The Beatles stopped touring in '66 and neither Lennon or Harrison wanted to do another concert ever again. Theonly way to get them to perform live, which McCartney wanted for the Let It Be documentary, was to perform on the roof of their studio.

The only one worried about Lennon's voice was Lennon. Both Martin and Emerick thought Lennon's voice was great and John was really the only one who wanted anything done to it.
