I do not believe rational thought inherently leaves a void inside.  It might show a bias in that direction, but it is not inevitable.  As Sartre indicated, existentialism can be a humanism.  There may be no pre-ordained reason for existence, but there are plenty of reasons that pop up in real life that are worthy of dedication.  Simple people just cheat out by going for religion rather than doing anything admirable.

I think Sartre is right, but to me it's hard to pick something that's actually worth the dedication on a larger scale.
That's why I would love to be religious, it has so many answers, you can stop asking yourself tons of question.

Well, how can you not "shit up" religious discussions? Is there even a discussion when one side simply rests on "to believe is to know," and little else? You can avoid it and even tolerate it, but considering the nature of message boards in general, it should come as no surprise that religion gets shat on. Of course, the only reason that religious people complain about being jumped on and generally mistreated is because their views don't translate well into debate hardpoints, resulting in them being the ones catching most of the eggs. It will eventually come down to "it's just too remarkable, someone must have designed it," a pure faith base to "challenge" research efforts.

And talking about proof, how much evidence do you think has been necessary to break boneheaded concepts in biology, geography, etc throughout history? To me as an atheist, religion in general is basically werewolf and witch hunting, comfortable explanations to complex or unpleasant events. Which is fine, but it can't be expected that it should stand unchallenged and respected (based on terms for respect and tolerance as set by the "targeted" religion)

It's a fair topic and fits into the discussion perfectly. But when people enter those threads with the sole priority to shit it up and totally change the dynamics of the discussion, there's a problem.

I have nothing but respect for the religion of Islam, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to learn about it from fervent Muslims of all nationalities. Today I'm not particularly religious anymore but I respect it as a personal belief; it's something that goes beyond simple understanding for some people. There are ways to question someone's beliefs without being disrespectful

Of course not. But with respect to religion my main goal when discussing another person's religion is "what do you believe." Religion is a personal belief, something many people struggle with. An honest, personal discussion with a religious person can tell you many things about their perspective/worldview. I may not agree with it, but I respect that. Now what I'm not going to do is listen to the opinions of those with an anti-religion agenda. I remember going to a christian conference a few years ago, and one of the pastor's was "introducing" Islam to us Christians. He even had a book concerning what Christians "should" know about Islam. I found it pretty fucking disgusting at the time, especially considering this was the type of denomination filled with people who believed they were reading the bible wrong for years before finding the (dispensational) truth. Yet here a pastor picked up the Koran, read it for a couple weeks, and proceeded to judge it in quite a hypocritical manner.

The God hypothesis ceased being intellectually respectable in the 19th century, and atheists are not going to pretend otherwise. This will make us sound like jerks, like the kids who told you Santa Clause didn't exist, and it was unreasonable to believe he ever did. But the bullying you see is simply a demand for consistency, coherence, and evidence. The outrageous statements you read are usually much milder statements which hyper-sensitive theists turn into strawmen.

I don't see it as pro-religious slant. I'd just rather listen to a passionate person of whatever religion explain their beliefs to me - I don't see that as bias. I get to listen to this person make their personal argument and go from there. I'm sorry but as someone who's sympathetic to religion I feel I can trust someone in that regard, and I don't feel the same way about the anti-religious crowd.

Anti-religion does not mean atheist, and as I said I have no problem listening to atheists talk about their beliefs, whether they're about religion or something else.
