Warner to make JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA Film?

Quote
Warner Bros. Pictures is looking to make a feature based on super team the Justice League of America, hiring writing duo Kiernan and Michele Mulroney to write the script, reports Variety. It's the first major action the studio has taken on the project.

The feature film is bound to include some combination of DC's most iconic superheroes, although the studio wouldn't confirm which ones they might be. It's unlikely that the studio and DC Comics, a division of Warner, would opt to feature second-tier characters.

Since its inception in 1960, JLA has featured almost every major hero in the DC Comics universe, although the core team has largely remained the same: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter.

The heroes typically band together to fight alien menaces or groups of supervillains.

"The Justice League of America has been a perennial favorite for generations of fans, and we believe their appeal to film audiences will be as strong and diverse as the characters themselves," Warner president of production Jeff Robinov said in announcing the hiring of the Mulroneys.

The trade says that in taking on the ambitious project, Warner faces several conundrums.

Now that the Batman and Superman film franchises have been revived, does the studio go after Christian Bale (Batman Begins) and Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) to star in a Justice League pic? The studio is also trying hard to bring Wonder Woman to the big screen.

To a large degree, casting will depend upon the story arc for the JLA feature and at what point in the superheroes' lives the plot takes place.

This could either be awesome or incredibly lame. However, I have hope in DC -- they've been taking better care of their film properties lately. :hyper

There is no way this would work, live-action, without being incredibly convoluted and lame.  It already takes a ridiculous amount of suspension of disbelief for Superman and Batman is into this whole realistic, gritty thing.  It'll be hilarious.

But Brandon Routh will be in it.  :-*

One man, portraying one particular character, could make this the greatest thing ever.

It would still be the most rediculous thing ever made, but I would pay to see that man kick all kinds of nerdy galactic ass.

This will be terrible if they can't get Routh and Bale to sign on, which would mean they'd either have to recast Superman and Batman just for this franchise, or do without those two characters who are basically the face of DC Comics and the most prominent league members.

I just don't see this working outside of animation...if it does happen, it'll have a bunch of second and third tier heroes, they'll go for an X-Men-esque 'realistic' approach and it'll end up sucking balls.

.

Sounds worse than the Spiderman/Superman crossover movie idea. There's no way they could balance such a large amount of characters - or make the generally sucky DC characters outside of Batman/Superman interesting.

Spider-Man/Superman crossover idea? There was never a movie idea for that. Batman/Superman, yes.

lolz, fanfics.

Going by comic book rules, Superman would shit all over Spider-Man before he could scream "Uncle Ben!"

Also, Superman is stupid.  Batman can easily defeat him without super powers and Spider-Man is smarter than Batman.

Spider-Man isn't a photographer anymore, but he was a photographer because he'd make a lot more money than being a teacher (which he is now).  He wasn't born with money, unlike Bruce Wayne.

Did Bruce Wayne invent web fluid or web shooters?  He'd probably pay someone to do it.  Spider-Man is a master in various sciences; it's how he's tackled some of his worst foes.

Batman is just a ninja with some detective skills.  Awesome superhero, but Spider-Man is easily smarter than he is.

Batman's a superhero; his abilities definitely fall into the category of superhuman.  Isn't he even listed as a "metahuman" nowadays in the D.C. universe?

Metahuman != superhero?

No. He's a human being who is trained in the art of combat, who has enough gadgets and abnormal problem solving abilities to successfully fight crime.

Dude, metahuman are superhuman abilities.  Batman is not a regular guy and this is the law passed down from D.C. Comics itself.  Batman has superhuman abilities, he is a superhero.  It's not all training, sorry.

Batman was bitten by a radioactive bat, which gave him the proportionate strength of a bat.  Thus, superhero.  End of story.

That's how it happened.  His parents were killed, and then one day he was walking along the grounds of his mansions, fell into a cave and the cave was filled with radioactive bats.  One of them bit him and he said "That's it! Criminals are a superstitious, cowardly lot!  My disguise must strike terror into their hearts!  With my new radioactive powers, I shall become... a bat!"

I was pretty disappointed they left that part out of Batman Begins for the sake of "realism."

It's even foreshadowed by the fact that during the night his parents are killed, they took him to see Mask of Zorro, which is about an old wild west superhero who was bitten by a radioactive fox!

Warner Bros. is making a direct-to-DVD animated movie of Darwyn Cooke's The New Frontier, a DC comics mini-series covering the Silver Age of DC, and including pretty much every DC character of that period.  The Hal Jordan Green Lantern is the protagonist, but Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Martian Manhunter, etc., all make appearances.

I'm looking forward to that movie immensely.  The live-action JLA?  Not so much.
