Damon said a few months ago he'd do it if he liked the script. IGN is reporting today the big roles are nearly cast

http://movies.ign.com/articles/767/767783p1.html

Kirk

Spock

McCoy

Quote
Those are the three actors that our studio insider advised us were the closest to being cast, with Damon's talks said to be further along than the rest.

Everything over the last 6 months implies Damon is indeed doing this which is still amazing if true, a ODD career move.

kids? The movie seems to obviously NOT be starfleet nonsense, seems to be set within the the original series time frame. A reboot on the shatner/nimoy stuff if you will.

Really? Hmmm. I guess I just automatically assume the worst/don't really know anything about what's happening with the franchise.

It sounds okay, then.

Agreed but they NEED Damon if they truly want to reboot this franchise and "erase" the for geeks only taste the franchise sunk to after the early shatner/nimoy films.

oh, Damon and Brody are good names and good actors. but you have the issue here of playing a role that Shatner and Nimoy have already defined...I can see Damon and Brody doing an excellent Kirk and Spock, but it would be their own take on the characters.

Sinise, on the other hand, I can see giving me DeKelley flashbacks.

The only thing I worry is the three not being able to play off each other well, that is central to this.

What?  First Contact was one of the most commercially successful Trek films, and it was well liked by both fans and critics.

I think this is a going to be a disaster, and I can't wait.

That made under 100 million, Paramount seems to be hoping for like over 150 million if not 200 million for this one. They have HIIIGH expectations and are letting Abrams spend a lot on this film.

First Contact did over $100 million worldwide, had a modest budget and was the second highest grossing Trek film ever.  Adjusting for inflation, as it came out over 10 years ago, it would've met Paramount's "new" expectations.  The proof is there - it's not that the series needs to shake off its geek stigma, it just needs to make good movies.

Also, this Kirk as Bond crap that's spewing out of J.J. Abrams mouth is distinguished mentally-challenged.  First off, the comparison isn't even relevant for a LOT of reasons, the most important of which is the source material.  Also, Star Trek is way more of an ensemble enterprise (hah!) than Bond films are.

Shatner is Kirk.  It's not a matter of someone embodying a character so well, as he was the character.  Same with Nimoy.  And those guys are still alive.  People who bought tickets to their films are still alive and kickin'.  Kids know Shatner is Kirk.  So now matter what, Damon and Brody will be living in Shatner and Nimoy's shadow and it's a large one.

I also don't trust J.J. Abrams as a filmmaker, because he has not proven himself.

I really think this is going to be a trainwreck and I'm boggled to why someone would anticipate something like this.  They should've gone a different direction.

I honestly think Trek needs a rest and then Paramount should resurrect it sometime next decade with a fresh cast and direction.  Maybe television, maybe film, but definitely a break is needed.  The universe is so big and as Next Generation proved, it doesn't need to rely on its Kirk era origins to survive.

If you're telling me that Abrams and the brass at Paramount are so creatively bankrupt, and stumped on how to expand the universe other than to simply retread with old characters - then that's sad.

It is not that Abrams is stumped its that Abrams doesn't LIKE the post-Kirk trek. He said he never watched anything other than the kirk era stuff and a little tng. He wants Trek to be the adventures of kirk and only the adventures of kirk. And if this movie by some miracle makes a lot of money expect Star Trek to be Kirk only for a long time.

Everything after Star Trek VI is "retconned" in Abrams mind. More proof of of that is when Abrams brought Nimoy and Shatner in and asked them to "bookend" the movie Shatner told him his character died in a TNG film and Abrams did not know that and Shatner seemed to imply Abrams was just going to ignore that.

Abrams agees luckily enough.

Well, I doubt Abrams has even SEEN it though since Shatner implied that Abrams never knew Kirk ever "died".  :lol

Honestly, I'm sort of looking forward to this film.

On the other hand, Willco's right. I would rather see them take the franchise in a different direction... such as post TNG/DS9.

But think about it from Paramount. What makes more sense for the box office? Matt Damon as Kirk. Or post-TNG new adventure? The general public only knows of Kirk & Spock, and Damon is a big name.

A post-TNG/DS9 film would BOMB and finally kill off the franchise, this has a chance at success due to the fact it isn't aimed at sci-fi fans nor fans of trek.

But but Abrams did that movie with Harrison Ford in the early 90's where he got shot in the head and lost his memory so he became a good daddy!

It's just Voyager was HORRIBLE, the worst piece of trek ever yet it was "somewhat" popular compared to DS9 and Enterprise(which got good its last two seasons after a terrible first two years)

DS9's fault was its crappy first season prevented it from getting the kind of fanbase that TNG or even Voyager got, plus the oversaturation of the brand.  Weren't all three on at one point or something ridiculous like that?  First, there shouldn't be more than one Trek show on at a time.  Second, television shows should always have a good FIRST impression.

TNG had a pretty piss poor first season.

In retrospect, its first season was its weakest, but that is almost the case for any television show.  But it was never bad.  Furthermore, it had the benefit of being a resurrection of a cherished franchise in a vacuum of sci-fi on television.  By the time DS9 and Voyager rolled around, we actually had a cable channel dedicated solely to the genre.

The Next Generation showed promise from the start, there was nothing like it on television and it didn't have to compete with any other Trek show.  If you can't recognize why it succeeded where the others did not, then enjoy your Abrams feature!

Paramount annouced the release date today. 12/25/2008.  Christmas day, kinda odd. Would seem better to be out during November. But Angels & Demons (prequel to Da Vinci Code), Harry Potter 6, and (likely) Spielberg's Lincoln epic so it is a bit crowded.
