I like Collateral more too, and think it's Mann's best film. But we're in the minority here. Most will say either The Insider or Heat.

Oh well, let this be the first time me and MAF are in complete agreement!

I think HEAT carries more star power, but honestly I am more impressed when Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise pull off good performances than Pachino and Deniro

Heat felt too bloated for my tastes. At almost 3 hours, it's at least 30 minutes too long. Collateral is tight as fuck and perfectly paced at around 110 minutes.

Oh, Collateral, the movie where you could guess the ending within the first 5 minutes of the movie? Collateral the movie that had the ridiculous shoot out in the dance club? Collateral a movie whose whole angle is "OMG TOM CRUISE IS EVIL!!!1" You take out Jamie Foxx's awesome performance (which at least grounds the movie a bit) and you have just another popcorn flick, ala Mr. and Mrs Smith.

Although Heat was about 20 minutes too long, the bank heist shootout is one of the greatest scenes in the history of cin-e-maa. Also had powerful scenes where the daughter kills herself and then the final, sitdown meeting between Pacino and DeNiro that carries the film.

You could tell that Foxx was gonna kill Cruise within the first 5 minutes, in which we saw Cruise once walking through an airport, and Foxx driving random fares around town? Wow, you are smart!

Collateral was not only about the ending but the strangely personal journey both men take part in through the night. A person I watched it with commented that the movie, for all its shooting and punching and killing wasnt really that loud, and I think that speaks of the intended understatement on that aspect of the movie.

I dont think Collateral is the same 'kind' of crime drama as heat and as such benefited from better pacing and a theme that is easier for the viewer to relate to.

No, you knew that Cruise was coming in to do a job, and you knew that Jamie Foxx was dropping off a Lawyer/love interest that was involved in a big murder case.

Doesn't take a genius to connect the dots.

Heat fuckin' sucked. It had three barely-redeeming qualities:

1. Al Pacino hucking the TV out a window.
2. Val Kilmer's arm growth. WTF.
3. It's not Velvet Goldmine.

It was one of the most boring, poorly-paced crime moves EVER.

Collateral fuckin' ROCKED. Jamie Foxx was really fuckin' good in it, and TOM CRUISE DIES.

The sit down between Pacino and DeNiro is pure gold.  I honestly don't remember a lot of Collateral, and that's pretty good, because I have a pretty damn good memory for films.  Heat is very memorable.

Id argue Collateral is pretty damn memorable. The banter between Cruise and Foxx, the malfunctioning of Cruise's perfect killer, and the growth of Foxx's backbone are all pretty memorable. What MAF said is pretty much spot on. It's about the journey each man takes. Also, the Club Fever scene was my favorite action scene that year. The bullet sounds on the DVD almost blow my windows out.

Heat had a LOT of extraneous bullshit that Collateral didn't have. Did we really need all the segues to Val Kilmer's deteriorating relationship? Actually, did we really need to see Val Kilmer's awful performance at all?

Yo homie, is that my briefcase?

The best part about that whole scene is after he has shot them both. He picks up his case, then shoots the guy once more while walking away. Cracks me up everytime. Its so badass yet hilarious.

What the fuck???? I'm the only person that's on Willco's side? Heat rocks. Yea, it might have been too long, but the cast is just about 10 times better. I was pleasantly surprised by Cruise's performance in Collateral (that part with the briefcase is fucking awesome and hilarious), but I just didn't like the film as much as Heat. Maybe I should watch it again - I've only watched it twice  back when it came out on DVD - because I just didn't think it was anything special. It was good, but meh, I thought it was more boring than Heat. Maybe I do have a "hero-worship" of De Niro and Pacino, but they just ruled in Heat. As Willco said, the sitdown was great...and the shootout is just fuck awesome. Even the ending chase and duel (or whatever it's called) is damn good (even though you know who'll win), and the music that comes in is just WOW. Amazing movie.

Scarface is a terrible movie, yet it's redeemed by awesome 80's cheese, a campy soundtrack, Stone and De Palma doing massive amounts of coke, and Pacino's most over-the-top performance of his career. I'd give it about a 5/10, but its the ultimate guilty pleasure.
