The "What's coming soon?" movie thread
« on: February 13, 2007, 06:13:29 PM »
This thread is for discussing and bringing up recently announced or interesting movies. Either because they may be overlooked and they deserve to get enough hype as everything else or because whatever reason you want. This thread is for theatrical or dvd releases. It's your pick!

I found out about this movie at Something Awful.

It's called Fanboys.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0489049/

Trailer:

Four guys from the Midwest drive across the country to honor the wish of their dying friend: to watch "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace" at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch before the movie's worldwide release.

I was thinking that too. I bet he was like "Fuck that movie sucks, I should have wished to meet Cal Ripken junior"

I would've been much happier if Jim Carrey went for a better role than the one he has in 23.  I think he's pretty much proved he can be a great dramatic actor in Eternal Sunshine...but 23 looks like a poor Pi ripoff.  Close, anyway.

Stolen from Something Awful:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0451829/

Naisu No Mori aka Funky Forest: The First Contact

I really didn't know what the hell to think after seeing this movie. Leave it up to the Japanese to create one of the more bizarre yet hilarious movies I've seen. You'll probably never see anything like it ever again, and this is a guarantee.

The plot? There is none. Funky Forest is just a collection of related sketches. Some are recurring, most have characters from previous and future bits popping up, but the most common trend is that they have no point to them whatsoever. Here's some of the sketches presented over the 2.5 hour length.

-Guitar Brother: Three brothers (two Japanese and one a European or American fat kid) who are horrible at getting women. One tries to make guitar serenades, the other uses certain rituals and the fat kid just eats snickers a lot.
-The Hot Babbling Spring Vixens: Pretty much what the title says. Three girls who talk in the weirdest way possible about stories that go in circles.
-Home Room!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: A classroom with students ranging from police officers to old men, they always start the day off with a speaker for the class.
-Notti & Takefumi: Two friends who sit around doing nothing, although that changes with a 20+ minute dance sequence.

Those are the real recurring sketches, I don't want to explain much on them because it would ruin a lot of stuff in the movie (although you could argue that the movie doesn't even have anything considered spoil worthy). I think that the movie would get a cult following if it got released a bit wider globally. I'll shut up about it though and give a Trailer and Clip. Hopefully I'm not the only person here who has seen and enjoyed it.

I love me an epic. Lawrence of Arabia, Spartacus, Gladiator, &  Kingdom of Heaven are all favorites of mine, but I don't get the 300 hype. It looks like a corny overly cgi'ed film

I don't like the films that are pure green screen. Sky Captain & Sin City put me off. I don't like the "style"

this one seems really interesting to me:

son of rambow:  a home movie.

Quote
SON OF RAMBOW is the name of the home movie made by two little boys with a big video camera and even bigger ambitions. Set on a long English summer in the early 80's, SON OF RAMBOW is a comedy about friendship, faith and the tough business of growing up. We see the story through the eyes of Will, the eldest son of a fatherless Plymouth Brethren family. The Brethren regard themselves as God's 'chosen ones' and their strict moral code means that Will has never been allowed to mix with the other 'worldlies,' listen to music or watch TV, until he finds himself caught up in the extraordinary world of Lee Carter, the school terror and maker of bizarre home movies. Carter exposes Will to a pirate copy of Rambo: First Blood and from that moment Will's mind is blown wide open and he's easily convinced to be the stuntman in Lee Carters' diabolical home movie. Will's imaginative little brain is not only given chance to flourish in the world of film making, but is also very handy when it comes to dreaming up elaborate schemes to keep his partnership with Lee Carter a secret from the Brethren community. Will and Carter's complete disregard for consequences and innocent ambition means that the process of making their film is a glorious rollercoaster that eventually leads to true friendship. They start to make a name for themselves at school as movie makers but when popularity descends on them in the form of the Pied Piper-esque French exchange student, Didier Revol, their unique friendship and their precious film are pushed, quite literally, to breaking point.

I wont argue over anyone thinking that Halloween might be shit, but I dont know how you could say that about any of the other 3, especially when we havent even seen a thing from Stardust or Bourne, and only a teaser for Sunshine.

I really hope after Stardust that Vaughn does another crime flick, and gets Daniel Craig again. I loved Layer Cake, and felt like he out-Ritchied Guy.

I felt Layer Cake just tried too damn hard, so I'm kinda "iffy" on Vaughn. Bourne went kinda downhill with the last installment, so I'm skeptical on that as well. And Sunshine? Sorry, but the trailer did NOTHING for me.
