it's a little annoying that the halo 3 thread is getting called out.  ghaleon eb has resigned his mvp position b/c of the BS they require.  that's why he has his tag.  but none of those guys are MVPs.  they stay in their halo thread and talk about the game.  they are just fans of the game who have developed a little community.  they all had a meetup at pax.  that's not viral marketing.

I don't think that Ghaleon or whatever counted as a viral marketer. When you're in public giving free stuff away to people you're an outright marketer. There's nothing really viral about it.

For the record, I have nothing against Ghaleon at all-- he seems cool, I've played Halo with him. He's nice. I don't think he's a viral marketer.

That's not viral marketing either. And neither is Bruce making an official thread. Well, no more than it'd be viral marketing if I, a motion graphics designer, would put together a collage of game footage. If anything, it's good if competent people make threads, it typically makes them prettier. If you want to spot viral marketing, you shouldn't be looking at the blatant, over the top fanboys.

And hype threads aren't inherently bad. They tend to go overboard, and I have no doubt that there are real viral marketers active in most of the hype threads for high profile games, but being excited about a game and distributing information about it, those aren't bad things.

I guess if you consider GAFcred to be a currency, yes. The MGS4 thread was nothing more than that; the pinnacle of GAF-flavored fandom. I don't think Wollan is compensated, other than with access to betas. Which is a bit like being a real big fan of an up and coming band, and getting a limited edition promo cassette as a fan reward.

He's gotten wayyyy more defensive of GAF in the last few months, and his increasingly common method of defense is to attempt some kind of "smackdown" or "own" against the evil perpetrator. Like, I've been on #ga since I was banned, and he had no problem with me since I was just talking; but I made a joke yesterday about "lol can u activate my next alt plz evilore, i gotsa be postin" and like five minutes later while I was talking to someone else, he suddenly said "sure thing" and kickbanned my address. I mean, was he trying to get "tough guy" accolades from the handful of people on the channel at the time? Was he somehow offended by the joke, as if it was somehow going to spread sedition and rule-breaking among the users?

It's like if you say anything that can be perceived as a slight against "GAF" (like joining another message board, not worshiping the works of m0dus or BruceLeeRoy, or quoting a 1UP article where GAF is given some light ribbing) he mentally puts you on a List of Disruptive Elements that he treats with suspicion and with his "epic ownage" posts ready to dole out if need be. I don't really find them funny.  I never watched anything Star Trek related, and to me it is little more than a reconstituting what people have already said into a script and making a big ass gif.  They aren't offensively bad like Castle Vidcon, and they do get a bit annoying when 10 people quite it, but I don't really hate them or anything like that.  Somehow I think that if I was afraid to talk to a female, or had a habit of basting myself with pork fat, I would be a bit more understanding of the humor it tries to have.
