Is this computer too crappy for work use/mild gaming?
« on: August 17, 2006, 03:44:39 PM »
I'm going to be moving out for college next month, and I'm in the process of looking for a computer. I went to a dispossesion place today; it sells lots of used stuff from college/business faculties. Anyway I found their computer section, and it had many computers with these specs:

GX240

2.0 GHz
40gig HD
512MD RAM
Pentium 4
$150

No info on the graphics/sound cards, but it's safe to assume they aren't great.

Is this computer a good buy?

not bad for $150

I'm using a 270 with a gig of memory and it runs fine.

For work use it's perfectly fine, but probably not for games.  Put in another 512 ram and a video card, and it should be passable.

Do you play any games on it?

I'm not looking for something that's going to run the Doom 3 engine like a pro or anything, just something good enough for some gaming and that can be upgrading. The main computer game I play (Wolfenstein ET) came out a long time ago, and doesn't require much to run.

Does it have an AGP or PCI-X slot, or is it integrated video with only PCI slots?

Played GTA Vice City on it. No problems. Video card on here is AGP. 256 nVidia GeForce 5200. I use DVI-D output for the monitor.

but you should get another 512MB of RAM and a bigger hard drive.

I have a GeForce 5200 on my computer at home, and it works good enough for the stuff I like to play. Even Half Life 2 (the demo) looked pretty good on it.

Hm. With the 512 RAM, I'm thinking this would do the job?

Ah, this is what it looks like:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1699303&Sku=M975-2026

According to those specs, the GX240 does have an AGP slot, as well as PCI slots. I'll still make sure I ask about this when I go back.

Thats not a bad PC, honestly when I worked at staples I had to undersell a lot of families just to get them to walk out with a PC because the honest truth, and what they are always relieved in hearing, is that they DONT need an uber muscle machine.

Amen

I don't need something that plays FEAR at its highest capibility. All I need is something that will allow me to get my work done in my room so I don't have to be at the library all day, surf the internet/download music, and play some games. Nothing fancy. And I can upgrade at a later time with scholarship money or whatever.

If it has an AGP slot, snatch a Radeon X850 for about $150 and you'll have a solid little gaming rig.

And I'd just put the card in the slot?

I'm assuming you're referring to the $130 one?

"No drive bays are open for expansion, so you'll have to make do with what's inside or swap out a drive to upgrade. The unit we tested carried a 20GB hard drive, but you can purchase the system with a 40GB drive instead for $59 more."

swapping in a new drive is easy enough that even a steppin-fetchit towelboy from Hicksburg, MI could do it. Buy it, then pick up a drive at Fry's when they're on sale later. Shit, just buy an external drive later and use THAT for storage.

Steppin-fetchit? Okay, you guys trash OA for being racist yet you have no problem spewing slurs out here? You're worthless.

Anyway, I'm pretty handy with computers. I just don't advise buying junk, especially when you can afford not to. Honestly, the Dell warranty program is good shit. I haven't bought a new computer in 3 years. If I feel my current one is getting old, I just tell them the shit is broken and they send me a newer, upgraded model. For my initial $1100 investment I've gotten 4 near top of the line PCs What's there not to love?

Given that "Steppin Fetchit" is a term that originated from within the black community, bruh, it ain't terribly racist. Ain't no white folks what came up with that. It's a term for fools with no game that work for The Man getting his towels and parking his Pontiacs, and then frontin' with honkies on the internet beggin' for their props.

You guys need to step your sonning game up, in a major way. Your doubleteaming is probably the lamest shit going on the internet right now. I'm reminded of the group of nerds that would sit in the corner of the lunch table and laugh at the rest of the student body for being "so stupid" while everyone with the least bit of social grace avoided them like the plague. You two have the cleverness of a murmering autistic.  I've never seen shit so nerdy and overtly homosexual at the same time. Pathedic. Commit dat shit.

I also remember the bitches that got their feelings so hurt by the "friendless nerd" that they banned said from their little circle jerk of a forum. You guys are softies. You guys wouldn't even think about talking this "tough" if we were face to face. I'd break your glases in half with a quick fist to your nose. Bitches like you would probably scream for your lawyers or something. Seriously, you guys are lame. If you feel that bad about it then just end your lives. Trying to cut on me for suggesting we get more attractive females to post here is not going to make you any funnier, cooler, or sexier. So stop trying.

Alright, now I'm looking at this computer.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4837463

Seems pretty snazzy to me. It's graphics card is better than the one I have at home, which is capible of running Half Life 2 (not great though, but good enough).

Seems fine for work use and gaming, as long as the games aren't don't pack too much "oomph". And really, the work part is what matters right now, so I'd be more conscerned about that. I'd say go for it.  ;)

Yeah, I don't think a X850 is gonna fit in that thing.... And it's also a total waste of GPU power on a 2GHz P4.  Even a non GT 6600 will be more than enough for that CPU.
