True enough, but is that shit mainstream rock? I don't know... When I compare mainstream rock and rap together, both are shit with  a few exceptions, but the thing that sticks out with mainstream rap is that the lyrics (the foundation behind rap) is often really really really bad. When you compare that to say, rock, usually you'll find a jam that's at least listenable, but when you hear bs like chicken noodle soup you want to kill yourself.

No, your original point is that even the worst rap lyrics best rock lyrics, which you claim are spared by the obvious racist media.  Everyone called you on your bullshit and now your point is that the best rap lyrics are superior to the best rock lyrics.

You were called on your ignorance - now man up, say you were wrong.

Called out on my hyperbole? Probably, (I admit I was pushing it with the best/worst comparison) but  called out on my ignorance? I think not. I don't have any in regard to this topic.

Rock songs require very little talent to write. I even wrote a few myself.

Let's face facts.  Mainstream hip hop is awful, not that rock is any better, but the reign of great rock 'n roll is far longer than the glory days of hip hop.  Furthermore, rock is not integrated into the culture of white suburban (or urban) youths.  White kids buy hip hop, not rock.  But hip hop is firmly integrated into black culture; it's often a reflection of the times.

The worst mainstream rock lyrics will tell you to fuck or to cry, because after you fucked, your woman left you.  Maybe both.  There's nothing wrong with music telling people to fuck, because music has been telling people to fuck for as long as it has existed.

Mainstream hip hop lyrics are most comprised of inspirational lines telling listeners to make money, get women and use violence to solve problems.  In hip hop, making money used to be a byproduct of making music, but now they're told that you should make music to make money.  It's garbage.  I've been told this firsthand by legitimate black artists who I've had the pleasure of speaking with candidly off stage, including Sage Francis and DJ Kool.  I don't speak from experience, but I will speak from their experience.

Was hip hop at its peak more creative than rock in its peak?  Who the fuck knows, as it's completely subjective.

But if you wonder why nobody respects hip hop, especially in terms of lyrics, over modern day rock, the answer is pretty simple - the message it sends out is complete garbage.

What's up with nostalgia for 80's lyricism?

Yeah, it's better/more sophisticated than snap-hop, but those were the "rock on/break of dawn" days where everyone was drawing on the same communal pool of about twelve rhymes.

On the original topic, who specifically is getting called out for hypocrisy?  Music snob outlets have tons of praise for rap, and the really mainstream critics (newspapers etc.) never come down really hard on anyone.

PS Where does DJ Kool get off lecturing people?  I like him, but his schtick is mostly call-and-response.

A lot of older rap artists are scornful because they never evolved their music to be appealing to todays consumers. Their old fans are still present and a lot of them still apreciate their music, but they've moved on. Add that to the fact that they were raped by their old record deals and you have yourselves some real oldschool haters. If you have a chance to make money with your music take it. And if you're making music to make money, go ahead and do that too. But there is artistic merit to a lot of mainstream rap out there that people ignore and it's kind of annoying. Also, underground acts these days make plenty of money to maintain a regular, middle class existence.

I'm going to say that there is definately a racial aspect to the lack of respect that rap gets. That's evident when you hear people (even black people as seen in this thread) write off rap producers as nothing more than monkeys pushing buttons on a computer. I'm convinced that rock lyrics are, in general, less clever, less creative and less engaging than rap lyics.

You still have yet to demonstrate that Rap doesn't get adequate respect (whatever that means), specifically lyrically--which appears to be the only real level at which you're making the critique in the first place (plenty of crossover production going on).  Not much modern rock is really interesting on a lyrical level IMO, so I'm not sure where you're coming from.  Folk can be more interesting lyrically than either genre and it hasn't gotten "respect" since the 60s.  Who the fuck cares about some arbitrary level of "respect" in the first place, and again respect from what quarters exactly?  Hip hop hasn't blown-up in terms of mainstream acceptance?  Bullshit.  Many would argue its ubiquity is 99.9% of why it's garbage.  As an aside every once in a while you hear a rapper trying to "do" rock and it's always complete trash.  Point me to anything that demonstrates otherwise.

Because rap overglorifies the worst aspects of man, and gives an awful sterotype to black people.  I hate rap videos, if only for the hot girls:drool but still it's just so fucking trash.

mainstream rap imo is so trashy and stupid no wonder it's getting the flack it does, I mean just compare rap/hip hop to ten years ago where it was fun, fresh, and didnt' make black people seem like gangsters who care about drugs and fucking bitches.

Sounds about right. I love rap music (all kinds, actually, minus perhaps country), but I really hate the thug shit that's associated with it.

Willco hit the nail on the head. Although there are many black youths in the cities who listen to rap and identify with parts of it, the vast majority of them have never been to jail, will never sell drugs (not that the rappers did either), don't get the women, and don't have much money. Much of rap is based entirely on a fantasty element. To a certain degree, this has always been a part of rap: the yearning for a better life, and a verbal detailing of what that life would/should be about. In the 80's the Sugarhill Gang merely wanted "a color TV so I can see the Knicks play bas-ket-ball."

Today that imagery is still being used with little to no sign of evolution. How long can one rap about the drugs they might or might not have sold, or all the women they might or might not have fucked? At some point it becomes so redundant and ridiculous that it's irrelevent. It's no surprise that most rap artists fade away after a certain age, whereas rock bands can stay around for much longer. The Rolling Stones will always have something relevent to say to their particular audience, because as Willco said they sing about issues we all understand. On the other hand, does Too Short appeal to his fellow 40+ year olds when he raps about pimping and driving a Benz?

It's disposable music, and this is most evident in the lyrics. Certainly not all rap music is disposable, but a great deal of it is.

Did I say anything racist?

Here I'll explain it a little better for you, RAP IS SHIT.

You ask how it gets shat on, well you know how when you take a dump, you dump some shit in the toilet?  Well obviously if you have more, you "shat" on top of that right?

Well there you go, same thing with rap.

It doesn't matter if you're white green blue black yellow or purple, rap lyrics are shit.

I see you windin n grindin up on that pole,
I know you see me lookin' at you and you already know
I wanna fuck you (fuck you), you already know
I wanna fuck you (fuck you), you already know

There's the reason nobody praises rap artists. Because there are very few actual rap "artists" that are popular.

Quote from: Nelly (feat. Paul Wall, Ali, Gipp)
Rob the jewelry store and tell 'em make me a grill.

Add da whole top diamond and the bottom Row's gold.

[J.D.]
Yo we bout to start a epidemic wit dis one
Ya'll know what dis is... So So Def

[Nelly]
Got 30 down at the bottom, 30 mo at the top
All invisible set in little ice cube blocks
If I could call it a drink, call it a smile on da rocks
If I could call out a price, let's say I call out a lot

I got like platinum and white gold, traditional gold
I'm changin grillz errday, like Jay change clothes,
I might be grilled out nicely (oh) In my white tee (oh),
On South beach (oh) in my wife beat.
V V and studded you can tell when they cut it
Ya see my granmama hate it, but my lil mama love it
Cuz when I...

[Woman]
Open up ya mouth, ya grill gleamin (say what)
Eyes stay low from da cheifin'

[Nelly]
I got a grill I call penny candy you know what that means,
It look like Now n Laters, gum drops, jelly beans

I wouldn't leave it for nothin only a crazy man would
So if you catch me in ya city, somewhere out in ya hood just say

[Chorus:]
Smile fo me daddy
(What you lookin at)
Let me see ya grill
(Let you see my what)
Ya, ya grill ya, ya, ya grill
(Rob da jewelry store and tell 'em make me a grill)
Smile fo me daddy
(What you lookin at)
I want to see your grill
(You wanna see my what)
Ya, ya grill ya, ya, ya grill
(Had a whole top diamonds and da bottom Row's gold)

[Paul Wall]
What it do baby
It's da ice man Paul Wall
I got my mouth lookin somethin like a disco ball
I got da diamonds and da ice all hand set
I might cause a cold front if I take a deep breath

My teeth gleaming like I'm chewin on aluminum foil
Smilein showin off my diamonds sippin on some Pinot Noir

I put my money where my mouth is and bought a grill
20 carrots 30 stacks let 'em know im so fo real
My motivation is them 30 pointers V VS the furniture my mouth
Piece simply symbolize success
I got da wrist wear and neck wear dats captivatin
But it's my smile dats got these on-lookers spectatin
My mouth piece simply certified a total package
Open up my mouth and you see mo carrots than a salad
My teeth are mind blowin givin everybody chillz
Call me George Foreman cuz I'm sellin everybody grillz

[Chorus]

[Gipp]
Gipp got dem yellows, got dem purples, got dem reds
Lights gon hit ya and make you woozie in ya head
You can catch me in my 2 short drop
Mouth got colors like a fruit loop box

[Ali]
Dis what it do when da lou
Ice grill Country Grammar
Where da hustlas move bricks
and da gangsta's bang hamma's
Where I got em you can spot them
On da top in da bottom
Gotta bill in my mouth like im Hillary Rodham

[Gipp]
I ain't dissin no body but lets bring it to da lite
Gipp was da first wit my mouth bright white
Yeah deez hos can't focus cuz they eyesight blurry
Tippin on some 4's you can see my mouth jewelry

I guess I'll add that every rap concert I've ever been to has been boring as fuck.  No band members playing music.  You'll be lucky if there's even a D.J. with turntables now.  Most just bring recordings and press play.  All you have to entertain you is some guy talking with a funny accent.  Do you want to know why Jay-Z has 50 people dancing around him when he's onstage?  It's because he doesn't want you to notice that all he's doing is walking around and talking.  He's quite the entertainer in mainstream rap.

I hate it when people say "They have no talent" That's just distinguished mentally-challenged.

You try rhyming and doing it well. I bet you couldn't come close to making shit sound good like Nas, or Pac, or JayZ.

Doubt you can do it. Even if you play guitar. :P

Lil Wayne? >:(

I can't believe so many people consider him to be omg amazing. I WILL ADMIT that he's impressed me recently with some stuff, but then there's the Fiya Man single ughh. Maybe I should download one of his so called classic albums...

I can't help but like this song

King of my city? I was never a big Jay-Z fan. I liked some of his songs, but I never understood why people always acted like he was the greatest ever/alive. That just made me hate him even more.

Nas>Jay-Z?

Jay wasn't considered an icon until he said he was one. Dude knows how to market himself. If you listen closely his whole blueprint is pretty obvious. Once Big died he was able to market himself as the new king, and no one challenged him. He attacked the only artist who could combat him (Nas) and "beat" him in the mainstream's eyes. Even before that he was constantly saying his first album was a classic, and soon everyone else was saying it. Then he started marketing himself as the greatest, and then everyone started saying that too.

Now he's saying "30 is the new 20" and I've heard older people say that shit. Too bad he can't market his Def Jam artists like he does himself

Always has been.

Btw, fuck his new songs. He really should have retired after the Black Album. Kingdom Come was nothing special.

Don't get me wrong, Jay-Z is a great rapper. But overall I don't think he touches Nas in terms of lyrics. Jay has a better catalog imo though. Nas has Illmatic, then a bunch of mediocre (to say the least) stuff although I haven't heard it all. HHID is good. Haven't heard the other stuff.

But THIS is fuckin amazing

"Illmatic" is a classic.

"And It was Written" Has some of the best rhyming I've ever heard.

Btw, Nas' albums rated by me:

Illmatic: 10/10
It Was Written 9/10
I Am... 6/10
Nastradamous: 4/10
Stillmatic: 9.5/10
Lost Tapes: 10/10
God's Son: 8.5/10
Street's Disciple: 8.5/10

Haven't heard hip Hop is Dead yet, but It Was Written is amazing. It's not as good as Illmatic, but aside from Lost Tapes, Nas will NEVER top Illmatic, so I don't see the point in wanting the impossible.
