foot pole. ::)

Most of them are in love with IAs visuals for 2 reasons:
- its one of the few HK films that actually could pass for a Hollywood production
- Christopher Doyle, who is also worshipped heavily amongst the HK crew, for his work with Wong Kar Wai. Doyle wasn't the cinematographer on IA, though. He just consulted a bit

Honestly, though, IA -- while a great film -- is full of generic cheese. Example:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
IA:

-When the Queenan equivalent is killed, we see a super slow-mo descent down into the streets, with crappy, daytime soap opera playing over it and the Costigan equivalent crying.

TD:

-The scene is played in realtime, and Queenan's death off screen has just as much of an impact without needing a long, drohning score or super slow-mo.

I dont think its excusable, per se, but that it comes with the territory. And thats fine. Theres also a lot of shit that Asian films do much better than domestic ones do. So its a 2 way street. I especially have a hard-on for most things Korean.
