This movie is pretty damn good so far. I'm completely sucked in right now.
Good man. Stick with it. The film is insanely different than anything youve seen, but its also insanely rewarding.
really you cant think of 2001 as a traditional movie, or else you just wont enjoy it.
Indeed. 2001 isn't about character development or the narrative. It's about the experience.
What the FUCK did I just watch?
That was completely different from any movie I've ever seen. I don't know what to think.
I just know it was a absolute assault on my senses for the most part.
You just watched one of the greatest films ever made, by one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived. And "assault on the senses" is a perfect description, Juice. From HAL's meltdown onwards, Kubrick treats us like a $2 whore. And I like that.
If there's any one reason to watch it, outside of it being one of the best movies ever, it's the special effects. The models used here will never appear to be outdated.
Truth x 1000. The practical effects used for the space scenes have NEVER been topped, and still look real today. That's because they took the time and did things right, spending countless hours on meticulous setups. Kubrick was known for being a technical virtuoso, and I dont think thats ever more evident than in this film. The effects are mindblowing some 38 years later.
Also, the 10-15 minute mindfuck of Dave heading to Jupiter never ceases to amaze me. A major studio in todays world would NEVER release this picture. God bless the 60's.
One of my faves. Still have no idea wtf is going on those last 30 minutes or so, but...
Well, the whole film is about evolution, as the three acts are broken up as such (and the black monoliths symbolize each evolutionary leap). The monkeys learn to use/make tools, which was the first evolutionary jump. The next jump is man in space. Then when HAL goes crazy, and Dave is forced to shut him down and make it to Jupiter on his own, the final evolutionary leap is made. Dave arrives in the chamber, and begins aging rapidly, and the final monolith appears when he is on his deathbed. The final evolutionary step is Dave (aka man) being reborn as the Starchild, a higher form of intelligence and being, and being sent back to earth.
