Official NBA Thread: All Star Week/State of the League

This weekend of course is the all star break/festivities. As of right now, what are your thoughts on the first part of the NBA season, and what do you expect for the next 30 or so games left in the season?

1. West Coast Dominance

In the last couple years Detroit and Miami have won championships for the east, but it looks like we're heading back to another period of west coast dominance. There simply aren't any teams in the east that could match up with the better west teams this year. Dallas, Phoenix, and San Antonio are the elite teams in the league, and everyone else is simply here for the party. This is going to set up some truly great playoff matches.

2. The Champs are Back?

Miami has won 7 or their last 10 games and they seem to be poised for a run. Currently they're the 8th seed in the east, but the three teams closest to them (Orlando, Chicago, and Indiana) are all slumping. If Shaq is able to stay healthy for the next 30 or so games I think the Heat could move past the hottest team in the east (Toronto lol) and possibly even take the third seed from Washington.

3. To MVP or Not to Be

Without Nash the Suns have lost their last 4 games and haven't looked like the same team at all. This brings me to my point that as it stands, outside of Kobe no player means more to their playoff caliber team than Nash. While Dirk is having a steller year, Dallas could still be a good team without him; Jason Terry runs the team very well, and Howard and the steller role players can more than hold their own. They can create their own offense, unlike Phoenix's players.

Meanwhile, Gilbert Arenas has come under fire from his own coach who doesn't think Arenas is a leader. No t surprisingly the team has struggled ever since the loss of Jamison. While I think Arenas is a great player, he's not an MVP, and he's a pretty selfish bastard. I don't know many MVPs who have the balls to say defense isn't as important as offense.

And then there's Kobe. The Lakers have lost 5 games in a row and are losing playoff position. Let's see what he can do in the last part of the season.

4. Trade Rumors

Gasol to Chicago? Kidd to LA? What the hell is the world coming to. I would hate to see Chicago trade away someone like Ben Gordon or Luol Deng for Gasol. Sadly, it looks like they'll have to part with one of them if they really want Gasol. While the Bulls definitely need a post player who can score, they shouldn't have to give up their young guards.

He should be. He's a great player who seemed like he was on the right road just last season. Now...he's the best thing on a shit team, and the owner doesn't even want him. Why not keep Gasol and hope you get either Oden or Durant in the draft?

The Suns have lost three games in a row, not four. Keep in mind they're also without Diaw and Kurt Thomas. Obviously those players are not as important as Nash, but the Suns are not a deep team and can not lose 3 of their top 7 players. If the Mavs were without Dirk, Harris and Stackhouse I don't think they'd be playing too well either.

The Suns offense is centered around a play making point guard. Barbosa is a two guard who is more likely to create his own offense than create for others. That's not to say Amare has suffered as he's been averaging 29 points on 52% shooting without Nash. So the Amare is nothing without Nash bullshit has got to stop! Anyway the point is Nash doesn't have a suitable back-up so the drop off looks more impressive. That's not to say Barbosa isn't a good player, it's just not what the suns need at the spot.

People always seem to minimize Dirk's impact on the Mavs. http://www.82games.com/0607/0607DAL.HTM People keep claiming the Mavs are so balanced and deep, yet without Dirk on the court they don't play too well.

The Pistons have to be the favorites to win the East, but they sure as hell wouldn't want to play the Heat in the first round. Hell I don't think any team really wants to face Shaq and Wade.

He should be. He's a great player who seemed like he was on the right road just last season. Now...he's the best thing on a shit team, and the owner doesn't even want him. Why not keep Gasol and hope you get either Oden or Durant in the draft?
Gasol makes a lot of money.

edit: Yeah and Arenas has played himself out of the MVP talk.

It also looks like Carter is going to be traded.

And Pippen thinks he's a better all around player than Jordan.

Quote
"Because I'm an all-around player," Pippen added. "Coaches would rather have a Scottie-type player than a Michael. I was an all-around player. I made people around me better."

More importantly Arenas talked himself out of the MVP discussion. Most recent case of Arenas saying something selfish/stupid:

Quote
"Everybody's talking about the nine, but I still actually have one more game against them. That's not out the window."

 :lol

The Suns are shit without Nash. While they don't have a good backup, their offense stalls with him no out there. Sure Amare and Marion are great players, but they can't win without Nash. They didn't do it the year before he came, and they aren't doing it now. On the other hand I'm convinced Howard/Terry/role players could hold their own with Dirk out for 4-5 games

The defense has been terrible of late for the Suns, they're giving up over 110 points per game without Nash. Surely you can't credit Nash with great defense?

Dirk misses 4 or 5 games over maybe three seasons, so we'll never know. But I guess that's anther knock against Dirk--actually playing!

The reason the Suns don't stand a chance against Dallas is the defense. While poor defense might not be a huge problem against San Antonio, against Dallas you might wind up giving up 120 points; they're definitely capible of more.

Drinky did you watch it?

You should at least watch the dunk contest, although no one in it stands out to me. I do want to see what Dwight Howard is so psyched to do though
