So I'm getting my AA after this semester..
« on: February 22, 2007, 11:00:15 AM »
It's a Liberal Arts AA, and I'm not exactly throwing a party or anything about it. I'm still going to continue my schooling and get a real degree, but I wanted to ask you guys something? Does having an AA really benefit me much in the Real world? Especially one so vague. I feel like until I get a BA or more in something I'll be stuck in retail or something similar. I'm turning 26 this year and I feel like I'm getting too old for this. My roommates are the same age and they don't even go to school (well one is a massage therapist and the other is an assistant manager at a clothing store, and they seem happy with that). What about you coot? I know you have an AA, and you seem to be doing alright. Any suggestions? Also, I work with people in Retail who have Bachelors degrees, and are having hard times finding real jobs. It's really depressing.

Having a degree will be a benefit. But since youre going to keep going to school, having anothe degree is pretty awesome too ;-)

I have a Liberal Arts AA and a AS in digital design, while they werent instrumental in getting my current job, they were a big help. Degrees basically say hey look at me I can commit and have some certifications in something whoopie. Course getting a good job right out the gate doesnt really work unless you have a specific degree. Otherwise you depend on experience.

I did a fair bit of retail before finding my current job, but it was well worth the wait.

lol I have an AA in liberal arts/general studies; I got it last year actually when I graduated from high school/college

My thought process in getting it had nothing to do with future work though. I was advised that it was a good degree to get so that when I transfered I wouldn't have to take a bunch of standard, easy classes like English/philosophy/sociology/etc.

Is an AA really going to benefit you that much?  No, I wouldn't say so.  Associate degrees are most suited for use as a stepping stone for furthering your education.  Without some sort of supplement like certification or experience, they probably aren't going to take you much further along your career path than a high school diploma will.  How much you need to fall back on your education history varies from person to person though, so it's quite possible you could get along just fine without a BA.

Yup, that's my understanding. When I transferred I was able to come in as a junior because I had finished the majority of prerequisite classes thanks to the Associates.

Don't stop now IMO, just keep going with whatever you can.  Although a person can only take so much when working full time and going to school full time.  Just do whatever you can handle while you're young....

please stop acting like 26 is old.............

Basically if you have the time and money and the desire, there's no reason not to continue your education.

Ultimately if you dont WANT to continue your education thats a choice youre allowed to make, consequences n all. I went back for another degree a year after my first one because I realized one AA helps, but two, or a bachelors, is even better.

I accept my Lib Arts AA for what it is, the Degree in Dunno

Do not stop your education.  I thought I would be okay with AA after I finished High School (got it my senior year).  I found a better paying job in an unrelated field.  Guess what I was doing...

Get at least two AAs. A lot of large companies consider even that much a bachelors equivalent when the job isnt focused on a specific field. Everything else depends on your desire to work for said company and how you present yourself.
