Taxi Driver is usually put into Top 10 lists, where it doesn't belong. There's nothing really bad about it, and like most of Scorcese's overrated films, it's just a good or darn good film that becomes some kind of OMG BUST UR NUTZ-type film. As for what films I'd place lower, I have no fucking clue. It's not even in my Top 20. Probably not the Top 50. It's a good, three star film.

It's on AMC. Just went on commercial. It's pretty good so far; nice pace, and De Niro is awesome. I love how you get a sense of the city as he drives around

Yeah, it's easily one of DeNiro's better performances. Although, I'll always love him in The Godfather: Part II.

De Niro is great in this movie. He's nailing the odd, social outcast role without being over dramatic, cliche, or contrived. You can see that Travis is extremely...sociall inept. But despite that he goes on a date with a hot chick lolz. Hearing him try to get her to like him made me smile. Not in a "haha that's funny way", but more in a way that it felt real. Like somthing I would say, or any other real person

Anyway, another commercial break.

When De Niro said he wanted to take her to a movie earlier in the movie I had a feeling he'd take her to a XXX one, but seeing him actually do it - and being oblivious - was priceless. He didn't understand why taking her there would be socially unacceptable to most people. Instead his reasoning was that since he saw other couples in there, it must be ok. Socially he watches what others do and attempts to mimic it in order to fit in, but it doesn't work.

He's extremely paranoid and is disgusted with the city. The movie portrays him as a realistic maniac with an serial killer mind instead of some boogie man picking up people at night. It reminds of Seven where one of Spacey's diary's reveals that he saw a man so revolting to him that he threw up on him; it's that kind of insanity

He kills 3-4 people, goes into a coma, and then comes out - and isn't locked up? Instead he's out on the street, doing his job as if nothing happened? That doesn't make any sense. At first I thought it was some kind of dream sequence, and he was still in the coma.

But at least he didn't get the girl at the end lol. That would have been really stupid.

9/10 from what I saw, but I NEED to see this unedited. If the movie ended after Travis held his fingers to his head and uttered "bang...bang...bang..." and then closing his eyes, it would be much higher imo

Nothing's in stone, but the post-shootout scenes are largely perceived as Travis' own dreams, not what actually occured after the shoot-out.

I.E. After the shoot-out Travis either dies or goes to prison, and what we see are false, contrived scenes that he imagines would happen in his own perfect world.

Wow, I'm pretty much the opposite. Raging Bull has never quite seemed like a classic to me.

That's the feeling I got. Although from a casual perspective it didn't seem that way. The movie featured many clear parts in which Travis created and propogated a fantasy world with respect to the way he perceived himself, such as the card to his parents or the story he told Iris at breakfast about working for the government.

But yea, this was a good movie. De Niro was hauntingly amazing. While he's most known for playing badasses (Godfather, Goodfellas, etc), here he plays an extremely vurnerable, socially inept maniac.

I always say the most important thing to me in films is good acting. All the central preformances in this movie ranged from good to great. On the great scale is obviously De Niro, but also Jodie Foster. And complimenting the acting was the equally great writing, which was rooted in reality. It felt like real people were being presented, not some bastard writer's perspective on people. This was especially evident in De Niro's narrative. It wasn't perfect or contrived or anything; in fact it was a rambling mess at times, but it worked because it described the cluttered character.

Oh, Willco. You have lost so many points in this thread. Scorsese, overrated? Hell no. Keep in mind its us internet film freaks that worship the man. AKA 0.009% of the population. In the larger, real world sense, Scorsese is criminally underrated and underappreciated. He's only the greatest American filmmaker of the past 30 years, yet people routinely flock to suck the teet of his peers like Spielberg, Eastwood, and, as sickening as it is, Lucas.

I will agree that Spielberg is better on the technical side (although they are both masters in this area). I would put them about even in terms of range. And I would say Scorsese has the better track record. They are close, but personal preference puts me in the Scorsese camp.

I think Spielberg is just a better storyteller. Even to projects he's just attached to in terms of production and story, like The Poltergeist, rock. He's got more films that people love than anyone, that's for sure. Spielberg has covered way more genres than Scorcese.

My problem with Scorcese is that he's got a couple of horribly overrated films and several underrated gems. I can't call the man overrated when he doesn't have an Oscar, though. My favorite Scorcese film usually gets the shaft anyway.

Well, rumors persist that Spielberg didnt indeed DIRECT Poltergeist, although I guess he'll never admit to that. I dunno about the genres thing, people tend to think Scorsese = crime films, and thats true to an extent, but the man also made Kundun, Bringing Out The Dead, After Hours, The King of Comedy, Age of Innocence, The Aviator, etc.

Anyways, I do also agree that some of Scorsese films are overrated, and also that he has several underappreciated films. So we agree more than it appears.

Also, give The Departed a chance.

EDIT: The Aviator was great. Rock on.
