Kubrick is well becoming my favorite director ever
« on: February 12, 2007, 09:21:16 PM »
Kubrick is becoming one of my favorite directors. Depending on how Barry Lyndon and Dr. Strangelove are, he may very well be my favorite director ever. Hit after hit, and yet every one of his films are so drastically different that it's ridiculous. A true talent.

You guys weren't kidding when you suggested Kubrick and co. Kurosawa and Scoresese are next.

Dr. Strangelove WATCH IT NOW!

Have you seen Paths of Glory? Do NOT move on to a new director till you seen it.

I'd suggest starting Scorsese first, then moving into Kurosawa. Kurosawa has a MASSIVE backlog of classics which may very well take up a good few months, dude. BUT THOSE MONTHS WILL ROCK YOUR FACE OFF. :punch

Stop it! Don't distract him. He can't move on till he watches those 3. Paths of Glory becomes before Scorsese(and I  love him). Thats a fact!

I think I'm going to rent Taxi Driver just to see it unedited, as well as Goodfellas. Those seem to be his most accessible movies. Along with those two (which I've seen unedited as I said before) what else should I get?

He needs to finish Kubrick first. He has 3 left. He isn't allowed to move on to marty before then.

And he didn't ask for any as far as I can tell! This is a Kubrick thread silly.

As for marty, his best is far and away The Last Temptation of Christ

No I don't need to watch 3 more. I have plenty more. Eyes Wide Shut, The Shining, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, Paths of Glory. There's also the matter of his pre-Paths of Glory films.

In between Kubrick sessions I'll be watching stuff like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and stuff. I'm trying to find what directors suit me, and if I like what I see, I'm going to continue with the rest of their stuff. Right now it's Hitch and Kubrick.

???

PD asked for Scorcese suggestions, baby boo.  That's who I recommended Casino too.

Scorcese might not be a God.  But he's definitely very good.  He has talent and deserves to be appreciated.

Kubrick is the best ever. :heartbeat :heartbeat :heartbeat

Don't overlook The Killing, either. It may not have the intellectual edge that all of Kubrick's movies had since, but it's a damn fine and exciting crime pic that's at least as good as anything Tarrantino has done.

I still need to see Lolita and Barry Lyndon, myself.

Beware Eyes goes absolutely no were at a snails pace, and Lolita is also slow but ok (Don't leave these for last).  But the shinning and paths makes up for it.  Strange love is his second best movie ever, just after clock work.

I want an animated gif from a Kubrick film I've seen: 2001, Clockwork, or FMJ. I loved those Clockwork avatars at gaf where the people have avatars of Alex being reconditioned, but I would LOVE a 2001 avatar where the flight attendant walks up that wall upside down with the food trays.

Kurosawa is kinda lame, Himu.  Most of his movies are definitely worth watching, but they're all long and boring.  It takes me a month to motivate myself to watch one of them.

Kurosawa's autobiography is pretty good if you haven't read through it already.  Covers his childhood and film career up through Rashomon, where after covering the subject he decides that he should no longer be writing an autobiography as it is human nature to inadvertantly distort memories favorably, etc. as is the topic of the film and simply stops.  After Johnny Cash's autobiography, it's probably my favorite.

Here are what I'd recommend for Kurosawa.

Kurosawa's lighter samurai films, his more george lucasy work if you will(in a good way):
The Hidden Fortress (in tone and plot it feels like A New Hope)
Yojimbo (just pure fun action adventure samurai awesomness)
Sanjuro (sequel to Yojimbo)

His more drama/serious samurai work:
Rashomon (His first real great film back in 1950)
Seven Samurai
Throne of Blood (Shakespeare's Macbeth in ancient Japan)
Ran (Another Shakespeare, this time King Lear)

Non-samurai greats:
Ikiru
High and Low (Kurosawa does 60's film noir!)
Dersu Uzala (only film of his that won the oscar, also his only non-japanese film)
