Gundam Musou (PS3) This Week!
« on: February 27, 2007, 08:02:35 AM »
I have to admit that I didn't care much for this game before, but watching some videos on the official site got me pumped.

http://gundam-musou.jp/movie.html

Pics:

Basically this game is Dynasty Warriors with Gundam characters, although it will also have stages taking place in space.  Previews seem to indicate that fans of the Musou games and/or Gundam are going to love this.  The only negative seems to be that it MAY be lacking a co-op mode (versus, possibly online, is there), but I've seen a screen with the pilot select saying "2P press start," so I don't know.

What does have me wondering is if this game will be somewhat "incomplete" as the first entry in a new series, and that Orochi Musou, which is ANOTHER Musou game coming out at the end of March (it's Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors teaming up together) is going to kill it.  Musou Orochi has a HUGE amount of characters (everyone from both games), new moves, new stages, team play (you play in squads of three and switch characters on the fly), and new attributes.

Also Gundam Musou seems to be lacking detail in all the high res screenshots posted of it.  Look at this picture of the game being played on a Bravia...it looks better to me.

I'd be all over this if I owned a PS3, but having played Climax U.C., the mecha selection seems a bit limited, even if it DOES include the Turn A.

I never got the hype for this game. I never saw any interest in Gundam titles on gaf before, why is this one different?

The hype is there more because it's a Musou game than a Gundam game, I think.  At least on gaf.  Plus this should be one of the few actual GOOD games using that license.

I never got the hype for this game. I never saw any interest in Gundam titles on gaf before, why is this one different?

It's been hyped because it's the only thing PS3 has in the coming months. If this doesn't boost sales in Japan, and it won't, it's over for PS3.

LOL stop talking nonsense.  This month, PS3 got this game and Virtua Fighter 5.  It's got a better library now than the Xbox 360 had at this time last year.

Hahah, I think ill spend my money on Samurai Warrior Empires. Empire Games > All

I want that too, but Orochi Musou is going to fucking kill everything.  What I really need to get into more is Sengoku Basara 2.  It's so cool, yet I didn't play much of it.

Definitive rental as soon as it hits NA. Plz post impressions as soon as possible.

You bet!

I'd buy this if I liked either Musou or Gundam. As it is, it's a clusterfuck of my most hated anime series and my most hated game series. Winner! I can't wait for the inevitable Gundam Musou X with extra mobile suits they "forgot" to put in the first one.

With Gundam, just think of all the possibilites of more suits and pilots they can keep adding into "updates!"  Why, they can keep milking this Musou game for years!  But we know Koei wouldn't do that, right?   :lol

Is it exclusive to PS3 btw?
It would be funny as fuck if they announce it for 360 after seeing the PS3 sales figures.

I don't know, but you'd think so, since a Gundam Musou+60gb PS3 pack is also coming out tomorrow...

Seems like a few people on gaf are getting way too hyped up for this game though; I'm expecting something solid, but not spectacular.

Empire games have better mechanics than the traditional DW games. Let me know when there's a Gundam Musou Empires and ill think about it.

Haven't commented on this game since I played it...

I still haven't played too much of Gundam Musou (mainly due to Crackdown, which I finally got around to playing), but I have played a couple of levels on normal difficulty, and played some co-op with a friend over the weekend. I can definitely say that if you like Musou games, but don't care for Gundam, you'll likely still enjoy this game quite a bit. My friend generally hates anime and has zero interest in Gundam, yet loves the Musou games, and he was having fun with it. That said, he also told me he'd still rather play Sangoku/Sengoku Musou over Gundam Musou; he likes the variety of human character designs a lot more than the mechs, and so far at least, I have to agree with him. I love how the Z Gundam can transform into a jet when you jump and then dash, however...that's just awesome AND you can still shoot!

This game generally seems to feel like nothing particularly new; it reminds me of the PSP Musou games, since you move to different territories on the field and take them over, only everything is done in real-time, instead of moving to different squares on the map. The visuals are very nice, running at 60fps (I think) with no slowdown that I've seen and a very far draw distance. It's very, very smooth. The music is all ripped from Gundam...I guess it's better than the buttrock in other Musou games, but not by too much. :P The in-game cut scenes are pretty cool and FAR better than the cut scenes in all the other Musou titles...big points to Koei here.

Definitely going to try playing on hard next time I play, since the Zakus literally just stand there and let you kill them. I'd like some more challenge from the normal enemies; these guys are pathetic and it brought down my enjoyment a little bit, but I'll reserve judgement for after I've played a lot longer.

Right now, however, I'm looking a lot more forward to Orochi Musou at the end of this month, and while Gundam Musou is an enjoyable game, I prefer the likes of Samurai Warriors 2 and Sengoku Basara 2 (which I really need to get back to!) over it. This is a great first entry into the series, and I'd recommend a rental to anyone with a PS3 (and a purchase to Musou fans). All of this is based on very little playtime, however, so I might find myself loving Gundam Muosu once I've sunken more time into it.

Lastly, I wish Koei included an option for vertical split screen like in the other Muosu games. The horizontal split is okay (although I'd be afraid to see it on a 4:3 set), but felt crowded.
