Casino and Goodfellas were better than The Aviator? :lol

people tend to think Scorsese = crime films, and thats true to an extent, but the man also made Kundun, Bringing Out The Dead, After Hours, The King of Comedy, Age of Innocence, The Aviator, etc.

Except, most of those films you noted are mediocre to just okay.  Spielberg has hit several different genres out of the ballpark.  Actually, the one film that gets no love or mention whatsoever, but I really did enjoy, was Marty's take on Cape Fear.  If there was ever an attempt to be commercial, that was it.  And it was thoroughly entertaining.

Willco, The Departed = Cape Fear of the 00's. It's Marty doing a commerical flick + a remake, and excelling at both.

Spielberg has pretty damn big range. I mean in the same year he put out Jurassic Park and Schindler's List. And in 2005 Munich and War of the Worlds.

He appeals to two almost totally different movie going audiences and succeeds at both at the exact same time (not calling JP nor WOTW great but they worked and succeeded massively with the blockbuster summer going families)

Hell, if he was able to get ahold of comedies(1941 and The Terminal didn't quite make it you could say) he might have transcended range no other director has been able to do.

Oh and Marty's best film aint a crime drama. FUCKING LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST!

Spielberg is far more varied come on. He started off as more of a thrill director, making summer movies as well as the types of movies people would go to in order to be entertained. But then he's equally as impressive with far more serious content such as Schindler's List, The Color Purple, and the criminally underrated Amistad. Then he's also very impressive with pure sci-fi projects such as Minority Report, AI, etc.

It amazes how Spielberg can in a sense have two totally different and un-connected fanbases and yet succeed with them both over the years. His drama film buff crowd and the ones in it for Jurassic Park & Indiana Jones and the last crusade.

There of course is the films that kind of fit in the middle that appeal to both. Like Jaws, Minority Report, and Raiders.

Is Raging Bull as good as everyone says it is? I saw some great clips on YouTube but I also saw one that bothered me, IE the boxing scene. I don't know much about Scorsese but I know he's a big sports fan as well as a huge blues guy. But the boxing scene I saw was a complete joke, as if whoever made it never saw a match in his life. It's almost cartoon level in the unrealistic, stylized department. What the hell? :(

I suppose it could just be how Lamotta is percepting the fight in his mind...

It was terrible in terms of looking fake. The movie seems to be this realistic take on boxing up the actual matches look like a WWE match where one wrestler hits a guy 10 times, then the other guy hits him 10 times, etc.

It still looks great though

Not really.  Raging Bull is still pretty popular.  Brian's Song has kind of died out.  Most of your mom's generation probably don't know what it is and most of our generation definitely don't.  Raging Bull is up there with Hoosiers in terms of exposure, though.

I loved Brian's Song lol, but I haven't seen it in years. I've seen Hoosiers a billion times, thanks to various coaches threatening me with it or suicides.

No, you missed my point and I misunderstood you.  I thought you were saying that Brian's Song was the overrated film everyone claims is TEH BEST SPORTS MOVIE EVAR.  And I was pointing out that it is simply too obscure for you average street walker to really have that title.  Raging Bull is almost too obscure as well, but gets enough cable play to perpetuate that.

The real answer in terms of the most overrated sports movie proclaimed as the greates ever is easily Rocky, even though I do like it.

Ah, good man.

I have never looked at Rocky as a "sports" movie, although I guess I should. Perhaps my opinion on Rocky is too clouded by the more superficial sequels. The first one is good though.

When We Were Kings is perhaps my favorite, if we are to include sports docs. White Men Can't Jump is great too. And in terms of emotionally...manipulating...sports movies go I'm a complete sucker Remember the Titans

I hate that REMEMBER THE TITANS formula Disney now applies to any sports movie.

Find a true sports story, about being an UNDERDOG.  Introduce a coach that HAS A TROUBLED PAST OR INNER TURMOIL.  Create CONFLICT ON THE TEAM.  Have the team rise to the occasion BY LEARNING A LESSON THAT THE COACH APPLIES TO HIMSELF.  Win THE BIG GAME AGAINST ALL ODDS.  BASED ON A TRUE STORY.

Yeah. But to me Titans does this much better, in part because the actual "conflict" (racism) doesn't seem forced. It's not a bunch of TROUBLED TEENS IN A CORECTIONAL FACILITY giving COACH a hard time. :lol

They pump one out every year now and they're ALL based on TRUE STORIES.

Dudes, I will say for the millionth time, Raging Bull is NOT a boxing/sports movie. Jake LaMotta could have been in any other profession and it wouldn't change the film fundamentally. It's a drama about a self-destructive loser first, a biopic second, and a sports film a distant third.

True. The boxing aspects could be left on the cutting room floor and it'd still be an amazing film.

Exactly. Same with Rocky. Now Rocky II-IV? THOSE are cookie cutter sports movies. People tend to forget that Rocky won Best Picture because it was a tiny, intimate, engaging drama about a lifelong loser given one chance to prove his worth. Its also more of a love story than a sports film.
